Guest guest
Hi Ricky Joe, Hmm? I'd be interested, if for no other reason than information, to hear about smoothies. Watch those carb numbers. This is a very controversial topic. In my opinion, 60 grams of carbohydrate per meal is too high, especially for someone who wants to lose weight. Even if you knock that down to 30, and have 2 15 gram snacks (is that between meals?), that's still too high for someone to lose weight. Veggies and protein foods should enable anyone to lose weight, but it will take time, and it will require a shift in thinking/life style. Once the weight is off, you stay with the reduced carb meal plans. The South Beach diet has some good menus IMO. Their first phase pretty much eliminates carbs, and then the second phase puts some back in. But they have you eating lots of healthy meats and tons of veggies. Even the Mediterranean diet is good. The last I remember hearing, the ADA (the American Diabetes Association) still had diabetics eating too many carbs, and that's why many RD (registered dieticians) instruct their clients/patients to eat too many carbohydrates. The bottom line is, cut back and see what it takes to see the scale drop. Exercise will also help. Dave Visit: http://www.bardtalk.com and find answers to commonly asked questions concerning BARD. Smoothies Hello, I'm interested in making smoothies that are low carb to help drop my bg numbers. The thing is I don't care for soy milk. What could I use instead of soy milk that would taste good? I heard about a product at Trader Joe's called Aria that can be used to make the smoothies. I was wondering if any one is familiar with this product and have you used it? Another question is what fruits and berries are good to use and what are high in carbs. I'm trying to keep the smoothy in the range of 15 to 20 carbs. The endo and diabetic educator told me to have 60 carbs for breakfast and 60 for dinner or to have 30 at each meal with two snacks of 15 each. I'm trying to stay with in these limits. I've also heard conflicting info on bananas. Some said they can be eaten and others said no so am really confused. Love to hear your smoothy suggestions. Guest guest
Ricky JOE This is Terrie with Jade and Bunny. I have TO eat at least half a banana OR I find that my POTASSIUM will DROP withOUT even trying. I have been in the HOSPITAL FOR same I have LOST track OF HOW many times. And that started befORE I was DIAGNOSED as a diabetic. I can't have SOI either. IT Is ONE OF THOSE things that I just can't take. I have never TO my KNOWLEDGE had a SMOOTHY. I WOULD Like TO try ONE> I have had milkshakes I have made at HOME> and they were GOOD. I used blue berries and black berries as well as strawberries when inSEASON but if I were TO use FROZEN ONES I WOULD likely use blue berries as they are very GOOD FOR us. They have a LOT OF very GOOD things in them. Vitimine A is ONLY 1 OF the great things they have in them. I have FORGOTTEN the OTHER THINGS they have in them. YOU can get dried berries in bulk areas in SOME STORES TOO. OTHER than that, I DON't KNOW much ABOUT HOW TO help YOU. Terrie with a black cat named Jade and a red-GOLDEN retriever named Bunny email FOR THOSE WHO want TO write OFF list: shineyDOG@... Smoothies Hi Dave, The smoothies are supposed to be between 10 and 15 carbs. So if I have one for breakfast and another for lunch I should be significantly lower than the 60 carbs they are saying I should eat. I'm not doing it to loose weight but hope that I will. The Byetta I'm taking is making me loose weight pretty fast. Right now I'm loosing about 15 pounds per month. I think that is pretty good? Ricky Joe . Guest guest
Hi Ricky Joe, It sounds like you've got a good plan going! Keep up the good work! I've heard some good things about byetta (not sure of spelling, did you spell it right?), so keep us informed. I know others will appreciate how you make out. Terry makes a good point. Don't forget about the nutrition content in foods. What are some sample smoothie recipes? Thanks. Dave Visit: http://www.bardtalk.com and find answers to commonly asked questions concerning BARD. Guest guest
Is milk the liquid? I kind of think it is. That would be problematic for me. but perhaps smoothies can be made using water. Guest guest
You can use milk and other ingredients to make low-carb smoothies. In fact, get fruit flavored oatmeal and use one pout along with ice and milk. Makes a perfect smoothy. You can use other fruit such as banana, strawberies, cranberies and probably others. Guest guest
Ricky Joe, Glad to hear you are doing losing weight. Have your A1C's also dropped? A agood smoothy my husband made up on his own is use a can of sugar free 7Up in the smoothy machine add some blue berries and any other berry and perhaps half a baana and a bunch of ice cubes. In about a minute you have an icy-not as somooth as a smoothie, but a lot less calories. Smoothies Hi Dave, The smoothies are supposed to be between 10 and 15 carbs. Guest guest
Ricky Joe, I forgot in mention in my previous Email that you can, of course, leave the banana out. Also, you do not need to be wary of bananas unless you are having kidney problems People who have some kidney damage such as me, need to monitor how high the potassium level.
