Guest guest
Oh good, I'm glad to see that you asked this question. I would love to find out about this also. I have been on the diet for 2 1/2 weeks and on Tuesday I went and had a structual integration session (also known as Rolfing). It's like 1 1/2 hours of deep tissue massage and works on the outside membranes of the muscles. I know that detox reactions can result from that also, but just yesterday (the day after the treatment) I started have the very dark, almost black but still formed stools (never had a diarrhea problem) yesterday and still did again this morning. What does the black stool mean? Thanks, Liberty 2.5 weeks on SCD (for me) > Folks, > What's with the dark stool, almost black at the beginning?. > It has been a month and now it is getting a bit better, but is it a > good/bad sign? Guest guest
I also wish there was some guide to say what is normal and what is not. My son periodically has what looks like a bunch of marbles. I have no idea if this is a good sign or a bad sign. If it is a bad sign, why would it happen? He has been SCD for 6 months and is diagnosed with celiac disease. Guest guest
, I believe that is considered a form of constipation, from what I recall reading some months ago on this list. Do you keep a food journal? Maybe you could tie it to something in particular that he ate the day before? Guest guest
Well, to answer Liberty's question... Dark stool could be due to blood (hope not!!!!) or could be something you ate. If you keep up a food diary, go back and check what you ate the day before or two days before... As for the marbles, I have no idea, other than constipation? Guest guest
OK, now you are scaring me. I also started the homemade yogurt on Sunday but haven't noticed any symptoms from it. Why now, 2 1/2 weeks into the diet would I suddenly have blood in my stool! Can anyone tell me if dark stools could be die off or should I go to the doctor? I have no other symptoms, just a bit fatigued, but from what I've read on the detox reaction following massages, that could be expected since I had the deep tissue massage stuff on Tuesday. Please let me know if anyone else has had dark stools that were just die off? Thanks, Liberty > Well, to answer Liberty's question... I recently saw a documentary about animal food. You ab-so-lutely do NOT want to know what goes into regular animal food. It is total junk (filled with soy and then that's the best ingredient). With that kind of food, your animal produces mushy, light coloured poop in HUGE quantities. When you give your animal food of the better qualities, poop will be almost black and the quantity substantially less and much more formed. I was so amazed at the comparisons I could make. It sounded so familiar. Guest guest
Thanks Marjan, I feel a little better since I hadn't connected it with the yogurt until I wrote the last post. I ran out of the yogurt last night and my new batch won't be ready until tonight. Also I just realized that when I started eating the yogurt on Sunday, I put strawberries in it (which I have been eating fine thus far) but starting on Monday and yesterday, I ate about 1/2 cup of the yogurt twice a day with a big handful of frozen blueberries. I bet the blueberries are the culprit in making the stools so dark the last two days, don't you think? Well, I will refrain from the blueberries for a couple of days and see if that's it or not. I just was kind of hopeful at first that it was some kind of great die-off sign, but then I got scared when I was told it might be blood. My whole reason for going on this diet had nothing to do with stool problems, rather I am just burping all the time and have a feeling of pressure on my stomach and sometimes a lump in my throat. My lab tests said I had too much of a bad bacteria in my digestive tract, Citrobacter freundii, so I figured that this diet would help to reduce it to more normal levels and hopefully get rid of the burping and stomach pressure. Well, enough of my saga for now. I think I'll live. Thanks again, Liberty > > I remember that straight after my son started eating nut yoghurt (= > in fact heaps of beneficial bacteria), his poop got darker than ever. > > Just want to draw a slightly exotic parallel here. Guest guest
Both of my celiac sons had dark stools at the beginning of the diet which followed with their first solid stools of their lives. It was so strange to see both of them following the same patterns stoolwise. They have not had dark stools since the first month of SCD. I believe Elaine told me at the time it was a sign of die-off. > > Well, to answer Liberty's question... Dark stool could be due to > > blood (hope not!!!!) or could be something you ate. Guest guest
That could be. This particular child has had diarrhea most of his life but pretty good stools since SCD. He has only a few times had marble poop. This last time was after a night of vomiting. I think he had the flu as opposed to food because the next day I was horribly sick. I could not even lift my head off the pillow. It was surprising to see though because I was expecting diarrhea. > > I also wish there was some guide to say what is normal and what is > > not. Guest guest
We are pre diet here.. my son has those types of stools in between bouts of loose stools.. we are scheduled for a colonoscopy with him (he's 2) on Wednesday. After that I have about two weeks and then we will start SCD. No matter what the scope says. The poor kid isn't eating either.. not much anyway, and his weight is down again.. knows the troubles I have been having with the doctor.. So wish me luck! > > > > > I also wish there was some guide to say what is normal and > what > > > is > > > > > not. My son also had very dark stools the first few weeks on SCD. I think it was possibly due to die off or just his system getting used to more red meat, etc. His stools are still a little darker than they used to be but not black. Just give it a little time. Guest guest
Hi , Colour changes in stool can mean a couple of things. It can mean changes in bile salts, change of body microflora or be blood. Are you peeling and cooking the zucchini? The skins can be pretty tough if he isn't ready for them. A lot of people have reported trouble with celery even cooked. You can either take it out of his diet temporarily; leave it whole in the soup for flavour but take it out so he doesn't eat it or remove the " fibrous strings " on the back of the celery. There are not set weeks before seeing trophies. Usually it is a gradual improvement. He may swing back and forth between constipation (pebbly stools) and mushy stools as he gets closer to having trophies. Once he starts having trophies he may a period of time before he gets them consistently. Patience is a big part of this. Sheila UC, 20 years -- in remission after 39 mos SCD mom of SCD 24 mos Folks, What's with the dark stool, almost black at the beginning?. It has been a month and now it is getting a bit better, but is it a good/bad sign? Also, his stools have varied between mashed potato, pebbles and very very soft playdough. We are keeping a journal but we still cannot figure out what causes what. He also has what I call Sunday poop (sorry about that), formed center surrounded by D. His diet consists of mostly chicken, beef, acorn, some zuchinni, cooked pear, and acorn fries, and some carrots and celery in the soup. We are introducing butter nut squash today, wish us luck! Also, what are the typical number of weeks before we can expect trophies?
