Guest guest
That's not the real issue, as it's easy to keep the temp. controlled in the ambulance provided you have system to keep the A/C in the pt. compartment on while parked, either by keeping the ambulance running, or plugging it in. What you cannot control is the temp. that the drugs are exposed to during shipping and storage prior to when you got them. The manufacturing label doesn't say for how long the exposure can be, it just says " store between X and X " . When I called one of our drug companies to inquire once, I got at least 4 different stories. As it stands, most services I am aware of keep the units rear A/C on during the summer. We have portable igloo coolers that plug into the rear electrical outlets for things that need to be refrigerated. magnetass sends Question for the Group > What actions, if any, have your agencies taken to prevent the exposure of your medications to temperatures outside of ther manufacturers reccomendations? Guest guest
Ditto. We have shoreline power that runs our A/C when parked, and our generator runs it when in service. We installed small refrigerators to handle medications requiring temps below the normal room temps. Guest guest
Steve, We retrofitted all of the existing trucks with a seperate AC unit that runs off the shoreline. New units are designed to run both off the engine and off the shoreline. When trucks are in station, they plug it in. When out we keep them running. Guest guest
We have refrigerators on each unit and keep the unit on A\C power when not on a call. A\C powers the Air and heating unit. When on a call the generator powers the Air and heating. We keep a small computer temperature logging unit in the refrigerator and the drug box. We also keep one in the supply room in the station where the meds are stored. Once a month we down load the information from the temperature logging unit on each truck and supply room in to the computer and print out in the form of a graph that shows temperatures over a month period. We address any problems we find and then place in file for TDH if they want to take a look at it. Generally the only issues we have found is when a unit was not plugged in upon returning to the station. This does not occur to frequently. We utilize Frazer trucks so the need for AC power is not a problem. There may be other ways to handle it. The temp can be purchased from United Refrigeration . When we purchased them they ran about $60.00. They came with the computer program. I was thinking about taking part in a walk sponsored by the ADA The Red Strider walk in September. Anyway, I didn't realize the hostility that a lot of diabetics have towards the ADA and when a few new diabetic friends I had made found out I was participating in the walk they got down right hostile towards me. I was and am hurt because I thought I'm doing something important in raising funds so the ADA can lobby congress and sponsor new ideas for treatment. So am I wrong for participating in the walk and should I pull out of the walk? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Guest guest
The walk will be good for you! As far as supporting the ADA, I'm not able to offer an informed argument as to why or why not, but my impression is that they have probably out-lived their usefulness. They've probably got lots of people that aren't too interested in losing their jobs. Over the years, some of us on the list have criticized the ADA's apparent out dated recommendations, and if nothing else, supporting them is only helping to promote a model of diabetes care that has come under increased scrutiny as of late. If I'm not mistaken, most notably, their continued promotion of what many of us believe is a diet too high in carbohydrates. I'm looking forward to the opinions and thoughts from some others who might be more informed than yours truly. Dave did you receive your NLS player yet? Expecting one soon? Guest guest
Ricky, The ADA is mostly a polical group, which has done a lot to promote funding for diabetes research. There is nothing wrong in your walking for that. I don't believe all they promote -usch as too high carbs for most diabetics, but they do help make more government money available to research.
