Hello Everyone!

I recently joined this group and after reading all your stories

had a few questions. About a year ago I found out I was urinating a

protein count of 200 and the doctor diagnosed me with IGA, however

it was not confirmed with a biopsy. After taking the medication

Zestril for 6 months I went back and did a 24 urine-analysis only to

find that my count had jumped to 405. I am going to my neph doctor

on thurs but my question is, is this a really bad sign? Is it

normal? I was reading some of your stories and the protein counts

were not included. I do not have any other symptoms as I play

basketball for my college team, but was wondering what your counts

were when the symptoms occured? Sorry basically I just was

wondering what all this means for me? I am not sure if 405 is in the

serious realm or just the beginners?? Thank you so much and thank

you for all your stories. I really appreciated reading them!

Sincerely,

Anne

Hi Anne. A proteinuria of 405 mg/day is sort of on the mild side. Is it

meaningful? Well, it depends. Most people with IgAN will have at least

somewhere around that amount, if not more. I had about that much for years

and years. It's not high enough to cause symptoms of heavy proteinuria - for

that, it would have to be more like 3500mg/day or more. It's really just a

" normal " symptom of IgAN, and it's nothing too dramatic - usually not enough

to bother treating with steroids, for example. Good luck with your

appointment.

Hi Anne,

Welcome to the group! I think Pierre already answered your question, and I

can chime in and say that my Neph doesn't start to really worry until I get

over 5,000, and he would probably jump up and down for joy if I could get down

to

the 400s. Spilling some protein is pretty common in IgAN, and in fact is

often the first symptom recognized. That is true in my case.

I did want to officially welcome you to our group though!
