Guest guest
Ron, Suggest you contact the manufacturer. Somewhere in the ancient cobwebs of my mind is the notion that Wheeled Coach and other manufacturers send ambulances taken in on trade to Mexico and other second and a half or 3rd world countries. Maybe Ronnie Goode could help. Gene

Guest guest
Probably Homeland Security issues... I've read a few things about... somewhere... somehow... intersted in Ambulances, and other emergency vehicles. Can't remember when, who, or where though. Best for someone trustworthy to get it.. rather than Joe Schmo who's gonna use it wrong. -Matt Kuhl --- Red's Firefighting Site wrote: > why dont you want them auctioned to the public? i > know a couple of people > who use old ambulances for towing trailors....dirt > cheap diesel chasis, cant > beat that. > > > Road to Mexico > > > > I've often heard that tired, old ambulances end up > in Mexico. > > > > Our ESD has a couple of junker type III's taking > up space in a barn, > > and I told them I'd put this to the list: > > > > There was mention of sending them to Houston for > auction, but it > > would cost more to have them towed than they're > worth. Guest guest
even if they are stripped bare of all the " ambulance " parts? Guest guest
Yeah- not only for Joe Terrorist or Mr. Schmoe...even if stripped of lights, those holes in the box could be filled easily by anyone with internet or Gall's magazine; display just 2 reds on front and it's an emergency vehicle. Green, clear, and amber are available, but still- nothing else looks like it- it's an ambulance. Our unit doesn't even have have " ambulance " or a star of life on it. I don't think that's the reason certain folks fail to yield to a dozen lights and 200W siren. I think it was in Jems I saw the article about the " use " of old ambulances...or maybe it was on this list, showed " Dr Love's " mobile sex toy/home party shop or something. The point was also made about the disctinctive UPS trucks getting respectful burials or recycling or whatever at the end of their 'life'. Yeah- that, and a terrorist could easily take out Medical City with one....but enough about why the public shouldn't have 'em- Where does an old ambulance go to die- do the real junkers really go to Mexico? If so- who gets 'em there? Guest guest
what about giving the old rigs to colleges that have a ems program seprate the box so they can install them in the class room to make the training more realistic and the motors to the vo tech programs

Guest guest
How about donating them to the Red Cross? They can referbish an ambulance for use in disaster relief. Or, ow about a VFD? One of the VFD's out here re-furbished one into a transport for all their rescue equipment (vehicle extrication, swift water, high angle, etc) and as a CP for use during searches and such. Guest guest
Ron, Many college based EMS programs are begging for old ambulances and most of them have a diesel mechanics program to do the work on them. If you are just trying to get rid of them without making any money this would be a good way to do it. As far as Mexico, that used to be the best way for the manufacturers to unload the trade-ins for a profit but that has dried up for the most part as you can see by how much the trade-in allowance has dropped in the past 5-10 years. Guest guest
Even if they are stripped bare of all " ambulance " parts, anyone can order lights through the internet.. and bam. you got yourself an ambulance. Maybe if the box was taken off, and just a chassis, but... from what I understand, that costs more money than it's worth.. -Matt Kuhl --- Red's Firefighting Site wrote: > even if they are stripped bare of all the > " ambulance " parts? > > > Road to Mexico > > > > > > > > > > I've often heard that tired, old ambulances > end up > > > in Mexico. > > > > > > > > Our ESD has a couple of junker type III's > taking > > > up space in a barn, > > > > and I told them I'd put this to the list: > > > > > > > > There was mention of sending them to Houston > for > > > auction, but it > > > > would cost more to have them towed than > they're > > > worth.
