Does anyone have a reference from CMS that states that electronic

signatures are acceptable in therapy documentation/plan of care

documentation as a physician authorization for continuation of therapy?

We are starting to get some holds on authorization from commercial

Medicaid policies; they are not accepting electronic signatures and are

telling us that this is a CMS requirement.

Thanks,

Amit

Here is the definition of signature from CMS Pub 100-02, Chapter 15 on page 150.

SIGNATURE means a legible identifier of any type acceptable according to

policies in Pub. 100-08, Medicare Program Integrity Manual, chapter 3, §3.4.1.1

(B) concerning signatures.

Here is the definition of signature from the manual cited above.

B. Signature Requirements

Medicare requires a legible identifier for services provided/ordered. The method

used shall be hand written or an electronic signature (stamp signatures are not

acceptable) to sign an order or other medical record documentation for medical

review purposes.

So the answer to your question is yes, electronic signatures are acceptable.
