Hi, gang ...

Is an EMG the test where the doctor traces the speed of nerve impulses by

using needles connected to wires? If that is an EMG, I have had two, one in

1983 to test for the extent of my neck injury, and one about four months ago

to test for CMT ... and I didn't find them to be very painful ... Could it be

that some doctors are just bigger Klutzes than others?

Lamar here,

That's the EMG. I had it and the Nerve conduction velocity tests and neither

were painful. A slight shock and twitching of the muscles. Only very slight

discomfort. many with CMT complain with severe pain from them. I do not know

if the doctors used less current, a different technique, or what. When I had my

first one, I had very little loss of feeling so it was not that I was " numb " and

did not feel it. I will say I have a high pain tolerance, for example I have

had sutures several times with no locals, but I did feel some pain from that.

As I said only a very minimal discomfort from them..

I've had two and they hurt me. I think, and this is just my opinion,

nothing to back it up as yet. The more the nerves are damaged the more it

hurts! If the electricity travels along the nerves, which it does, and

those nerves are ok, its smooth sailing. If they have weak posts, breaks in

them, the elecrticity has to " jump " or push through those spots and that

hurts???? Make sense? ~Becky M.

They also have to turn the machine up higher to get a reading from damaged

nerves.

I have one EMG and don't care to have another one!! Your comment on the weak

spots is very interesting. When I had my EMG it hurt!!! They also did

spinal tap the same day, and I was still having spasms in my spine when they

tried to get the spinal tap done. Needless to say it wasn't a very fun day!
