Guest guest
Milena Its been a big 6 months for me. I was on 150mcg of synthetic T4 for 13 years (thyroidless) and doc put me on T3. I have gone through a lot of ups and downs. First few days on T3 were great but I was taking too much at once. I was completely uneducated. Ive tried putting T4 back in because I felt aweful. I did this twice and just made things even worse. Then tried putting NT into the picture. Worse again. For me its ferritin and fluctuations between high and low cortisol. Its taken 6 months of experimenting, having really bad anxiety and heart palps and other nasties. A lot of pressure on my body and my family. But hang in there. You have to find what works for you. Educate yourself of how others dose, keep an eye on your ferritin and your cortisol. Read all the posts on here. Get STTM book. Research as much as possible. Sometimes its the things you would never think are the problem that are. Im back on T3 only (40mcg a day without a thyroid and its better than the 150mcg of thyroxine in terms of hypo symptom elimination). Im supporting my adrenals with about 15mg of HC and uping my ferritin. This week has been the best week I have had for a very long time. My husband even brought me flowers and I am falling in love with my two year old (who I have seen as my big stressor). I have coped so well and yesterday was a really happy day for me. Worth all the crappy ones. Good luck. Guest guest
Louise, It's great to hear you are having such a good results after a lot of struggle.I wish you from now on to be just better and better. Thank you for your support and sharing your good story,it makes a big difference in our situation. I do know we have to hang and fight I just want to know I'm doing the right thing for my improvement.Since every day things are changing and the symptoms with that,I'm trying to analyze and keep eye on what and when happens. It's very confusing and I get lost in all of that. If I'm not deeply convinced that what I'm doing is the right thing, it makes me very nerves and uncomfortable.I can stick with a treatment besides running into a lot of obstacles, just to know is the right one. That is my problem and I'm trying to get as much info as I can, and read a lot, as you suggested.I appreciate a lot your help. I hope you and your baby will have many more great days ahead. Guest guest
Val and Nick- Nick said in regard to Cytomel that >If you are on enough of it then you should feel good. When I was on 25mcgs someone here said people don't feel good until you get at least 50mcgs. I got to 50mcgs, and then i was told you need at least 75mcgs. So now I'm at 75mcgs and my problem seems like I have regressed to more hypo symtpoms - at least at is what it seems like. my hair is dry as anything again, I'm getting this itchy scalp thing again, my mood is a bit worse, I'm feeling more cold. Now maybe I'm still not taking enough Cytomel to compensate for the 60mgs of Armour that I stopped before I started Cytomel. I've read a lot of people having ups and downs - but I haven't heard anyone on here say they felt worse on Cytomel- that's what I feel. So could someone give me some clarity 1. Do you think it's about not taking enough Cytomel? 2. Can these symptoms - that seem hypo- be the result of not enough cortisol? I'm taking 25mgs HC > > > > > > >But I thought we were supposed to feel better on T3 only vs Armour, not worse. > > > > > > If you are on enough of it then you should feel good. > > > > > > There are various things that stop you being able to take enough to > > > feel well, low ferritin and low or high cortisol being 2 of them > > > > > > > > > > >If anyone on here can say this is what they experienced with T3 only, but eventually they felt better, it would be great to know???? > > > > > > I had pretty sever resistance, I had needed 12 grains of Armour to > > > feel well. Can these symptoms - that seem hypo- be the result of not enough cortisol? I'm taking 25mgs HC Without knowing some basic facts I can't say what you need to do, I've been out of the group for a couple of weeks with a very busy time at work. The first thing is what is your temperature doing on a day to day basis and within the day, if it is bouncing then you need more HC, or the timing of the HC changing. If your temperature is stable or fluctuating slowly through the day with a peak at 3pm then you have enough HC for your current T3 dose (though you may need more if you increase it). Given that temperature is stable what is your pulse rate, most people need to be somewhere between 75 and 90 (after resting for at least 15 mins) to feel well. If it is much below this then you probably need more T3. Are you spreading your T3 through the day?? Nick
Guest guest
>-What does it mean when you say " had to drop to 40 when the T4 started converting " ? Is that because the T4 remaining in your system starts converting to T3 and, with the T3 you are taking, you could get overloaded and go hyper? I ask because I am wondering if that is what is happening to me- and it's making me feel worse? yes, I went hyper a week or two into the T3 only, backed off, waited, and ramped up again. It wasn't too much T3 taken, it was my body producing some from somewhere from the amount of time it lasted which was a few days before I had to increase much. If it had been simply taking too much it would have cleared inside a day. > >So I see a lot of people say they had ups and downs, but few who say they were worse on T3. And I don't understand the hair and mood thing- they just seem like markers to me of where your thyroid is. As I said in another post temperature and pulse will give us a clue what's going on Nick
Guest guest
> >Can you explain " T4 converting " ? My perception of why after a week or two I suddenly needed a lot less T3 than I had been taking. I think the circulating T4 in my body which hadn't been converting to T3 suddenly started doing so as it decayed through a certain level. My guess, I don't have labs to prove it. >And can you also explain " Swap over " ? Guest guest
1. Does " been through worse " mean they felt worse taking Cytomel than when they took Armour? I feel worse. i am talking about objective markers of hypo that have returned from when I took Armour. It was suggested that if I am on enough Cytomel I should feel better. 2. My avg temps have been around 97.2 to 97.0 each day-- the 3 temps themselves each day fluctuate- One morning it could 96.5 the next it could be 96.9, for example. The last one at 3 is usually the highest. 3. I will check my pulse and I am spreading it out three times per day. I notice a funny taste in my mouth, btw, since starting cytomel. > > >I've read a lot of people having ups and downs - but I haven't heard anyone on here say they felt worse on Cytomel- that's what I feel. Guest guest
>1. Does " been through worse " mean they felt worse taking Cytomel than when they took Armour? I feel worse. i am talking about objective markers of hypo that have returned from when I took Armour. It was suggested that if I am on enough Cytomel I should feel better. In the " transition phase " from Armour to T3 it is likely that you will go hypo or hyper for a while, you are trying to set the dose against a moving target as the amount of T4 in your system (from your own thyroid and the Armour) decays and you match the decay by adding T3. This process can take 8 weeks before you end up with only T3 in your system and hence require a constant amount of it. For me I needed weekly increased in order to stay " not hypo " in this phase. Once you are at that stage you can then try and find your stable dose to be " non-hypo " while there is resistance in your body, this can take a while but you can increase a little every 3 to 5 days to try and find it. If you had a significant amount of resistance then around the 12 week mark you may suddenly find you are taking too much, this is when the RT3 leaves the receptors. If you have had long standing heavy resistance this can be sudden and dramatic, My requirements dropped by half overnight, most people won't have it that dramatic, a 10 or 20% shift is more typical. After that " clearance " you will find that your requirements have stabilised, I made one attempt to go back onto natural and it didn't work for me so have decided to stay on T3 only permanently. I might even tell my Dr one day! Nick

A waking pulse and a resting pulse during the day would be helpful. No idea of the taste, have you had any Candida issues?? For me 5 times a day works better than 3, if I take too much T3 at once my cortisol levels can't cope and dip causing a temperature dip. I take equal doses at 7am, 10am, 12, 4pm, and as I turn the light out at night. This works for me Nick
Guest guest
Hey, Nick- Now this makes sense- I really appreciate that explanation. I think this is what has been going on with me. I read that T4 is also stored in your liver, and maybe when you go to T3 only some of that stored T4 gets " liberated " when your system detects that there is a sudden shut-off of T4 (once you stop Armour). So, it sounds reasonable that it is a constant balancing between meds and what's circulating in your system. I backed off the Cytomel a lot in the last few days and I feel a little less bad. 1. As for adrenal issues- If the temps are fluctuating during the same time each day does that mean I might need to take more? 2. Yes, I had tons of candida issues for years. Does the Cytomel exacerbate candida- like make it proliferate more? I've noticed since starting cytomel that funny taste and some candida issues returning-in fact the candida symptoms might be partly what's been happening - and I have been attributing it to returning thyroid issues. Val mentioned that the low temps resulting from low thryoid causes candida to grow. > > >2. Guest guest
Nick, Thanks for sharing the info about the period going from T4/T3 to T3 only,it really helps a lot.I do have another question also. Why after being on T3 only and clearing the RT3 receptors going back to natural or T4/T3 combination does not work for many people. It seems that happened to you to. " After that " clearance " you will find that your requirements have > stabilized, I made one attempt to go back onto natural and it didn't > work for me so have decided to stay on T3 only permanently. I might > even tell my Dr one day! " If you have cleared the receptors and also you regulated the cortisol levels, why the body can't get to work back to normal how it suppose to work? By that I mean you have to have some T4 in your system for back up. I know that there are a lot of reasons for building high levels RT3,but if you find out and fix this shouldn't the body to go back to work normal? Also do you think is it safe to live and be on T3 only for your life, without adding some T4? Thanks a lot Milena > > >1. Does " been through worse " mean they felt worse taking Cytomel than when they took Armour? I feel worse. i am talking about objective markers of hypo that have returned from when I took Armour. Why after being on T3 only and clearing the RT3 receptors going back to natural or T4/T3 combination does not work for many people. It seems that happened to you to. No idea, I've been self treating for thyroid for 8 years now and have a pretty good feel for how my body is reacting to it. This works for me and I'm happy to keep goingg like it, It's a lot cheaper with 125 of the Mexican Cynomel than it was on Armour imported from the US when I was on 12 grains a day. >I know that there are a lot of reasons for building high levels RT3,but if you find out and fix this shouldn't the body to go back to work normal? Also do you think is it safe to live and be on T3 only for your life, without adding some T4? My body seems to function perfectly well on the T3. It wasn't reliably converting the T4 anyway so I don't feel the lack of it. I always had to multidose Armour to feel well, I discovered that for myself back in 1999 before any of the web sites were suggesting it. I don't know " why " , I just know " what " and am happy to do what works for me. I feel better than I have for many years, and I was doing well on Armour as long as I took a lot of it, It was the reformulation that brought me back to the web and caused me to find this group when I was trying to find out if I was the only person having trouble with Armour, I seriously thought that it was counterfeit when I first had trouble with it, that new formulation caused me to crash badly. Guest guest
Nick, for how long have you been on T3 only? You said, you have treated yourself for 8 years. I agree with you on that " This works for > me and I'm happy to keep going like it " I'm trying to learn as much as possible, since I have been on thyroid treatment for 22 years on T4 only and had problems during all this time but was able to function, until 2 years ago when I crashed badly. I went to a doctor for a year who scared me a lot for being on T3 only and I worry. He is endo,PhD and wrote a book about thyroid treatment and he told me that the body will be OK on T3 only for a while but in a long term needs both of them.I don't get it!!! How doctors spending all their life on studding in this field may be so wrong, which I hope is the case. It still worries me,even people like Val are a prove that you can be OK on T3 only. I appreciate your opinion. Thanks Milena > > >Thanks for sharing the info about the period going from T4/T3 to T3 only,it really helps a lot.I do have another question also. Guest guest
>Nick, for how long have you been on T3 only? You said, you have treated yourself for 8 years. Potted history, started Armour or generic Thyroid USP in 1999. That was when Dr Peatsfield was in full practice. When the General Medical Council over here had a falling out with him because he was helping people and they felt well with his treatment rather than just treating numbers and doling out antidepressants (me, cynical, never) I found sources on the web and started buying Armour or NT direct. Dr Peatsfield empowered his patients, taught them how to adjust dose and what to look for, so I was self treating under supervision with him and it was a small step to carrying on. Last spring when Armour reformulated I crashed badly, fortunately I found enough dregs of other batches around the house to prove it was that and to keep functioning while getting new supplies, this brought me back to the thyroid groups on the web and I discovered that tissue resistance to thyroid hormone, which is what I assumed I had due to the amount I needed to take, was often related to RT3. I ordered some T3 and started taking it with Val's guidance and cleared resistance. I was low on T3 (a cocked up order on my part) and had plenty of Natural so tried a swap back, it didn't work for me so I went T3 only and stayed there and have made sure I keep lots in stock. I'm aiming to always have 3 months worth in stock as a minimum, I don't like the idea of running low! It works for me and I am planning to stay on it. Nick. Can't remember if I said, been on T3 only (apart from a failed swap back) since the beginning of May this year. Someone said Dr Lowe has been on T3 only for 20 years. Guest guest
Thank you Nick for your detailed respond.Yes,I think Dr.Low has been on T3 only for many years. If I'm not mistaken, I think he had a disagreement about living on T3 only with Dr.Blanchard ,who is the endo I was talking about. I guess there is a lot new info about the thyroid treatment, which for some reason or another most of the doctors don't want to except for reliable and they continue practicing the same old. That's why we are in this situation ,but I'm lucky finding this forum and Val helping us so much in all the mess. Thanks a lot again. Milena > > >Nick, for how long have you been on T3 only? That is what was so special about Dr Peatsfield, he was hypo himself and knew he felt better on Armour than on T4 only. Having discovered that he was then helping other people. The best thyroid Docs seem to be ones suffering from the condition themselves. Nick
