I'm having to do a very quick scan of mail because with home I just don't

have much time. I saw the mention of Tryptophan without reading the link. I know

from my psychiatrist brother, who originally gave it to his daughter, that there

have been quite substantial problems with it. My information is at least a

couple of years old, and i could have missed something important on the list,

but I write in haste and hope this helps. Martha

  • 5 years later...

Approx 150mg as needed, perhaps two doses of that, then it goes away. That's

what I used for my son who is approx 50 lbs, I haven't needed it in quite some

time. I imagine if I start him back on ALA anytime soon I will need it.

We have been using it successfully for several months. The OCD behaviors are not

completely gone, but I see a huge difference if I forget to give it.

My son is 11. He weighs 70 lbs. He takes 4g/ 3 times a day. We had to really

experiment to find optimal dosage. We use Kirkman's. It's the most

cost-effective for how much we have to use. It dissolves very easily so it's

easy to mix into juice or water. They include a tiny scoop with it. Two scoops=

1 gram. On the label it says you can do up to 4 grams 2-3 times a day.

Don't give up if it doesn't seem to help right away. The representative at

Kirkman's said it can take up to 8 weeks to start to see changes (although they

don't market it as being helpful for OCD; I learned that it helps here on this

group).

Best Wishes!

It's alot of trial and error to find the right dose.

The bottle says you can go up to 4 grams 3x a day.

I would give it a few days at this dose and see what happens. The way I finally

figured out optimal dose was to cut back a bit on the dose for a day or two and

the OCD seemed worse.

It also might help to split it into 3 doses if you can. That's what works best

for my son. Just something to keep in mind.

Hang in there!

My son will do this odd ritual where he licks each finger then touches his ears

in succession. He used to also do this with touching his feet then his ears. His

poor little ears were getting so red and raw because he was doing it so much.

He barely does it at all anymore, except when he gets super-anxious, but it's

nothing as bad as it used to be.

He's also gotten less particular about everything being a " certain way " as far

as where things are placed.
