Guest guest
I can only speak for myself, but since my surgery I don't really crave a lot of the foods I did before surgery. I was a meat and potatoes girl, heavy on the carbohydrates and red meat, not too bad on the sugars. I still have what I call episodes of " mouth " or " Mind " hunger, but if I do indulge the old taste buds just don't appreciate those delicacies anymore. Almost all meats right now make me nauseous, not enough to throw up, just queasy so there is no joy in eating them. This is really kind of weird because the first month after my surgery when I was basically on fruit juices and Ensure, I cheated (Dr. R quit reading....) and ate several bites of a rib-eye steak, ground up. It didn't make me sick but I was stuffed after 2 bites. Now, I can't even stand the thought of eating meat....I expect that to get better with time, but even so my taste buds do seem to have changed since the surgery. I have found that if I am really craving something then I'm better off taking a bite or two rather than obsessing over it. Ex: I started craving Banana Nut Muffins, the 2nd week after my surgery. When it got to the point that I was dreaming about them I went to the store and bought an Otis Spunklemeyer brand banana nut muffin. I came home, unwrapped that sucker, and enjoyed 2 whole bites. It tasted just like I wanted it to, but it took me 4 days to eat that one muffin. I consider the surgery as another tool to help me control/correct my poor eating habits and give me a " jumpstart " toward successful weight loss. It's not a matter of weakness (obesity is not a character flaw.....tatoo that on your hand and repeat it 100 times a day until you believe it....this is the unofficial motto of the MGB group) and your body punishing you as the only means to control your food obsessions or choices. You genuinely will not feel hungry, and physically your body will not require anything but the allowed juice, clear liquids etc. that you are allowed. I know for me the surgery has changed my taste for food (ex: 's french fries) so that I automatically make better choices. I don't know why that is so since the surgery had nothing to do with taste buds....but hey, I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. I firmly believe that Dr. R and his procedure have saved my life. My surgery was on Jan. 4, 1999. I was in the hospital 2 days, no complications, pre-op wt. of 314, as of 4-8-99 253. My blood pressure is down in the 130's/80's range and I haven't seen numbers like that since college. My mobility is improved and I generally feel better. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Guest guest
Pam, Like you I feel this surgery has changed my " taste " for things. I use to be a meat & potatos gal too, heavy on the potatos! I haven't attempted steak yet! Most other meats I do fine with. I don't crave chocolate once a month like I use to, I have had a " kiss " here and there, but not 1/2 the bag! With this surgery came a sense of wanting to do right for my body, something I've attempted before but for some reason didn't work. I too won't look a gift horse in the mouth! Guess we should all be asking Dr. R if he had subliminal messages playing while we were in the OR! lol Take Care, Kathy _________________________________________________________
