Guest guest
Has your regular doctor referred you to a psychiatrist? I think that would be very helpful! Psychiatric problems are related to physical happenings in the body, just like other illnesses and they need treated accordingly. It has nothing to do with willpower, faith, focusing on the positive etc. All of those things are great to get us through the ordinary ups and downs of life, but sometimes it is too much and we need to go get help. Please do so. It is a positive step for your life, not a sign of weakness. Guest guest
I think going to talk to a psyciatrist is a good idea. I will discuss it with the doctor. I will see if Ontario Works (welfare) will fund going to see a psyciatrist. Chantelle

Guest guest
Hi Chantelle, Totally agree with everything Kim said. Definitely get your doctor to refer you to a psychiatrist. They will know which meds to prescribe for you to help with your experiences of the moment. Seems to me that you have been experiencing these voices for some time now and I understand from people I work with that they can get very distressing and overwhelming. I do mental health work and have met lots of people who hear voices in the way that you describe. Various meds have helped them but different ones work differently for different people. These things are not necessarily a CHARGE thing. They are surprisingly common among the general population, but when they happen to you, they can be very isolating. People don't necessarily share the issues of voices so you don't usually get to meet or know of others who have experienced them. I hope your doctor does refer you to a psychiatrist who hopefully will be able to help you. Let us know how you get on. You are an amazingly strong woman and I am sure you will deal with this latest obstacle in the admirable way you have dealth with your other trials and tribulations. Wishing you all the best and please do come back for further support. Will try to e-again when I feel more coherent (missing my sleep thanks to the girls). Guest guest
Chantelle: i come from a family of psychiatrists (a truly mixed blessing). The one thing I do know is that there is help for " voices. " You must search for a psychiatrist (not a psychologist if you need meds). Things can be done. Martha Please keep me posted on how things go. I'll ask for specific advice from my brother, but he's in the states, and you need someone in Canada. On that note, a cousin is head of a medical school in western Canada...I'll try to help.

Guest guest
I have heard many discuss psychiatric-type symptoms in many of the children or young adults. It is great to have the young adults help verbalize some of what could be experienced, yet also good to know that each child with CHARGE could be very different in the what will occur due to the variability in CHARGE and the variability in experiences. A good partnership early on with a psychiatrist who can keep tabs on dev'p, and begin to KNOW the child throughout dev'p could be a suggestion. I'm sure by the early 20's there are MANY factors, both past medical experiences and sociological, which would interplay. I'm questioning in CHARGE what role the neurological " clutter " could play (such that sensory integration function could explain) in the expression of some psychiatric-type characteristics. As well, many have early experiences with eating which are not the norm, and food allergy, intollerance, as well as immune-dysfunction have been reported. We know that in more recent studies of schizophrenea, relationships to the colon have been found. Glutin, casin, and dairy free diets helped in some studies, as well as in cases of those with CHARGE. A good record log keeping track of mood, diet, sleep, weather, elimination, etc. could prove surprising and interesting for us all! Just also a note, I happened by this article today, and have included because of 'Asperger's' (on the autism spectrum) has been mentioned in relation to CHARGE in some posts. We would hate for a life-time of heavy, unnecessary medication when there could have been alternative answers. (as the case below) A. Gloyn Canada " Asperger's – It's a Syn-Drome " [ " Private Eye " magazine, No.1108, 24 June 2004 " In the Back " section, page 27.] (cut and shortened) .....Nick Priechenfried was only 14 when he was given his first dose of anti-psychotic drugs by a GP. Although another doctor took him off them, the reprieve was short-lived. Nick was correctly diagnosed with Asperger's but seven years later he was still sectioned and diagnosed as schizophrenic and put on the cocktail of psychiatric medicine his mother says wrecked his life. (cont'd.) He ended up in the Medium Secure Unit at Horton Hospital, Epsom, with very ill and disturbed patients. Even though leading autism experts confirmed the diagnosis of Asperger's, Nick's treatment with powerful anti-psychotics continued. Following other disastrous placements, Nick eventually went to the Shepherd Unit in Hertfordshire. Three years ago, psychiatrists there weaned him off all medication, resulting in a huge improvement in both his mental and physical health. As Nick says: " If you are put on anti-psychotics when you do not need them, you soon develop a psychosis. " What has happened to people like Piers, and Nick is nothing short of scandalous. But it is a simple message that they and their parents have been trying to convey to Ladyman and his fellow health chiefs. Not only is the continuing misdiagnosis, treatment and inappropriate placements for people with Asperger's devastating for those involved, it actually costs millions. An investment in proper services now – particularly with the huge increase in children being diagnosed on the autistic spectrum – would save money in the future. Why isn't the government listening?
