Guest guest
Okay, what has everyone else heard about this?? I would like others knowledge here, as this is unfamiliar territory to me! I have always read/been told/heard that at about 6 months babies need the extra iron from cereal that they cannot get from breastmilk! If anyone else can interject her, I would appreciate it! Not that I don't believe you, , LOL, I just need more than one perspective here! Thanks! Guest guest
Hmmm...my pediatrician started my dd on iron at four months anyway, so I didn't worry about it. She didn't eat solids until around a year and is a very healthy two year old now. I nursed my second ds for 15 months and my dd is 29 months and going strong. I didn't nurse my oldest ds (well, I did for four days, so I guess that's *something*). My second ds started solids around 7-8 months. Actually, I turned more to LLL for advice on my nurslings (of course I went to the doctor for check-ups and such, but it was reassuring to SEE other healthy, happy kids that had been exclusively breastfed). Well, I'm rambling now *G*. Good luck with your baby and don't let anyone pressure you into giving him solids too early. Even my pediatrician (who was very conservative IMO) said not to worry until she was over nine months and not taking an interest in solids. Your baby will let you know when he's ready for " real " food ) Kathy in Michigan Re: About the list >From: DnDn4kidz@... > > Okay, what has everyone else heard about this?? Guest guest
that at about 6 months babies need the extra iron from >cereal that they cannot get from breastmilk! The thing is, there IS less iron in breastmilk than formula and cereal. The iron in breastmilk is all absorbed by baby, whereas formula and cereal iron is not. Cereal's extra iron can actually interfere with the iron in the breastmilk being absorbed. I am sure someone here can give you the exact documentation of the info. I have no problem at all with you questioning what you hear from one person. I am sure, however, that others will back me up on this one!! You can always go ask the breastfeeding experts at the ParentsPlace breastfeeding bb. I have seen the info there. Happy hunting!! Guest guest
, Welcome to the list. Congratulations for sticking it out. You could always delay feeding and see how that goes. Also you don't have to start with cereal. You can start with fresh fruit and vegetables pureed. That way she won't fill up on cereal. We have all been discussing ways to increase milk production. Fenugreek capsules, Mother's milk tea, Fennel, and Brewer's Yeast have all been mentioned. You can definitely keep nursing for a long time as many women here will attest. Glad to have you and I am sure you will find lots of help here. Wendi Kaija 7yo Zaid 16mo(nursing)

What I am trying is to breastfeed her BEFORE I give her the cereal, so she won't be too full to nurse. Does that make sense? >> Welcome to the list , Exactly the same thing happened to my son. My first daughter was bottlefed, but I b/f my son for 10 1/2 months. He was started on solids at 4 months (which my health visitor considered late!!!).At 6 months he was 20 lb and he didn't gain any weight for about another 4 months. I think this was because I fed him way too much solids and he wasn't getting enough milk. When I think back I realise that he was only feeding 3 times a day for a minute or two at a time. For some reason it didn't occur to me that he wasn't getting enough! From the age of 1 - 2 1/2 he was constantly ill with various infections, hospitalised twice (suspected meningitis once) and I think this may well be attributable in some part to his inadequate diet. Wth my third (now 9 months) she had no solids at all until about 7 months when she started with an occasional taste of table food. She is now on just one meal a day which is whatever we are eating at dinner time. She has gained weight steadily on the 91st percentile and weighed 22 pounds 2 weeks ago.I went through similar soul searching at 4 months and six months wondering if I was doing the right thing, when EVERY one else is starting their baby on solids, but I am convinced now that I have as she is the picture of health! Guest guest
Okay, first I want to thank everyone for their advice/experiences! I spoke with the lactation consultant last night who helped me with my 3rd child, when the pediatricians told me to stop breastfeeding him because he wasnt' gaining weight. At that time, we took three days, and documented everything that went into and came out of my son. I was actually angry at what we found! My normal schedule with my son was that he would eat three meals of Gerber baby food and cereal each day, before I would breastfeed him. What we found was that on most days, he would get UNDER 100 calories from all three 'meals' combined!(look at a jar of baby food, most, especially the veggies, only contain around 20 calories!) Jordan would get full on the foods, then would hardly nurse, and that is why from 6-9 months he failed to gain weight, that is the time I put him on the 'meal' schedule! So, after speaking with Betty last night, what I've decided to do with Brittney is breastfeed her FIRST, then give her a small amount of cereal ONCE a day. According to Betty, who is a certified Lactation Consultant, at around SEVEN(not the six I thought)months, babies DO need some kind of iron supplement. She said breastmilk DOES have iron, but at around seven months, babies absorb the iron in breastmilk a lot faster than in previous months. So, instead of putting Britt on baby food as meals, duh, now that I know baby food isn't actually geared toward healthy MEALS for babies, which really makes me angry that the jars don't SAY so, I will just give her a little cereal for the iron that she needs AFTER I nurse her! Whew, okay...eased my worries now! LOL And, since I noticed we can share pictures here<grin>, I will attach one, to show you all why I don't want my little rollie pollie to stop gaining weight! LOL I got a lot of grief from my husbands family with Jordan that he was so little BECAUSE I breastfed him! One of my in laws went so far as to ask me when Brittney was born if I planned to breastfeed her, since I didn't do such a good job at it with Jordan, as she put it! It's nice to be able to show them by Britt's size, that they were completely wrong about why Jordan was so small!!! Thanks again to all who offered advice and support! Guest guest
She's a cutie ! ! I don't think you have to worry about them saying she's not gaining enough.... ) Her little rolls are adorable ! I agree with the baby food bit. There is nothing to be gained by it.... Like you said, the calories are like next to nothing ! When we're eating I give her a couple bits of whatever I have but she's always breastfed first.... I haven't given her any vitamins because my pediatrician said she doesn't need it being breastfed. But I always kinda in the back of my head wondered about that. Now I think I'm going to get her the polyvisol and start giving it to her.
