I have no idea how I did that! It was funny actually. I had surgery on

Thursday the 25th and then last Thursday I had to see Dr. R. and I had lost

22 lbs in 7 days! I was speachless! He said it was mostly water weight, but

I was on my way. I guess I just did what he told me. Juice and yogurt only.

And it was hard to keep yogurt in a hotel room so I only had it once. My

weight before surgery was 292 lbs. As of last Thursday (the 1st) I was 270.5

lbs. :) I can't complain. I think I'll wait a couple more weeks and go see

my GP and weigh in again! :)

Another thing to consider is the cost. Dr. Fobi's total cost is around

$40,000 compared to $15-25 for Dr. R's minibypass. Dr. Fobi on tv was what

made me get interested in the surgery so I researched his procedure first.

His pouch is also only 1 ounce--very, very small. HIs patients do seem very

satisfied however. I am one of the waiting-on-the-insurance crowd, but it

is Dr. R for me.

Katy,

I'm a former guzzler too! But wait you'll be able

to drink more later. At least I can now being 3 months

post op. If I am not eating I can drink pretty

steadily, can't chug down a big glass of water but can

take decent size swallows of it continuously till I

feel quenched! I found it easier to limit my intake

of water by using a water bottle with a pull up top on

it, so that you have to squeeze the amount in. This

help me! Also, you'll find you take a water bottle

wherever you go! And if you forget it, you'll be

buying another! LOL

Take Care - Kathy

Katy and other postops,

Did you have cravings and head hunger soon after surgery? I noticed in

Bonnie's post that she is wanting to chew and I am wanting to eat anything

and everything that I can think of. I am faithfully sticking to liquids,

but really want FOOD.

How long before this passes?

I kind of think that once I feel up to doing more, get back to work full

time, etc., it will not be so bad, because I can do other things to take my

mind off food. But for the time being, it is bad.

I might go to my office and do some work today for a couple of hours. That

will be great!

Take care,

I don't know about everybody else, but the thought of most food scares me.

I'm to afraid that I'll end up hurting myself. The only thing that has a

tendancy to annoy me is Coca~Cola. If I see a can or a bottle or even a 12

pack case it bugs me to no end! I will admit that you have to have a large

variety of juices to chose from in order to not go crazy! It may seem silly,

but you can buy little 7 oz bottles of apple juice (White House) and put them

in the freezer for a couple of hours. It makes them slushy so it's not just

the same old juice feeling going down. It makes for a little more substance.

Hope this was at least a little helpful. :)

Way to go Bonnie on your recovery. I keep a copy of people's recovery to

show my husband so he know what people go through and how they recover.

He,of course,is worried about my having major surgery, but will support

me any way he can. I am really lucky for that. He just wants to make

sure that my surgery doesn't interfere with my golf game.Do a practice

swing for me. How does it feel?

I just watched the Roseanne show (Rerun) and Dr. Phobi was her guest.

I honestly didn't start craving food till 4 weeks

post op or more, and what I did crave is minimal. I

don't crave soda ( was addicted to diet coke) I don't

crave chocolate either. As well I was a big bread and

other carbs eater, again I don't want for them. Very

odd, and I guess very fortunate for me that I don't! I

actually take the bread off of things as now I see it

as wasting precious stomach space! Why eat that when

I can have something better for me! Thats really the

way I look at things now.

My only craving is seltzer water, I have tried it

over ice once it was defizzed some, but can't enjoy it

the way I use to!

You know, Merritt, that is exactly how I feel. This past Basketball

Season, I was sitting with a friend watching the game and this lady that

we both knew walked in. She immediately said to me, See so and so

there. She just had THAT surgery. (Meaning the Open Gastric Bypass). I

felt so sorry for her. Not that she heard what the lady said, but that

someone was taking away her joy. It really is cruel. I'm only telling

my immediate family. The others can just wonder. LOL

  • 2 years later...

The other day someone asked how I am doing. Well, here it goes:

Thanksgiving here was quiet. I had nearly everything done the night before

so we just had to pop it in the oven to heat it up.

Well, except the bird, of course. That we put in around 11PM and cooked at

250 all night. By the time it came to carve, it was falling off the bones.

I didn't make my usual cranberry pie. I did make pumpkin and Mom purchased

two pies from the local Catholic school. I didn't want all of the

temptation around, so, I just didn't make the second (fourth!) pie.

We had turkey and stuffing, sweet corn cake (ala chi-chis), green bean

casserole (no one liked it, so I won't be making it again!), baked beans,

mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Dessert was pumpkin pie, chocolate pie

and coconut cream pie.

After dinner we played a game of Upwords and then Mom took (my 13 y.o.)

home with her. They left by 3 p.m.. DH and I didn't know what to do with

ourselves. We watched t.v. Thursday evening.

Friday we slept until noon. After we finally got up DH was called by work

and we came in for an hour or so. Then we went shopping. We didn't buy a

lot ... just a couple of books. DH was paged 3 more times in the evening and

ended up going in to work for awhile.

Saturday we slept late again before venturing out for more shopping. We

went in search of a back-packing back pack (internal frame) for .

is going to go to Philmont in June. He'll be going out attached to a Boy

Scout troop in State College. He'll be in Colorado 4 days and at Philmont

for 10. All of it will be back-packing and camping.

Philmont is one of the 3 US " high adventure " BS camps. It's located in

Cimmaron, NM. It's like Mecca to the US scouts. There are two places for

scouts to 'long' to go (here in the US) ... Philmont and National BS

Jamboree at Fort A P Hill. The other high adventure places are Sea Base in

FL Keys (they take you to the island and leave you there w/ a guide for days

of scuba and swim), and some place in MN ... I think it's whitewater w/

camping and climbing.

So, we spent Saturday looking for a good back-pack. We also purchased some

more books and some music (sheet music for the piano) for 's Christmas

gifts. We went to the tree-lighting in downtown State College and watched

Santa arrive and then out to dinner after (I had chicken marsala -- it was

okay, but not worth the POINTS since the caramelized onions were

overpowering). On the way home we stopped at Best Buy and looked at the

TVs. DH and I have decided/agreed that after my car is paid off (next Oct.)

we're going to upgrade our TV. We're looking at a 30-something inch HDTV,

but I must admit I was enthralled with the 52-54-inch picture in a picture

ones. =-) (the " small " picture was 19 " !)

Sunday was more of the same ... relaxing, reading and just taking it easy.

Monday we came to work, but I only did half a day. Mom brought PJ home just

after noon. I was home to clean and get ready for my Tupperware party on

Tuesday. I only did a half-day again today to 'finish' the house. I didn't

have a WHOLE lot to do, but not something I wanted to have to HURRY to do in

the evening. The Tupperware lady came around 6 and we wouldn't have gotten

home until 5:30-5:45 if I worked the whole day.

Yesterday was weigh in and I lost 2.4 lbs. It must have been all of the

walking. =-) My 15 minutes a day of exercise is going well. I've found

that I'm normally doing MORE than 15 minutes. I have to admit I didn't do

my 15 yesterday. It was rainy and nasty, so instead of walking to the Boy

Scout meeting, I drove the 1/2 mile. (Bad me!)

So, that's the past few days for me.

Ida
