Guest guest
Is anyone riding a Recumbent Bike (stationary)? I tried out one on Wed. at the PT's place and some other machines. Interestingly, ever since then I have had a complete dissappearance of my 6 month old back pain! I don't know anything about the bike, but it was fun and easy and comfortable! Guest guest
We have an old, I believe Shwinn Air-Dyne bike. Its resistance is the air it moves. That thing is noisy so we got replacement. I test drove some at Dick's Sporting Goods and Sears. The one I liked best was an Edge 491 by Fitness Quest (www.fitnessquest.com). They have an add on the internet for $349.99 with free shipping. Because Dick's had the bike and said they would match prices, with the free shipping ment that I would pay only $350, I tried to get Dick's to match the price. They said the internet wasn't the same even with the free shipping. Well, Dick's wanted $50 more so I went with Fitness Quest on the net. It came, I believe UPS, in less than a week. Would I buy the bike again, Yes. There are 2 types of resistance mechanisms used in these bikes that I know of. A band or maybe a break pad that controls resistance. Then there is magnetic resistance. This bike uses magnetic resistance. What ever bike you get make sure it is magnetic resistance. To me, the recumbent position makes it easier to exercise, period, and read a book or magazine, well that is much easier. As I saw someone mention, with the vertical type they tend to lift themselfs up on the upper resistance levels. Believe me I don't have that problem (I'm overweight and high BP). If I pumped that hard long enough to do me good it would kill me. The bike has a built in heart rate monitor and it adjust the resistance to maintain your heart rate at a 'programmed' safe level. I have a heart rate monitor watch with a band that goes around my chest. I find that using the secondary watch HRM and adjusting the resistance level myself is much better. Yes, I agree with you, some of the bikes are not much more than a toy. Comfort and long term durability is not what they are after, just your money. I plan on living with this bike The Rest Of My Life. Its definitly worth it to be comfortable and something I can make as enjoyable to use as possible. Otherwise I'll never use it and it will be a waste of my money. That was my thoughts wien I was buying it. Recumbent bike > Does anyone have an at-home recumbent bike? Guest guest
I'm at work right now, but will check on the brand when I get home and let you know. > > Kerri Thanks Kerri! I was wondering about the workout, but since he hates the treadmill and really likes bikes, I figured it would be worth it for him, and then I could use it to switch up my cardio some. I have to say, I don't like cardio days, just so boring! Riya
Guest guest
Hi everyone, First I'm sorry to hear there are some members with pain levels up; I pray things will get better! I was curious after Dave mentioned the recumbent bike just how many people have used one and what you though about it? I've been thinking about getting one. I'm only 36 and can't walk down the block; I don't want my body to just waste away plus I need some excercise. I have heard these bikes are easy on bad backs. Any help would be appreciated! Everyone have a great day! Hugs, I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish He didn't trust me so much. >I'm not alone (hubby and two kids) and feel VERY ALONE and SAD. Still going >to PT. Helped low back some, but thoracic is TERRIBLE. PT guy, who is >actually VERY good, said no more pussy footin' around and has done some much >more " aggressive " stuff. Boy, am I hurtin' BAD. No pain meds (nobody will >give me anything), anti-inflammatory is a joke. I'm SO sick of all this...an >all this is just because a 22 YO won't listen to her passenger while trying >to find an address in a town where they don't live. ARGH... > >Joi I'm sorry to hear you are in this much pain and can't get proper pain medication. Until you can get properly medicated here are two things you can try. One is Ice Packs. Today my Thoracic region and right shoulder blade was killing me. I sat in my recliner with an ice pack wrapped in a lightweight dish towel. I also meant to take my afternoon pain meds a Vicoden and a muscle relaxer. Well after about 10-15 minutes the pain came down to a much more bearable level to the point where I could take a nap. After I awoke I realized I never took my meds. so the ice and relaxation alone did the job. Another thing that works is exercise. Now I can hear you all saying Yeah right. I went to PT about a week ago. I was in pain at about a level 7-8. I thought she would go easy on me. Instead she told me to try the exercise bike and treadmill. Well at first for 5 minutes it hurt more, but then it got easier. When I was done with 15 minutes on the treadmill and 15 minutes on the recumbent bike my pain level had dropped down to about a 3. She told me that it was because the endorfins (sp?) kicked in from my mind. A runners high. She asked me at my next appointment how long it lasted. I told her about 4 hours. I really did work. But doing just a walk didn't cut it. You need to get your heart rate up. In my case to around 115 BPM. So until you can get proper meds these are worth a try. And I do understand the alone and sad. you are depressed, maybe clinically depressed. I was on several different anti-depressants over the years. Most work until a point and then stop. Currently I'm on a new one called Pristiq. It has really helped me. I was VERY depressed before the change. It has really made a difference. Keep on posting. It had a seat that adjusted forward & back and the seat back which was mesh also adjusted from straight up to a reclining position. This really helped with making it easy on the back. It also had a well cushioned seat. They had me try three different types of equipment. The bike, the treadmill, and an elliptical or stepper machine. The stepper was the hardest for me, not on my back but on my leg pain. I wanted to try them because my wife had us join a gym on an impulse buy and it kills me to pay the bill every month, so we need to use more than the pool. We also try to walk at least three times a week. We walk as much as 4 miles on a dirt/gravelled walkway in a real nice park / stream setting. I can walk much on that type of setting, but walking on concrete or in a mall kills my back in 5 minutes. My pain has really been up the past few days, especially last night and this morning. Which is strange because the weather is beautiful so I'm not sure why. But I got no sleep and went through about 7 ice packs and a couple of massages. Well take care everyone. The recumbent bike I used was a stationary one at PT, though I've looked at getting one for the street for years. The one at PT was great. Guest guest
Hi Jeannie, Thanks for your opinion on the bikes; I'm going to PT again soon and am hoping I can try one out there. I am so sorry life is so stressfull for you & your daughter right now! The economy is so bad and so many families are in trouble. I will keep you all in my thoughts & prayers. Please try to take care of yourself so you don't end up in a miserable flare! Hugs, I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish He didn't trust me so much. From: Abbott <jeannieboo1@...> Subject: Re: recumbent bike neck pain Date: Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 5:35 AM Dear I really like the recumbent bike-had to use it after both knee replacements, had to start out using the pedals in reverse 'cause it's easier in the beginning after knee surgeries. Used it for PT in another surgery, just can't remember. The only problem was the places I had PT at had bikes that had very narrow seats-and back then I was still heavy. It never bothered my back at all. If I had space for one, I'd get one in a heartbeat-that' s how much i liked them. I think my epidural I had finally kicked in, but it took a long time though-but I can say that my pain level is down a tad bit. Just having so much stress in my life I've been having panic attacks. My daughter is very close to being evicted-she' s having so many panic attacks they put her on Klonepin. I run for xanax. It breaks my heart I can't help her, and she knows her anxiety rubs off on me, so she won't call much. They're on welfare, which gives them dental, and better treatment for my grandson's autism, but my son in-law hasn't found a job, and he's in a work program where he has to apply at 15 places a week. He's had one call bac-it sounds like a scam, he had to go door to door selling something. Wish they could live here, we could rent a house and all be together, but Nv. has sorry benefits for those who need them, and we definitely can't support 6 people on what my husband and I take in from his job and my SSDI. Everything has hit at once, and I'm trying to stay in control so I won't get any flare-ups, but it's a battle. Thanks for reading what just started out as a comment on the reumbent bike! We have an exercise room in our clubhouse, it just has regular bike, but I can use the treadmill at least. Guest guest
Hi Dave, I understand about the differences in walking surfaces. After my spine surgery my Dr told me to walk as much as possible but not at the mall because the floor have zero absorbtion and they are very hard on backs. Thanks for the info on the bikes. I'm looking at getting a stationary one; do you know about how much they cost? I'm not sure where to start looking for them. Hope you have a nice low pain day! Hugs, >Hi everyone, >First I'm sorry to hear there are some members with pain levels up; >I pray things will get better! >I was curious after Dave mentioned the recumbent bike just how many >people have used one and what you though about it? Guest guest
I use one at PT and even with my near constant low back pain; it does NOT hurt to use it.
