Guest guest
Hi , I have a 5 year old with a feeding disorder with oral aversion as well as ASD. We've been using ideas from a book called Food Chaining to help overcome similar challenges. http://www.amazon.com/Food-Chaining-Feeding-Problems-Child%C2%92s/dp/1600940161 You might want to grab a copy of it and I'd consider seeking out the help of a qualified feeding disorder specialist. Good Luck. Ed Hello group,We have a 4 year old that we started the GFCF diet back in July. He eats very little meat and no fruits or veggies at all. He used to drink juice and I was able to hide vitamins in his juice but he figured it out after a few weeks and now stopped drinking juice altogether. I then tried hiding the vitamins in his ketchup and that lasted about 2 weeks. He literally stop eating now with the exception of gorilla cereal, pretzels and potato chips. That's it! Nothing else. He will only drink water so I can't really hide any vitamins, enzymes or probiotics in anything. I baked muffins and cookies for him and he refused to try any of them. I also tried smoothies and milkshakes with no luck as well. I have tried to syringe the vitamins, enzymes, and probiotics but have been unsuccessful -- he will not give in even with my husband holding him down with his head unable to move for over 30 minutes -- he is able to keep the liquid in the back of his throat and not swallow, and eventually succeeds in pushing it over the side of his mouth and out of his mouth! He is very strong considering he doesn't eat much! I am at the point where I feel we need to put the gluten back into his diet to get food in his body, but I really don't want to. Does anyone have any advice as to what we should do? About 2 months ago, we experienced the same thing and we held out for as long as we could and he was very stubborn and would not give in. Finally, he became very lethargic and we had to give in and gave him Popeye's chicken. I have spoken to our DAN! doctor and was told to try the Brainchild Nutritionals Ultra sensitive vitamins with him and we still don't any luck it that either.Sorry for the long email. Any advice at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Guest guest
Hi , I have three ASD children and have had similar feeding issues. Do you think you could get him to take digestive enzymes? Then you could give him some forbidden foods just for nutrition and not completely blow the diet. There are chewables, capsule or bulk powder forms. Two of my kids will now take the chewables...and one I still have to put the enzyme powder in some food or juice. The use of enzymes could help you transition easier into the diet. You might even be able to bribe him into taking the enzyme in order to get a certain food. This actually helped me break some of the stubbornness with one child. The other thing that helped us a lot was our neurodevelopmental program. We had to do a lot of oral stim exercises as well as taste stimulation. Hope that helps.
Guest guest
Hi , I have tried to put the digestive enzymes into my son's ketchup yesterday. He figured it out and stopped eating the ketchup now. He is definitely very stubborn. I am able to get my older ASD son to take his chewable enzymes but my 4 year old ASD child is extremely tough and extremely taste sensitive. He will get very angry if I dip his chips into the ketchup. He will throw his foods and everything else on the table across the room. He has a very bad temper and he will go into a very bad meltdown. I am going to try again later with his favorite forbidden food along with the enzymes. I will try to bribe him but I know it will be tough since he doesn't take bribery very well either. I hope I can break his stubbornness. He is totally opposite from his older brother. The neurodevelopmental program you mentioned below is that something the school system offers or is that through a hospital or some specalist? Thanks for your advice and for sharing your experience. > > Hi , > > I have three ASD children and have had similar feeding issues. Do you think you could get him to take digestive enzymes? Guest guest
Oh wow ! Sounds awfully familiar. It is absolutely amazing how stubborn they can be. I really thought my daughter was a new breed of stubborn. For about 2 years we had to have Motrin suppositories made at the compounding pharmacy because we could NOT get medicine in her any other way. Here are a couple of tips that I have found work at one time or another. I stopped trying to " hide " supplements anymore. It doesn't work any longer with my kids. I place them on the counter in the kitchen and tell them they have to take some vitamins. Of course at first it is not nice and there was a lot of screaming, spitting, vomiting, kicking...you get the picture. But I treated it as if it were medicine that they had to take. And eventually it worked. They still fuss about getting on the counter because they know what's up. But, nevertheless, It is much better this way than trying to trick them because they are not " distrusting " food constantly. Before that method, I did something that worked with one child. She was super sensitive to detecting supplements in her drink or food. i would give her a normal juice drink (in a cup on the table with a straw) and after she started drinking it...I would have another small cup ready with a little bit of the same juice and supplements mixed up. Then I would add some from the other cup to what she was drinking (as she was drinking it). I would say " more juice " while I was pouring it. That really seemed to work with her. She would initially taste the juice to see if there was something in it...but once she realized it was ok...I could add to it after she started drinking and she wouldn't notice (or care...not sure which). oh the ND program is NACD.org. The program has been amazing. And yes, unfortunately it is a private pay program. I'll keep thinking if there were any other things that worked. Guest guest
Oh man, does this sound like my 5 yr-old son! He is also a crunchy-foods-only kid & no fruit or veggies. We just started seeing a feeding specialist to help us switch to gfcf again. Not much progress yet. She did suggest something called veggie straws--they're crunchy baked rice pieces that are shaped like French fries & they're salted & made with vegetable powder. I'm going to google it. I also ordered something called an Oraflow cup that helps kids swallow pills, since my son can't swallow pills on his own yet & he totally fights the syringe. Anyway, I know the special hell you're going through. My son only eats a few things, too, and of course none of those things is something I can hide supplements in. I hope we can both get some practical help on this board. Hi , I have a 5 year old with a feeding disorder with oral aversion as well as ASD. Guest guest
what kind of chips? what pretzels. first thought is you have a child with yeast issues with what they are or eating OR there is an opiate they are still getting from these foods or something they are allergic to. when they limit that is a first sign that it's something they SHOULDN"T have, pull them and try the foods you WANT them to eat, veggies, fruits, meats, they WILL protest at first but getting them on food with nutrition is vital for a healthy body! Guest guest
My daughter was like that but I wouldn't give in. I would syringe the supplements and she would walk right to the trash and spit it out. And I would say hey that was a $2.00 pill you just spit out (lol). I started dividing the supplements in half and would put in gluten free jam any thing that I could think of that was sweet to mask the taste. I would taste a little to see what it taste like and then find something to hide it in. And everyday you have to change up with a new idea because they will figure you out. Try sprinkling it over the cereal, the chips- small amounts. I started supplements in May 2009 and four months later I could just give it to her in a syringe and she would take it. Sometimes she tries to wingle away, I persist. My daughter has been gluten and casien free since April 09 and I still notice that she was still having negative response to food and was craving some foods to much. the things that your child eats sounds similar to what mine was eating. Potatoe chips everyday, the cereal and water - no juice ever not even as a baby. I was wondering if you heard of the low oxalate diet. My daughter been on it for 2 weeks (still gfcf) and now eats different veggies and drinks apple juice for the first time (she's 3) the website is www.lowoxalateinfo. they also have a yahoo group Try_Low_Oxalate. I have gotten so much info off the website and the group To: mb12 valtrex Sent: Sun, December 13, 2009 6:32:57 PMSubject: Re: Please help! Guest guest
Some zinc could help him be able to smell and taste his food better, which would make it more appealing. You can get liquid ionic zinc here: www.kornax.com When the body is busy fighting infection it uses a lot of zinc. Many of our kids are very low in zinc because of their autoimmune issues and constant inflammation. That's what I would try. > > Hello group, > > We have a 4 year old that we started the GFCF diet back in July. He eats very little meat and no fruits or veggies at all. Guest guest
Hello. I have a 4 year old that only eats crunchy foods too. We are not doing gf/cf because he would starve to death. Have you looked into www.springboardamericalatina.com for supplement transdermal creams? They have several different kinds that you can use to get supplements into a child who won't take them orally. I also use transdermal zinc that I got at lee silsby pharmacy online. My son's only saving grace is that I get him to drink juice. I can make my own and he can get his nutrition that way. Maybe you could try juice again if you weren't hiding things in it. We tried feeding therapy and it only made it worse. We are now doing homeopathy and just started treating parasites. I'm hoping that will help. I know of somebody with a similar child who treated parasites and their child started eating better (not just crunchy foods). Other than that, just try to do whatever you can. I make my son super-crunchy bacon to eat and hashbrowns, etc. His food is almost burnt, but that is the only way he will eat it. If I make him toast, he only eats the crust. You could try making your own crackers with some shredded veggies in it, etc. Just keep thinking and I'm sure you will come up with healthier alternatives for him to eat. But I would try not to get stuck with only certain foods, keep changing them, if only a little. My son has some OCD issues so I try not to let him get stuck eating only one thing. Best of luck to you, > On Sun, Dec 13, 2009 at 1:51 PM, kellytchin > > wrote: > > > > Hello group, > > > > We have a 4 year old that we started the GFCF diet back in July. Guest guest
Hi Soraya, You can get those GFCF veges fries at Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I have tried those with him and he refused to even have them on his plate. My 8 year old don't mind eating them though. I had ordered the Oralflo from Amazon (waiting for it to come in) and I hope to be able to get both of my sons to swallow the pills especially the tiny ones. Their multi-vitamins are pretty big and some of the probiotics are big as well. Don't think I can get them to swallow those yet. Thanks and good luck to you with your son. I am in search of a feeding specialist. He had one at school but that specialist told me that my son does not have problems with foods. He only wants to eat what he likes. > > > > Hello group, > > > > We have a 4 year old that we started the GFCF diet back in July. He > > eats very little meat and no fruits or veggies at all. Guest guest
Hi Make him work for his gorilla cereal, pretzels and potato chips, my son did the same when we started GF/CF, i remember saying to my ABA tutor, he won't starve will he??? But we used soya choc and raisens which he absolutely loved as re-enforcers he only got them if he ate a mouthful of something else, then we built up slowely to two mouthfuls for every bit of soya choc or raisen, it is surprising how small you can chop up choc so you are only giving the smallest amount, my son eats everything now, good luck x To: mb12 valtrex From: odies4@...Date: Mon, 14 Dec 2009 15:46:39 +0000Subject: Re: Please help! Guest guest
Hi , Your son sounds just like mine. I will definitely look into the supplement transdermal creams. I didn't even know they existed. That is probably my best bet for now. My son is on the GFCF diet since July of this year but we had to cheat a few times already I will try the juice again in a few days. I was able to hide the vitamins in his juice for the first couple of weeks. Then he stopped drinking it after I had to up his vitamins. So now he won't even look at it. I will try the transdermal zinc too. Do you have to get a prescription for that? I suspect that he may have yeast and we will discuss with our DAN! to treat that. But I feel if I can't even get any basic stuff such vitamins, enzymes and probiotics into him first then it will be hard for me to move on to the next protocol. Thanks so much for your great advice. > > > > > > Hello group, > > > > > > We have a 4 year old that we started the GFCF diet back in July. Guest guest
Hi , We had to do the same thing. We had to get Motrin suppositories made for him when he was sick because we couldn't get any medicine into his body at all. I thought his stubbornness was the worst of the worst. I told my husband it's got to be from his side of the family! LOL! Are your kids able to swallow the medicines? Mine can't swallow them yet. I agree with you about hiding the medicines in their foods. I really don't want to do that any more. I will try the supplement transdermal cream that had suggested. That sounds like a very good option for my son. I am glad NACD was able to help your kids. We went with them about 6 years ago and spent a lot of money and got no results at all so we stopped. Thanks for all your great tips! > > >
Guest guest
Hi , This sound very familiar and I totally can relate to the refusal for eating. My son was in a similar situation about a year ago where he ate only 3 things. I thought that he was a picky eater and stubborn however he had serious underlying medical condition that made eating very painful for him. Not until we got the diagnosis for IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) and started treatment, the diet did not really change. Now that his tummy is in a much better shape he is willing and able to eat more foods and is curious about what we are eating. Please check with your DAN about any such underlying condition that is preventing your child from eating. About separating the food and supplements/medicines, I think in the long run you will be better off coming clean with your son. Once we told my son that we will give him medicine instead of 'sneaking' it in, he trusted us a lot more with the food. It is a long and hard road but please hang in there for your child's sake. Good luck and do send another email if you need more help and ideas. Regards, Meeta > > My daughter was like that but I wouldn't give in. I have gotten so much info off the website and the group > > > > ________________________________ > > To: mb12 valtrex > Sent: Sun, December 13, 2009 6:32:57 PM > Subject: Re: Please help! Guest guest
Hi Ed, Thanks so much for the book recommendation. I just ordered the book today. I was thinking of seeking help from a nutritionist but what you recommend sounds like a better choice. I will look into getting help from a qualified feeding disorder specialist. Thanks again for your help! > > > > > > > Hello group, > > > > We have a 4 year old that we started the GFCF diet back in July. He eats > > very little meat and no fruits or veggies at all. Guest guest
--Glad I could help. I checked my transdermal zinc and I got it from www.ourkidsasd.com. I also order stuff from lee silsby but not that one. Ourkidsasd has a few different zinc creams as well as a B-12 cream and I'm not sure what else. No script needed for these items. I do know that Springboard also has some creams, a couple called Autistique that are geared towards autistic individuals. I have even heard of probiotics that you can use transdermally. But I'm not sure how that would work or where you could get it. Creams seem to work pretty well for us when I can't get him to take a really bad tasting supp. It is a difficult road with few options, but you are not alone. Guest guest
my son only ate cruntchy stuff as well prediet. animal crackers, gram crackers, and a gallon of milk a day. 4 days into the diet he ate meat, veggies, fruits ect. don't let that stop you from moving forward. Re: Please help! What to do when your child stops eating???
