Love reading all the posts, but am wondering if I'm getting them all. I'll have to check on the group site. Well, I finally went to the podiatrist. He took an x-ray and looked at it, and kept saying, 'ouch'...did I tell ya all this? The memory just keeps getting worse! Anyway, he says I have a heck of a heel spur, and is ordering inserts for my shoes which will be in next wk. He seemed uncertain why my foot is so swollen, but told me to stretch my leg, calf and heel, 7 to 8x a day.Maybe that will help with the swelling. I also had an ingrown toenail--it was weird--I rarely get them, but it started about a wk or so ago, and within the last day, it got real hot and purple (big toe). He 'dealt' with that; I'll save the icky details, and it is much better today, 2 days later. Does anyone seem to have trouble with their hips? Can you get spasticity in your hips? I'm just real stiff these days. I'm having lots of spasms and cramping in my legs, esp. my calves. It started before these stretches I've been doing. When I woke up today, the TN pain was pretty bad. It was one of those times where I almost felt like I was having a stroke--my face got stuck in a weird grimace, and I was happy to be alone in bed! My right eye nearly shut, my mouth pulled down on that side, and I was stuck for close to 15 minutes. I knew it would pass, eventually, but I haven't had a moment like that for about 2 yrs. I don't know about where everyone else is at--but the weather here is glorious! It was bright, sunny, but only in the low 70's.Right now, it is in the 60's, and I think a real good night for sleeping. I have the attic fan on, and it is pulling the fresh air inside. Guest guest
Hey Kate. Owww! You poor thing! I hope the inserts will help.Im sure they will. What is going on? Why would that happen to your face?Did the docs know why last time? I would have been terrified. One time(before I new the heat messed with me)We were in the car with the heat on high and within 10 minutes something very strange happened to me.It was like I was paralyzed, couldnt move, talk, nothing. My fiance asked if I was ok and I couldnt speak, could only move my eyes to the side.He freaked out.It was one of the scariest things ive ever had happen.Lasted about 20 mins.My fiance turned the heat off, then after the 20 mins. I was able to utter a few words. He took me straight to the er.By then it was a lil better and they just made sure I didnt have a stroke or seizure. Anyways.I hope it dosnt happen to you again.I get pain in my hips. They arnt sure why.My x-rays were ok. But the baclofen does help some with it.It is soooo hot here! 109,yesterday,and 107 today. You have perfect weather!hugz, cassy Kate Rothschild wrote: > Hi all. Guest guest
Sharon~What do you attribute your hip pain to? Do you think it is MS, arthritis or..?I'm having low back pain as well. I know I have a compression fx in T11/T12, and I think this may be the source of pain.. I see my neuro again the end of Oct..In Dec. it will be 2 yrs since I was dx'd with MS, and also will mark by then, 6 infustions of Tysabri. I am tempted to ask my neuro if I could have another MRI in Dec., to see if there are any changes at all. At any time, are Evoked Potentials ever repeated? thanks for any responses, love, kate I do have problems with my hips at times. Guest guest
I think the hip pain is from several different sources: the way I walk when I'm hurting or spasticity in my back (again referred pain). I have also noticed that if I've been out of my synthroid I get an aching pain in my hips and lower back.Have you been evaluated be a PT to see what type of exercise you can safely do with the compression? Perhaps the bike riding is aggravating it? I'm sure you don't want to hear that so just stick you're fingers in your ears, okay? The truth is I really don't know what makes my hip hurt because I don't think I've ever talked to the doc about it :)Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
Connie, I believe it is MS related. I have the same problems. I walk a couple of yards and my hips seem to freeze up and hurt terrible, My Doc didn't see anything in my Mri, so he thinks it is MS related. I will spread to my back and then to my shoulders also. Guest guest
Sharon and Kate, I have terrible hip pain that flares off and on. I have never mentioned it to a doctor either—I don’t want any more tests J Some nights my hips throb as I try to go to sleep. Other times the pain is really intense and sharp. I have always attributed it to arthritis. Could it be MS related? Guest guest
Thanks for the info . I am trying to stretch my hips more and do hip flexor exercises. They seem to be less tight and painful for a little while afterwards. It is sometimes even hard to touch the top of my hip. I was worried I was getting arthritis on top of MS. My hands and fingers are pretty painful too. Wasn’t sure if it wasn’t just this darn “getting old”… Connie From: MSersLife [mailto:MSersLife ] On Behalf Of ftrascritt@... Guest guest
I've been noticing that I've been having alot of pain in both my knees this past week or so. I thought it was just arthritis. It hurts to walk and on one day I saw what I'm pretty sure was a huge varicose vein bulging out on my left leg right above the knee. I couldn't put any pressure on that leg without severe pain. The next day it was ok. My knees still get sore, they hurt when I wake up and throughout the day. Wondering if it is arthritis or MS related as well. So many ???? What's what? Hugs, Peggy > > Connie, > I believe it is MS related. I have the same problems. Guest guest
When we walk we put pressure on different muscles and tendons depending on what's going on with our MS bodies on any particular day. That's my own version of a scientific answer lol I have knee pain that comes and goes and I don't have arthritis. One thing about knee pain is if you have spasticity during the night when you are sleeping it makes your knees hurt the next day. That has happened to me often and my neuro agrees with me. I've woke up once in a while with my legs out stiff because of spasticity in my legs. hugs))Sharon This email is a natural hand made product. Guest guest
I get a lot of hip pain. Mine is due to the problems I have with the protruding disks and other problems with my spine. And a bit of scoliosis. A good chriopractor can help a lot. When my hip starts catching again or I get cramps in certain areas of my back , I go get an adjustment. I am usually fine again for a few weeks. The first time I threw my back out at 23 the doctor said looking at my xrays that I would probably be in a wheelchair by the time I turned 40. I turned 48 last feb and have worked in a job with lots of lifting and heavy work for over 20 years. In 94 the foot doctor told me I would be in an AFO brace the rest of my life , I was in one for 7 years and now am back out. A good chiropractor can help a lot of things. As to the muscle spasims in your calves and legs. I would ask your doctor to check on potassium levels and magnesium levels and calcium levels. I have Bartters syndrom a rare kidney disorder that wastes all three of these things in my urine. There are other things also that can make you low on any of these things. But when my potassium levels fall below 3.8 I get awful charlie horses. Normal ranges for potassium start at 3.5 , but some people can get symptoms a bit above the low normal range. I keep DRIED prunes on hand for a good source of potassium( higher than bananas or orange juice), dried apricots are also good. Low salt tomato juice ( I have to watch my salt) and bananas For me taking two Mag Tab SR (Niche)tablets right before bedtime has gotten rid of my restless leg syndrome at night and waking up with charlie horse cramps at night or early in the morning. The Mag Tab SR is avaiable over the counter and your pharmacy can special order it for you. Will be around $28-$30 for a bottle of a hundred. Take mag with a l00 calorie snack helps it to be absorbed well. Magnesium is an area that is just now coming into the sights of many doctors and researchers as something that is low in many american diets. If your magnesium is low then you body also has trouble holding onto the potassium in your body. Not enough calcium in the diet and in the body can cause muscle cramps as well. For me I get deep bone soreness when I run out of calcium supplement and don't get another bottle for a couple of days.
