Are the green tomatoes in fried green tomatoes unripened red ones or a variety of green tomatoes? If so, where does one get green tomatoes in California? I've wanted to make them for a long time after having them in Georgia many years ago.

Dana, they are unripened off the vine of gpa's garden. He passed 5 years ago, and I haven't had them since. My family is from Missouri, and they are very popular there.

My FIL grows them, but I haven't had green ones for awhile. My fatigue is so bad, that lately I don't even go outside unless I have to. The ground here is so hard. It's like hard packed sand.
