Guest guest
..has HUGE phenol issues - do any of your kids >And how do you do diet then? Doing SCD with phenol issues is not that hard, you just have to be careful that you don't eliminate all your child's sources of carbs, that is not healthy. Luke does fine with cashew or pecan instead of almond, which is high. He also gets the lower level fruits and veggies, just over and over again, so not much variety but still plenty intake of those good carbs. We also cannot use honey with him so we sweeten things with homemade pear sauce or pineapple juice or sometimes saccharin. Welcome, and GL! in NC Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/low-salicylate; , age 3; and , 23 mos All SCD since 1/26/04 No Mom is an island. but sometimes she needs one! Starting SCD after 6 months on GF/CF diet - HELP!! Help! My son (BEn age 4)has regressive autism - and one of the worst guts ever! Half a banana will give still give him diaherra up and down his whole body. He had a bad case of the stomach flu and ate virtually nothing for over 3 days (most importantly no potato or rice or supplements - staples of his GF/CF regimine. While he was sick - and not eating these things - he basically potty- trained himself, started doing much more imitative play, showing affection and interest in other, talking more, etc. We think all this means we should definitely do the SCD - essentially begun the die-off already. QUestions: - for those of you that did the non-dairy/caseine free - do you use the yogurt, cheeses, etc. that the diet recommends? How did you know? What about supplements - Ben needs but his are " illegal " as is his probiotic. Do you make your own yogurt - how did you replace " rice milk " or the child's desire for a thick drink? So appreciate any input - Feel slightly lost on this as so different from his current diet : has HUGE phenol issues - do any of your kids and how do you do diet then? Guest guest
> Help! My son (BEn age 4)has regressive autism - and one of the worst > guts ever! Welcome to the list! I think you will find pretty quickly that you have a lot in common with many of us here. In fact, my son was 4 when we started SCD a year ago. At that time, he'd been GFCF for 6 months and his gut was in terrible shape! I'll take a go at your questions, but I also want to encourage you to read www.pecanbread.com as most of your questions are actually answered there. Jody, our website creator, has done a fabulous job of addressing not only the more basic issues, but many of the complex ones as well. It's quite comprehensive. > QUestions: - for those of you that did the non-dairy/caseine free - > do you use the yogurt, cheeses, etc. that the diet recommends? How > did you know? The recommendation for previously CF kids is to do the diet dairy free for at least a few weeks, if not months, before adding the goat dairy products (homemade yogurt, legal cheeses). There is a good section on pecanbread about this. Many have successfully added dairy down the healing road, but many also remain dairy free and use probiotics or the wonderful nut yogurt (found in recipes on pecanbread) to get the good bugs repopulated. I personally have successfully added goat yogurt and goat cheddar at this point. > What about supplements - Ben needs but his are " illegal " as is his > probiotic. Legal supplements are on pecanbread, too. There is a nice list of legal and illegal additives as well as many specific products that are commonly used. A lot of people have either eliminated many supplements, and/or found legal replacements. However, this is an area where the family's choice is highly respected and it will ultimately be up to you to decide what to do. The good news is, there are many legal choices out there! Probiotics are specifically addressed. > Do you make your own yogurt - how did you replace " rice milk " or the > child's desire for a thick drink? Since you have been CF, I would recommend trying the nut yogurt and making some sort of milk drink with it. Homemade nut milk is legal, but usually isn't thick because it doesn't contain the highly illegal additives the store bought stuff has. > > So appreciate any input - Feel slightly lost on this as so different > from his current diet : has HUGE phenol issues - do any of your kids > and how do you do diet then? Many on the diet are doing a low-phenol version. You can search the archives and find tons of information on avoiding high phenolic foods. Also, a lot of people are getting good results by using the No-Fenol enzymes by Houston's. We are very glad you are here and are happy to help you make this transition. Please sign your posts with your name, your child's name, age, dx, and time on SCD (once you get started!) pecanbread has a " getting started " section, great recipes, tips for doing the diet, and a lot of other good stuff. Guest guest
Thanks so! I read the whole book last night and have been " at one " with the site for hours (just copied tons of recipies)! still, even our dev. pediatrician is not very familiar with the diet and she is worried I am cutting things out (those listed as " illegal " ). Still, sure the learning curve is all worth it. Thanks for advice on staying non-dairy for awhile, that concerned us. Am thinking transition of having no more rice milk will be the hardest thing to overcome. Will try nut yogurt. Not sure where extensive section on probiotics is on " pecanbread.com " as only lists one choice - did I miss something? Also, need one that is non-dairy, don't I? THanks for enzyme idea - like others I've known to use them, the " NO- phenols " tended to make Ben somewhat " high " . Will be starting Kirkman's DPPVI shortly. Sara, , 5 , just beginning > > Help!
