Guest guest
No, it was last summer. My youngest brother was the only person who offered. I've since been called in and admitted once as a backup recipient already. I didn't get it that time, but they tell me it should only be a matter of months now, not years. So, of course, I'm very positive about that. On the other hand, every day, you sit there hoping for that call, and every day it doesn't come, it's a little discouraging. Thanks for asking, Phyllis. The biggest hassle is always making sure my cellphone is charged up and able to receive calls. Pierre Re: Sore calfs/Kidney donor > Pierre, was this recently? I know you said that you had received a pill organizer that transplant would be in a few months. I just feel like you will get that kidney within the year. Prayers for you. Yes, disappointments come; now with my own IgAN, I can't donate a kidney for my husband. But I do hope that you receive that kidney soon. Guest guest
I hope you get that call soon Pierre. I imagine it would rather be like a kid waiting for Christmas --- with out the luxury of knowing when or if Christmas has been calendared. I cannot imagine trusting the call to a cell phone... I know I would be a nervous wreck - especially when I think of all the places along the Pacific coast that I love to go - where cell phone signals can't reach. Do you have a back up on your cell? Guest guest
Funny thing about this disease how you ponder what might eventually be? I am being positive and hoping my kidneys will last longer than my body ) But keep wondering what if I end up on dialysis and someone offers a kidney - I know it's so common but what happens if the person ends up with kidney trouble? Or the fact we're living longer means more old peeps are on dialysis ..... if someone gives me a kidney .... what happens to them 40 years from now? Hey, my glass is always half empty-ish ;o) Dave Re: Sore calfs/Kidney donor > Pierre, was this recently? Guest guest
Maybe they will have wracked up enough good karma that a kidney will come along relatively fast???? At the risk of sounded glib, what goes around, comes around? More seriously, I think about about the same thing in terms of being a kidney donor. I suspect most people do. Guest guest
Dave, When I got my kidney from a friend of mine, they told her if anything happens to her kidney that she will go to the top of the transplant list. Also, people are born with only one kidney and die at an old age with that thing pumping away. So their chance of losing the remaining kidney is very low. I do like the fact that these people who have been so good as to give us such a wonderful gift will be taken care of by the system if anything should happen to their remaining kidney. Guest guest
Hi Dave, I think they try really hard to screen out people as donors who have risk factors for kidney disease themselves. & amp;nbsp; For instance, if a potential donor has high blood pressure or diabetes, both of which put them at risk for renal disease, they would be disqualified. & amp;nbsp; In the unlikely event that a donor has renal failure later in life, they would have the same options in terms of dialysis or a transplant. & amp;nbsp; That would be horrible if that happened, but the reality is that since one kidney can sustain life, chances are if their one remaining kidney does fail, it most likely would have happened if they had one or two kidneys anyway. Guest guest
H , yeah I do understand all that - what made me ponder it was I came across a Board somewhere - can't remember which but it wasn't IGaN specific but there was a woman who donated to her husband and was now heading for dialysis and it really made me think - you know? I suppose if we're unlucky enough to need transplant but lucky to find a living donor then these are issues we have to discuss with them?!? Guest guest
Hi Yeah I know what you're saying but it would be something scary huh? I heard the other day of a guy I work with, his secretary's boyfriend went for tests to see if he was a suitable donor for his brother who is heading towards dialysis only to learn he has only 25% function - scary huh? and shows how benign kidney disease can seem until it is too late!?
