Guest guest
Hi everybody, Does anyone know whether sugar free chewing gum is allowed during the first 2 months postop? I guess I have finally gone into Ketosis, I have dragon breath! Gotta go to Tommy's Orthopeadic Surgeon with him this afternoon and DO NOT want to be embarrassed by the halitosis from hell! Thanks,
Guest guest
-- Chew to your heart's content. Any kind of gum. There's so little sugar, it won't make any difference. It's actually a great idea. Katy
Guest guest
, I had a piece of gum a few days ago and it didn't bother me with the exception of the taste. Things that I used to like don't look or smell good. I guess with the gum they don't taste good either. It was very odd. I don't think it's a problem. Just don't swallow it! Guest guest
, Hi! I read on another post group one time that we really shouldn't chew gum. It said if we accidentally swallowed the gum it would have to be surgically removed. I guess Dr. Rutledge should address this issue. It might have been a different WLS than the MGB that would have these results. Better safe then sorry. Guest guest
I don't know what Dr. R's thoughts would be about gum, but if you chew it post-op....be CAREFUL!!! I SWALLOWED my gum by accident the other day!! My eyes got as big as dollars! I was practicing for an Easter musical that our church was preparing and I used to swallow my gum all the time before I'd start to sing. Out of habit, down it went. I thought to myself...Oh My GOODNESS...What have I done!! I just hoped and prayed that it wouldn't get stuck somewhere along the way. And thankfully, it didn't. I never saw hide nor hair of it. But don't do what I did. You might not be so lucky. Maybe the Lord answered my prayer and worked a miracle since I was in church when it happened...you think?? Take care. Guest guest
Merritt, I know what you mean about swallowing gum before singing. I used to be in Sweet Adelines and did the same thing, all the time. I asked Dr. R. about the gum and he said " no gum please " so I guess I will carry a small bottle of mouth wash or binaca or something. Take care,

Guest guest
I thought ketosis was bad for you? Isn't that why diabetics sometimes have to check their ketones. What is the difference in that and the ketosis post-op?? Carolyn
Guest guest
Carolyn, I would like to know that too. I have always heard that ketosis is not good either. Kathy
