Guest guest Posted February 10, 1999 Report Share Posted February 10, 1999 Amy, The baby will nurse when she is hungry!! wouldn't stay awake for feeding and I NEVER woke him up to feed. For the first couple days he barely nursed at all and had several formula bottle (without my knowledge at first) b/c of his jandice and low blood sugar. My milk was fine! Some babies don't nurse or take a bottle at all foe the first 24-48 hours and when they start they are fine! I wouldn't rush the pumping. The nurses might not seem helpful but I am sure they know well. If she is that worried they should have a LC at the hospital, I know I did and you can ask him/her any questions. Anyway she is too sleepy she can't stay awake to nurse. We tried the wet washcloth taking off all her clothes, rubbing her feet everything!!! So I was thinking would it be a good idea for her to pump while her baby is getting over her sleepy state I asked the nurse but she was just like doesn't she wanna breastfeed and I said yes then she said why pump then? I am VERY worried about milk supply because I had such a bad start but she is leaking a little bit so maybe that's a good sign. If the baby doesn't eat should she pump what happens if she pumps and then the baby is hungry right after?? Ohh this is hard. I really think nurses in hospitals are NOOOOO help AT ALL!!!!! I thought MY hospital was bd but this one is WORSE!!!!!! I sware when I have my next baby I am pumping every 2 hours from my 7th month on. Well maybe not but I will surly take my little avent pump to the hospital with me and pump as soon as my next is born to make sure. Remember that the MILK won't come in for another day or so, she is only producing colostrum now so I don't really think she needs to pump but this is just my humble opinion!!! He would eat when hungry. I know this time I will do the same thing if she won't nurse exactly every 2 hours for 15 mins on each side. I think the worst is when they wake you BOTH up at night to nurse. Like leave me the heck alone. This time I am gonna try and see if she can " room in " b/c my son was jaundice he needed the lights and they usually gave him the formula bottle at night to get his janudice down and his sugar up so I was woke up less but not ready at all when we came home and there he was up all night! ~~Can't wait to have mine any day now hopefully!!! My Cody 10mob got real bad jaundice at home when he was a couple days old. Our insurance paid for us to have the portable bililights at home. I insist they let my babes room in. There is NO reason to have a healthy baby shoved into the nursery away fom mommy. I've heard nurses complain about the moms rooming with their babies. " That's the reason I became a nurse is to hold all those babies. " Well, if they want to hold a baby they should have their own. I didn't spend 9 months waiting for my baby to have it taken away from me!! We and our insurance are paying for the hospital to serve us. We're not there to serve them. I have a friend going to nursing school right now. She said they told her people don't know it but the hospital can't make you do anything. They are their to give us info, support us, do medical stuff. But we are in charge!!!! Did you know they can do everything in your room for a healthy delivery. Weighing, measuring, apgar. They wheel the stuff in then wheel it out. I make them keep my baby with me. If the babe ever HAS to go to the nursery. They wheel me in holding me babe. Sorry, I feel very strongly about this. S. Guest guest Posted February 11, 1999 Report Share Posted February 11, 1999 I worked in a NICU and you are right. You are a consumer in the hospital. You don't have to do anything you don't want to. Portable bili are definitely available. Make a stink. It isn't pleasant but the squeaky wheel gets the grease. They will do what you want if you are loud enough. They absolutely should not be giving formula without your consent. When I hear stories like this I am enraged. The hospital staff is there to support you although most often they don't act like that. Not that all hospital workers are bad not at all. It is just hard to work against a system as strong as that. Anyway I will stop now. But don't let them boss you around. You are your child's advocate in the hospital and sometimes that means fighting for what you need. Good luck! After a day or two he would scream if you held his foot. Poor baby! At the hospital I was in they asked your preference. I told them I would like to sleep, but wanted the baby on demand and NO bottles. They kept asking if I was sure. They even sent in the nursery nurse to ask if I understood on demand. She said if he cries every twenty minutes and the nurses can't sooth him, I get him..I said YEs I am his mother!!! I was the only mother there who wanted that, it is sad! I believe to get the bad hospitals to be customer oriented we have to sometimes make a " stink " !! But it's worth it so others don't have to work so hard. IE; young moms, 1st time moms, etc. S. I work in a hospital and, just like any other profession, some nurses have great knowledge about bfdg and others don't. I have heard that sectioned babies are more tired than vaginal delieveries...perhaps this is an issue. If so, it will work itself out in a matter of days. Good luck with your friend! He was handed to me the second he was born and I held him for a long time then he checked him and gave him a good rinsing off and did his feet and I got to wacth it all it was cool Thy said they had just staretd doing that about a motnh ago (doing all the checking in the room) It';s a great way to do it!!!! I chickened out and listened to the staff when they just took him for his circumcision. With my 2nd I realized I didn't want him to go thru that alone. I have been with 3 of my boys thru their circs. I rub their heads and talk to them. The drs always comment on how well my babies handle it with the parents comforting them thru it. Alot of the nurses grumble when they have to things out of the ordinary but they better do it with a smile on their face.
