Guest guest
What does OSSG stand for? What is a moderated list? What is digest and how does it affect the number of messages you recieve? Guest guest
OSSG- I may be wrong on this one with the first letter but I believe it is Olween's surgery support group- Olween being a woman that started the group. I very well might be wrong- but the list is for people that have had or are thinking about haveing weight loss surgery. moderated list is when a person or group of people see the posts before they hit the list and ok them. This is good to weed out spamers and scuh. They started becuase of a flame war- but we are finding that some people's msg's are being denied for other reasons. Moderation can be a great thing- I just think they are going a bit to far. BUT- regardless they are doing waht they feel is best for the group- and the list is wonderful for support and information. Digest version- is an option so that you get a bunch (in OSSG's list it is 25) of msg's in one email instead of a bunch through the day. That way I get 4 emails with 20-25 lsg's in each one. Just helps not to download hundresds of individual emails.... -- Bonnie mom to Josie and Marielle TCS Awareness Page http://www.mindspring.com/~borchert/tcs.htm Lipomylomeningocele Family Support Group http://www.mindspring.com/~borchert/index.htm ****** " Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Guest guest
Great explanataion Bonnie about OSSG! I think that the first O may stand for Obesity however (OBESITY SURGERY SUPORT GROUP) Either way, it is a very high volume group and is wonderful for people who need lots of support (like me!) Guest guest
Dear Bonnie, Pam Greer here. I had Lap. Gastric Bypass surgery on Jan.4, 1999. I know that you think some of us who have undergone the procedure this way under Dr. Rutledge are more than a little prejuidiced in our opinions about this as the best method. Weight loss so far 49 pounds and two dress sizes. I can understand that you and others might think we are exaggerating how easy the procedure is. We are loyal to Dr. R, but with good reason. Most of us have spent many months researching all types of procedures and medical treatments for our problem. We are generally well-read and well-informed patients who believe in active participation in our health care (You can imagine how that affects some GP's or other specialists)....Given that, we still do not follow blindly like tame sheep. If we seem overboard or overenthusiastic it's because we have experienced first hand and observed and discussed with other patients our success stories and significant lack of complications. My family practitioner has had 5 of his patients undergo some type of surgical treatment for obesity in the last 2 years. Two had an open procedure in Virginia, 1 had gastroplasty (stomach stapling), 1 had the Roux-En-Y (? sp.) and I had the Mini MGB. So far weight reduction has been about equal particularly with the three of us who have had our surgery in the last year. The differences come in to play regarding recuperative time, complications and extra hospital days. I myself went to 3 different surgeons who do surgical obesity treatment and after extensive reading, research and my appointments with them decided that the Lap procedure was the safest and least traumatic of all the procedures. Since Dr. R is the only surgeon I know of doing Lap procedures for MGB we can be a bit " rabid " in our defense of him and his procedure. However, you must realize that this loyalty is a result of the personal attention and care he gives every potential and post-op patient. If you call his office or e-mail him with a question you'll get an answer in less than 24 hours usually. He makes frequent rounds at the hospital, at all hours of the day and night and is just a phone call away even when you go home. We have seen the successes, we have talked with former patients and we are justifiably secure that Dr. R has covered all the bases. He insists on an informed patient, a long-term relationship with a local family Dr. and requires that we contact at least 10 other post-op patients before surgery. How many physicians (much less surgeons) have you known who were willing to go to such lengths to make patients aware of both the pros & cons of the surgery. I was also told by my insurance company (State Employees Blue Cross/Blue Shield that an open procedure would cost $25,000 (minimum) because of increased hospitalization time and potential complications. The Mini Gastric Bypass performed by Dr. R for me was $14,500 (hospital & surgeon fee) and $1,400 (anesthesia fees). That in itself is reason for opting for this procedure. Even if you have to factor in a motel stay for a week following surgery you're still coming out way ahead! If you haven't already, go to Dr. R's web site: Dr_Rutledge@... and read all the info. for yourself. Even if you decide on an open procedure there is a lot of good information that will apply equally to that choice. Please believe that we are so " fierce " in our support of Dr. R and his procedure that we want to share the news, but none of us are going to exaggerate the benefits or minimize the risks involved. If you call Dr. R's office and request a list of his patients (all of whom have agreed to talk with prospective patients) you can talk to everyone personally. Remember the old saying, " If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is? " Well, in this case that saying does not apply. If you factor in hospital stay, recuperative time, possible complications of wound infection etc. you'll see why we are so devoted. If you don't remember anything else about this note, remember this: While we may seem " overboard " to others who haven't had the surgery it's only because we know what dramatic differences it has made in our lives and we wish the same for everyone else. Dr R has now done more than 100 procedures and the results are astonishing, not only in relation to weight loss, but in lack of complications Good luck with whatever decision you make. We've all been where you are and would love nothing better than for you and anyone else considering obesity surgery to experience the success we have. Guest guest
Huh???? I never said Dr. R's patients were fierce- I never mentioned which ones I thought were fierce- but if you must know- it is on the other side of the country!!! There are known flame wars over people from a doctor in Calif and Ga saying things about other lap patients..... I AM one of Dr. R's patients- sched for surgery in 3 days! I would never, for one minute, have surgery with him if I didn't think he was THE best choice. Being a budding med student (crossing my fingers for next yr) and all ready deep in a medical field - I am overzealous in my research of medical procedure and of the surgeon that will perform it.... I have no idea why you wrote that to me- or what it was about........ I have been researching WLS for 6 months- Dr. R for 3 months...... I am well informed. I am really confused- I have said, many times, on this list that I am really excited and blessed to be here where he is so accessible- I would not chose an open- if the lap were not available- I would not be having this done (probably). I apologize if I offended anyone- I never meant to. Esp about another list that I never feel comfortable posting anyway. OSSG was a great list- and still is- if you can handle the mail and the moderation..... I must like it- I am still there. I may be over reacting due to stress about getting everything done before I have the surgery on tuesday- but so be it...... Anyone that would like to keep in touch- keep my email - I would LOVE to hear from you. Thanks to merritt and Jeanette who have been my support through this- Jeanette is such a great caring person. Thanks to Tina for offering to come by- I would still love to meet you. Ia m signing off the list- I know I am leaving on a bad note- I hope to keep in touch. Good luck to everyone and if anyone needs my help (with Healthsource or anything) just drop me a line. Good bye. -- Bonnie
