Guest guest
Dear group, For those that deliver this service, we are trying to work out how to bill insurance(s). Guest guest
Trevor, first be sure that hippotherapy is listed as covered or to say it better...be sure that hippotherapy is not an excluded benefit or uncovered treatment by the health care payer or plan before beginning treatment. Many payers are beginning to list hippotherapy and equine assisted therapy as uncovered. The American Hippotherapy Association is a good place to start for education, literature and membership opportunities with other therapists who use equine assisted therapy. From your post you did not designate the professional status of the person who needs you to do treatment. You can contact me directly if you want more help getting started or making a decision whether or not to enter this specialty. Guest guest
Please keep in mind the vast majority of insurance carriers do not knowingly reimburse for hippotherapy as many consider it investigational and experimental. The key word in the previous sentence is knowingly. Most likely, you will be reimbursed for your therapy services since most of your claims never get reviewed. The thing to think about is what would happen if some of your claims were reviewed and documentation showed you did hippotherapy? Would you get reimbursed if on a pre-pay audit or keep the money if on a post-pay audit? How would we bill for this service? We will be working with doctors plus private insurance and Medicaid. I currently work in a hospital based outpatient department and not sure how to do this on a private basis.
