Guest guest
One of the biggest nutrition problems my husband sees with patients is that they do not drink enough water. Yet when asked, nearly every one says, " I think so, probably not, I don't know...I'm not thirsty. " Americans drink all sorts of things but nothing is a substitute for water. If you drink water along with anything else, water is treated as a food for the digestive system. You must drink water alone in order for it to be properly used for the renal system (kidneys). A good plan for a healthy, non-nursing person is to take their body weight and divide it in half. That is the number of ounces you need per day of water to maintain health. A nursing mother, somebody sick, pregnant, overly stressed...needs more. The problem with drinking to thirst is this: The body is probably already into a water starvation mode. When the body isn't getting enough water than it assumes the reason is that there ins't enough. Since water is most important after air to survival, the brain would go crazy to have a constant thirst. So, the thirst mechanism either shuts off or greatly diminishes. When a person first starts drinking more water the body begins to turn on that thirst, more and more until it is fully functioning again. That is why a person who drinks water at first seems to be more thirsty than ever. Once balance is reached this isn't the case. When a person goes into a kitchen wanting " something " but not sure what it is...it is usually water. Blood sugar problems can also cause an over-abundance of thirst. There are days when you seem to want to drink water even when you couldn't hold another drop. That is a fluctuation in the blood sugar and should be only an occassional and rare thing. Otherwise it should be checked out. Cherie

Guest guest
Hi! im lucky to be home all day and I like to drink water. In fact I think Im addicted to it! LOL I drink from a large glass that holds between 28 and 30 oz of water. I usually drink atleast 3 if not 4 of these glasses. If you want some ideas of how much water you could be drinking, check out mermaids. They have 2 ways for figuring out water amounts. Here they are: Figuring Your Water GoalMETHOD A:Divide your weight by 16 (Example: Jane Doe weighs 285 pounds.Divided by 16= 17.8 or 17 glasses per day. We round down).METHOD B:Current weight minus goal weight, divided by 25, plus 8 glasses.(CW-GW/25) + 8. Example: Jane weighs 285, her goal is 160.Jane is 125 pounds overweight. 125/25=5. Jane should drink 5 glasses plus 8 for a total of 13 glasses per day.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- good luck with the water intake, I know its tuff to get it down sometimes! Guest guest
--Lois and Kaitlin, I was not always a water drinker until I joined TOPS about 5 years ago..Then after I quit TOPS the habit stayed with me to drink lots of water...and now that I am losing weight 32 pounds so far...I don't even find wrinkles on my face..which I had worried I'd find when losing the weight....and I'm 57 years old.......When I was in the car accident in March..because blood was found very heavy in my urine and they did not want my kidneys to shut down I was told by my doctor whatever water I was drinking drink more and then more than that...I told him I was drinking XXXX amount as it was..and he was pleased and we did double that amount for about 6 weeks....It flushed out what could have adhered to the kidneys and caused a shut down.... But, the city water here is horrible...I live 1/2 block from the river..and over the last 10 years the water at least to this house has increasing got worst...And no we are not at a table of land where the water backs up from flooding...it will do so above where we live and also below..but has never come our direction..In fact at one point three years ago it was fishy smelling and tasting for several months..The first I noticed it that way..it was Easter Sunday...had to go out for bottled water...I called the water company the next day..They offered a chemical that would clean out my brand new hot water tank of the rust and settlement in it...I told them its your city water..I'll be right down...I took a huge bottle of water to the water company. They agreed it smelled like fish..refused to take a swollow...THEN WHY SHOULD MY FAMILY !!!! From then on the water out of the tap has been mostly bleachy smelling and many times very strong. I share all this to say...maybe in various parts of the contry the water just doesn't taste good..and it certainly won't if you use a water softner.. Try some of the bottled waters on the market...In this area we can get Buffalo Don . Its out of Wisconsin. Its as wonderful as the well water my Dad had in New York state.. I do drink Ice Mountain ..its good but not my favorite... Are you worried about buying the water..if its for " me " only??? Don't.. I think we women don't pamper ourselves enough...we quite often accept second best... Also, places like WalMart do offer bottled different flavored waters. Their kind is not as expensive around 69 cents to 89 cents here.....You can get Clearly Canadian from Canada and to some at $1.00 to $1.50 can be expensive ......Oh, I think the WalMart is called Clearly American, ( Sam's Club )... And you can always use the Crystal Light powders...so many different flavors...so as not to get bored....no sugars and no calories....I quite often just sprinkle alittle of the powder in my glass instead of making up the entire 2 quarts...so I can fix a variety during the day... This is long but I hope it helps you and any others who have read....We need to help one another as much as possible...as we journey to our svelte slim selves. Guest guest
Sherrie, Thanks for the hints about water. Be careful of the flavored waters at Wal-Mart though. There is one kind that has no calories, but has aspartame in it. If anyone is watching that I wouldn't recommend it. It tastes good, but I don't like to have too much aspartame. I think you are right though we deserve bottled water. I like Dasani because it has minerals in it. I don't drink it exclusively though. Have a great weekend. in CO Re: Water --Lois and Kaitlin, I was not always a water drinker until I joined TOPS about 5 years ago..Then after I quit TOPS the habit stayed with me to drink lots of water...and now that I am losing weight 32 pounds so far...I don't even find wrinkles on my face..which I had worried I'd find when losing the weight....and I'm 57 years old.......When I was in the car accident in March..because blood was found very heavy in my urine and they did not want my kidneys to shut down I was told by my doctor whatever water I was drinking drink more and then more than that...I told him I was drinking XXXX amount as it was..and he was pleased and we did double that amount for about 6 weeks....It flushed out what could have adhered to the kidneys and caused a shut down....
