Guest guest
Hi Charlotte.I'll start with what we do now, and where we started from:This is our schedule now:1. Speech a.) 1 hour 1x week, 1:1, until he was "up to speed," speech wise, for his age. (private)b.) I then wanted him to start practicing conversations in a controlled setting w/ a peer. I picked a female friend his age, as she was very "chatty" Once he was up to five back and forth "volley's," I then..c.) I put him in TWO social skills groups: One group was through our county (all high functioning kids, with a ratio of 8:3, 2x per week, 2 hours each session, this group was "socially based." The other social skills group was our magic bullet (private): Four boys, one speech instructor, an OT, and 2 ABA's. This group is "academically based social skills (to get him ready for school, etc.,) This groups meets, 3x per week, for 3 hours a day, the total is 9 hours a week.2. OTa.) Floortime, one hour per week, for sensory needsb.) OT at his preschool, one hour a week for play skillsc.) Fine Motor at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, one hour, 1x a weekd.) Fine Motor at Bryn Mawr College during social skills class, one hour, 1x a week3. Schoola.) Typical preschool, 18 kids, 5 days a week, 3 hours each dayb.) ABA: 15 hours per week (at school), plus a 2 hour ABA consult (the county lets me pick where I need the consult..IE, at home, or school, etc., I use it for school, and use a private behaviorist for home..c.) The above mentioned social skills group, with four boys total is academically based.Extra:Swimming: 1/2 hour, 1x week.Biomed:Diet: GFCFSFCF, SCD.Supplements: DRN formula (compounded for SCD), CLO, Vit A, Calcium, Folic Acid, MB12 Shots. Epsom Salt baths every day for 20 mins. Body brushing 3x per day (for detox)Die off: Epsom salt (3 cups, instead of our usually two), Compunded Ibuprofen, Activated Charcoal. Lots and LOTS of water.7th Generation products for the house (cleaning, laundry, dishes, etc.,) I "cleaned up" our house (adding air purifiers, and reverse osmosis is our next step..)Organic food from Whole Foods, only. - Reading to him 20 mins 3x a day, when he's not in school. And, 2x per day when he is in school, as well as, double checking for comprehension, etc., We also practice 20 mins. of handwriting a day (usually while I'm making dinner, he'll sit at the table and practice writing, cutting, etc.,) -- At dinner, we talk about two things that we liked about their day, and one thing that we didn't like about our day. My husband and I also "model" conversation (extremely animated and on purpose, so that he understands emotion, etc.,) has a NT brother who is 18 mos. younger than him. I sent his brother, Ronan, to school, starting at 18 mos., 5 days a week, from 9AM-2PM. This was HUGE. Ronan would come home from being at school all day with play skills and language skills for to model. I also moved them into the same bedroom, so they were "forced" to have conversations with each other ----Sorry this post is all over the place... was a healthy baby with a 9, 9 apgar. & nbsp;He sat up at 5 mos. crawled at 6 mos. stood at 9 mos. got his MMR at 12 mos. started banging his head on the floor, and didn't walk until 14 mos., and became a picky eater. He was a milk junkie. He started looking at me from the corner of his eyes at 18 mos. And this is when his repetitive behaviors began. And all the while he was getting a flu shot every season (UGH!) At 2 1/2 he became very, VERY hyper. His hyperactivity was so bad, we could not go out of the house. Birthday parties and parks were out. When we had play dates at our house, he would just run from one side of the room to the other, and jump on the couch. But he would NEVER play with toys or kids. He was OBSESSED with cords, wires, hoses, washing machines, and toilets. NOT toys, or kids. He would elope from his preschool class. He started to echo just before his third birthday and began reversing his pronouns. --- This entire time I had his Pediatrician on speed dial. And every time I called her, she had the same response "He's fine. He'll grow out of it." At this time, I had TWO things to keep me going: The memory of him being "fine," before his MMR, etc., AND the fact that at 2 1/2 he potty trained himself in three days (and never had an accident since.) These two things kept me hopeful. The potty training thing was big for me, because I knew his cognition had to be intact. And even though he "wasn't getting everything else," he got the potty training down. Which is difficult, even for NT boys and girls. And at age 2 1/2, no less. This I though "Is good.'We finally went to a private Neurobehavioral Developmental Pediatrician, who diagnosed him w/ PDD-NOS.I started GFCF diet, CLO, Super Nu Thera and private behavior modification, private speech, and Floortime right away. I purchased every 'Teach to Talk" video and Dora (great for conversations w/ friends), online that I could find. But, he wouldn't sit to watch a video at home, so I strapped him in his carseat and drove around for 20 mins., so that he would have to watch the video. I now had a captive audience! And it worked!! We were also asked by his SLP, to stop asking him questions, and to start rephrasing the way we spoke to him...this really worked for us, too.... would never sit at the dinner table -- he would "run." So we started setting the timer and then would reward him w/ one M & M (hey, it worked!) for staying in his seat. We would set the timer, first for 2 min., then for 4 min., etc., until he was sitting, with us, for an entire meal. We also did this for "activity time" (arts & crafts, etc.,) And for getting him out of his crib and into a bed (when we first transitioned him from his crib to the bed, he would escape out of his room, etc.,)Once I realized that the little bit of biomed we were doing WAS working, I kicked it up a notch. I then started adding epsom salt baths and vit a. We began SCD got a DAN doctor, and started MB12 SHOTS (the shots were MAJOR for us. A total WOW right away.)At this time I also started to run. In the beginning, it was just a run/walk for 20 mins., then it developed into a half hour run without stopping. I then started signing up for races and really running. I am now up to running 11 miles without stopping. (I ran 8 1/2 miles this morning, just for fun!!) My point in telling you about the running , is this: I found that it cleared my head. And this too was really important for our family. Happy Mommy. Happy Child Especially, being a Mommy, and going through what we are all trying to do... it's good to clear the head.I did (do), my best thinking while running. It gives me clarity. Running really is the greatest metaphor for life. You get out of it what you put into it (Isn't that an Oprah quote?!?, anyway.. :)I hope this was a little helpful. P.S. I'll forward you some pics of from just last weekSubject: pandas and virusesTo: @...Date: Thursday, April 1, 2010, 3:44 AMHi,I read your post with great interest (Mb12 group), firstly I have seen through past posts that some kids can have Pandas and viruses at play. Pandas being a very difficult one to control. Rx meds have been most successful at dealing with Pandas BUT I have found a mom who used olive leaf extract exclusively for Pandas (high dose and for 2 years) and rid her kid of this.as my son is turning 3 (in next 2 months) and is still non-verbal. I am also looking into viruses, what bio-med treatments have you done in the last 2 years? have you chelated? I am very interested as your son (reading from your post) is doing very well. I always ask parents this when their kids are doing well..just checking the recipe for success!any info would be great!charlotte.
