Keep in mind that those charts were dawn up using formula fed babies and they gain weight very differently than breastfed babies. Breastfed babies tend to slow down dramatically in weight gain in the second half of the first year. And the charts don't take into account body type, etc. Are you or your dh smaller folks or do you come from smaller 'stock' (for lack of a better word)? Do you guys tend to be petite or thin? Be on the safe side, and do test for anemia, but don't freak out! And don't forget that she is burning off those calories much faster now that she is mobile. Don't push the dairy, it can lower immune system response (and constipate) but do provide a variety of nutritious foods and step up the nursing. It is the perfect food, and is designed to sustain your baby. Lastly, have a peek at a breastfed baby weight chart and see how she measures up that way. They can be found on the web but unfortunately I can't find my * & ^! link. Hope this helps! Amy O. Guest guest
<< She went from >being in 85 %tile to 25%tile. >> This was my daughter too, and it happened over about a 6 month period. She started out in the 90th percentile (almost 9# at birth), and now she's in the 25th. My formula-fed son was the same way. It's good to keep an eye on her growth, but try not to obsess over it. Running some tests is a good idea, but I suspect they really won't turn up anything. This is probably just her body type! Especially if you and dh were skinny as kids (me and dh both were ... now is another story entirely LOL!). Good luck and keep us posted!!! & Kylie, still nursing at 18 months! Guest guest
I had the same thing happen except only put on 8 ounces in one month. also walks and crawls all day long... no sitting and looking pretty. she is all action... no talk (yet :0)) good luck but if you are nursing 4-5 x's per day I think she is getting lots of fluids.... if she were anemic ... I would believe she might be a bit tired most of the time. Like my little one (who I am planning on getting tested for anemia). Good luck Carol. And I don't really think you starve your kid! Guest guest
Carol, DON'T PANIC! It could be that was just meant to be small and it was the first 6 months that was unusual for her... Doctors are soooo weight-oriented. Has she got taller? It could be also she's been growing up rather than out. I would just make sure she eats good nutritious foods for her solid meals - vegetables, fruits, meat and fish, some dairy (I wouldn't introduce loads if you havent given her hardly any before though...) - and nurses plenty. Guest guest
It's normal for bf babies to significantly slow their weight gain after 6 mos. If she is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry about it. And if the dr persists in insisting that she gain more weight, I would find another ped. The growth chart your ped is looking at was not designed for bf babies. Looneytnzs@... wrote: > From: Looneytnzs@... > > Oh my gosh I am so mad at myself! Guest guest
Carol, I DO NOT beleive you starve . That's ridiculous!! I can tell just from your posts how much you love her. Some babies just do that! our 2yob. Was average on his curve until he was 1 yr. Then he was like the 5th percentile. I was bfing + he was eating our food. Our Dr., whom we love, was not worried at all. When we went to a WIC appt. They freaked, sent us to their nutritionist, whom we disliked. She told us nothing that we didn't already know. They upset us so badly. Like we were starving him. We called our Dr. He had just seen like the week before. He said " is FINE. " Some kids just do that. We still worried. But, now he's a brick!!!! Weighs about 30lbs! I can hardly pick him up. I bet is a healthy little girl. She's fine. It'll take some time then she'll grow. Take care, S. Mom to 5. Guest guest
The old traditional averages were as follows: birth: 7 pounds 3 months: 12 pounds 9 months: 18 pounds Year: 21 pounds. Look on any clothing that says weight ranges. Most mothers know what weight ranges of clothes correspond to which month size ranges. Triple birth weight by 1 year. That has to do with a baby 7 pounds. Babies smaller or larger just don't fit that magic scale. The problem is for mothers with their first baby. They are prone to hassel by doctors because they have nothing to compare. Anybody try to compare my baby with the average has to contend with the history of my other 8 healthy children who grew in the same pattern. My husband and I do not believe in 'well baby care' by peds. We first use chiropractors (what a surprize since that is Neil) we second use family practitioners and then if he feels uncomfortable about something we have an automatic second referral as they referr to a specialist. We read and met with Dr. Mendolshon....gee....does anybody know who he is anymore? What an eye opener! Well...we have had the most wonderful doctors by staying with FPs and with those they refer us to. This is important to us because our first son's death was in a large part due to doctor's idiocy, it woke us up fast! Guest guest
<< And wants to see her back in 6 weeks for a lab test. To check to see if she is anemic. She seems so happy and everything I can't believe I was starving her..>> Having been in the medical field for 11 years I can tell you that if they thought you were starving her they would do the lab test now and admit her to the hospital for testing. A 19lb 6 month old is nice and plump, a 20 lb 1 year old is petite. Did her height and head circumference grow? I found with my daughter that when she started becoming mobile she dropped significantly in the curve. Really, if they thought she was anemic they wouldn't give you 6 weeks they would do a CBC to see what her hemoglobin and hematocrit are at. ~~(US)
Guest guest
is 15 months and still not quiet 20 lbs. He is pretty tall though I am not quite sure on numbers. He eats like a little piggie. He is also VERY active. The kid never sits still. He can still wear some 6-9 month clothes, He ususally wears 9-12 month clothes. All his 18 months clothes fall off him!! My best friend's one year old is about 25 lbs and wearing a 18 month to 2T. She always call my kid anerexic (sp). I think alot of it has to do with how the parents were. I was about 20 lbs at a year and so was dh. And we both remained light til teen-age years. My Dr has already >accussed me of starving him when he was little. > My first went to formula at 2 mo due to latch probs and another pregnancy. She was 7-1\2 lb at birth. At 1 yr she was 15 lbs! She did not hit 20 lbs until about a week before she turned 2. I was not accused of starving her because I could document and prove how much she was eating...however, I am sure if she had been breastfeeding the whole time I would have been. Kids just grow at different paces. They are genetically geared towards certain eating habits and sizes if you allow them the freedom to follow these antural trends, they will be the size they were made to be. Kiva grew really fast the first few months, now seems to be slowing down significantly. I may be coming to you soon telling you I am being told I am starving my baby!!
