Great Plains lab does take some insurance. I would recommend the OAT (organic acids) and CDSA (comprehensive digestive stool analysis. Your regular pediatrician or DAN doc can run a viral panel thru any major lab to see if your child has high titers to measles, mumps, rubella, HHV6, ASO & DNASE (strep), CMV EBV. They can also check vitamin D levels which are often low in our kids.

Hello all! I'm needing some advice on what route to take with testing. What lab did you use and recommend?I'm looking at the tests available for ASD and don't know what to begin with. We finally have some money to throw at this, but sadly not enough to get everything done at once. What 3 tests are a good starting point?Thank you!

I'm calling my insurance to find out what they will cover. Good to know we have a place to start!

My daughter has an appointment this week with the Ped and will specifically ask to have her titers checked. Her last blood draw a year ago revealed abnormally low D levels. We've been supplementing and will have that rechecked to see if levels have risen.

Which metals test seems to be more accurate? Fecal or hair?

The only metals test that is accurate and shows what is in the body is from a French Lab. It is called a urinary porphyrins profile. It requires a first morning urine sample. You do not need a doctor, you can order it on your own. The lab is called Laboratoire e in Auguste, France.

You can send an email to contact@... and request a urinary porphyrins profile test kit sent to your home address

They will send you a kit for free. When you send it back w/ your urine sample. You can give them your credit card info. It used to cost about $80 euros which is about $120 maybe less now that the euro is down.

Thank you ! You have been so incredibly helpful.

One last question...for now. Any other vitamin levels I should have tested at the Ped office?

And if you are pulling through local lab anyway, I would also pull IgG, IgA and subclasses, Vit A, Thyroid panel, and T & B lymph + NK cells. Also check cortisol levels. All covered by insurance. You can get *a lot* of info thru local labs. If GPL or DDI don't take your insurance, I would still get as much as you can from your local lab because it will help *a lot*. I actually find them to be more helpful overall than the GPL or DDI tests. Don't get me wrong, I still get them once a year but I pull local lab stuff every few months.

Good to know and thank you! I'm taking all of this down to take to the pediatrician. What is DDI?

I'm so confused about insurance right now. I called Aetna and our plan covers the OAT and Comprehensive Stool, but only at an in-network lab. Of course Great Plains is out of network. Two of the in-network labs are Clinical Pathology and Quest.

I called Clinical Pathology and they do carry the OAT testing kit, but she mentioned it was a blood draw. Isn't the OAT a urine sample? When I mentioned the Comprehensive Stool, she quickly said they don't do that test. I mentioned that I called insurance and gave them the CPT codes and they DO cover (if deemed medically necessary), but only at an in-network lab. She proceeded to say they do the stool samples if ordered separately.

Does anyone have experience with either of these labs? I'm more than willing to suck it up and pay for the tests out of pocket through GPL, but would first like to see if insurance will cover anything.

DDI is Doctor's Data (www.doctorsdata.com). Try calling DDI and see if they are in network with Aetna. I have a friend that had Aetna and testing was covered, but that could just be the difference in plans - although I remember them billing directly so it's possible they are in network. That was a couple years ago, though. It may have changed - always worth asking. But DDI is essentially the same as GPL as they sub out to each other. But my bigger concern is that you need a very open pediatrician. A good way to know if they are open is if they allow you to refuse vaccines. Otherwise you may be taking all this info in there for naught and walk out feeling like a heel if they treat you poorly over it.Different labs do different tests and have their own methods. The main question here is can a blood OAT tell you the same thing as a urine OAT? I don't know the answer to that. For all I know, a blood OAT may be even better but I have no clue.

Calling DDI to find out if they are in network. Hopefully that's the case.

My husband and I have been devising our Ped strategy to get what we can testing wise. Our Ped knows we don't vaccinate and our reasons why. Our 18 month old sees her as well, and while she doesn't like that we choose not to vaccinate the kids, she also doesn't give us grief about it. She also gives us the side eye and thinks we're a little whack about our Autism beliefs. Her medicine is "conservative" she says. :D

I made the appointment based on our daughter's bowel issues. We are concerned about malabsorption and her weight being so low. I doubt the doctor will let us tell her what tests to run, but we are going to give her our list of concerns and hope that she will offer up some tests on her own. Our plan is to get what we can from the Ped appointment and then hit a Naturopath clinic my husband found. They definitely don't take insurance so we are waiting until we have exhausted the other efforts.

I kniow a few years ago some people tried doing urinary porphyrin test from other lab and got false negative results. At that time it was believed by most DAN docs that only the French lab was accurate. I am not sure if Great Plains has caught up w/ the French lab yet or not. Personally, since the French Lab only charges $120 I would use them. They email the results to you in about 2 weeks or so.
