Guest guest
I wish I could tell you that there are reliable signs, Jul, but it's just not so. There are a group of symptoms called " uremic symptoms " that people have when they are approaching what we call end-stage renal disease. I've listed these in the Renal Failure Notebook section of the website (www.igan.ca). But you can't count on having any, as many people truly have no signs that they have reached the point of starting dialysis, except their bloodwork. Some of the symptoms you describe you could have even if you had no loss of kidney function at all. They could be caused just by having heavy proteinuria. So you see, it's hard to say. My feeling is that the only reliable sign is in the bloodwork. Pierre How do we know? > Hi again, , I will keep you in my prayers. Like everyone else has said, you are truly and inspiration to us. > Pierre, or anyone who can answer this. How do you reallly know when you're going down hill? I am truely feeling so terrible. For 3 days now have woke up with swelling in the face so bad that my eyes are almost swollen shut, swelling in the ankles, hands, and headache. Very fatigued. No, I haven't changed my diet, have'nt had a fever, but very nauseated. I know it sounds wierd, but I even feel I have swelling in the abdemen. I am so tired of bothering my doctor and so afraid she's going to get tired of me, that I'm trying to just feel better so I don't have to call her. I was sent home from work on Monday, and they wanted to send me home on Tuesday, but could'nt because I have no fever. What are the signs of failure? I don't want to jump the gun. It's funny that I can give all of the advice to others, but can't take it for myself. Will someone just tell me the signs? Gosh, I really hate complaining to you guys. Gotta go for now Jul

Guest guest
Hey Jul, You really do need to call your Nephrologist. They need to run lab tests to see what is going wrong. If you are having headaches, nausea and that much swelling, it definitely warrants a trip to the doctor. Please let us know how you are doing. I am so concerned about you.
