PT vs OT supervision

I know this topic has been previously discussed but I cannot access those posts.

For plans of care that may be devloped by either a PT or OT, e.g. lymphedema,

hand therapy, work rehab, etc., my understanding is that only PT/PTA staff can

carry out a PT plan of care, and same for OT. Other than a PT supervising an OT

in application of modalities for which the OT received special

training/certification, I'm aware of no other situations where it's allowable

for an OT or OT Assistant to carry out a PT plan of care under the supervision

of a PT, or for PT or PT Assistant to carry out an OT plan of care under the

supervision of an OT, regardless of overlaps in training/competencies of the PT

and OT (and assistants).

Just looking for confirmation of this, and any references. I practice in

Illinois and have reviewd the practice act - though not specifically prohibited,

cross-discipline supervision/practice is not included in scope of practice.

I imagine Medicare would neither allow billing for any PT services under OT plan

of care and vice versa.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hi, Leonard --

Thanks for your post on this topic. We all need to learn to recite: " PT and

OT are separate and distinct professions. "

Just as Neurosurgery is different from Podiatry, we are separate

professions.

Thanks, Dick. I did receive some feedback from a non-therapist supervisor of a

lymphedema program that they DO allow cross-discipline treatment of lymphedema

treatments (both PT and OT share treatment of patient under one plan of care).

Rationale was that this is a " certified " competency, so allowable for both

therapists to act interchangeably. Again, I'm not aware of practice act

excepting this situation, but am interested in other's perspective.
