Question about fiber

Hi,You mentioned fiber. I'm really confused because our DAN told me recently that she stays away from fiber supps b/c they can make the bowel lazy. Is this possible? I've been told my whole life to eat more fiber. That said, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what's going on with our daughter. My 3 year old (PDD NOS) is a bit of a mystery to us right now. She was never that constipated. She would go 2 or 3 days sometimes but never struggled to go when it happened. We recently put her on fiber, fish oil, digestive enzymes, and a multi vit/min. At our first appt with the DAN about a month ago, she said to take her off of all supps (including fiber, enzymes, etc) for now so when she does her eval/bloodwork, she can get a good baseline. So we did, and ever since, she has been so severely constipated that it has been torture to watch. She is in pain all the time. We gave her miralax (which I now know is not good). It worked at first but eventually stopped working. I went against the DAN's advice and re-started the enzymes, and she has been pretty good so far, but still has a few episodes. We go back to the DAN tonight so I'm hoping she will address this, but we just want to know what happened to cause this problem when she never had it in the first place. Is it possible that having her on those supps (including the fiber) could have made her bowel lazy in that short amount of time? She was only on the supps for 2 weeks. It's just so frustrating. I feel like we totally screwed up her little system. I know all the options out there to treat constipation, and I'm sure the DAN will let us know what to give her from here. I'm just wondering if any of you can tell me why she developed this issue after the supps, when she never had the issue to begin with. To echo what Cheryl wrote. We too, used Allatess - and I personally, would do the full panel. IGg. It's a blood test. I wouldn't bother with the diet suggestion (written by a nutritionist) find a good nutritionist. (or get a good book). I think we paid $200 for the full, and $95 for the half. I wish I had done the full on my son. We are actually thinking about just doing it again. I personally think GF/CF is the way to start, wheat and gluten and dairy just are problematic. I would also do corn and soy free too. With all the GMO's with corn and soy, it's like rain in a boat with a hole. When you are trying to detox, it's best just to keep it really simple. Get a stool sample done. We used Doctor's Data Comprehensive stool test. I think it's around $300. Gives great insight as to what flora is in the intestines and what isn't. Along with bad gunk that might be stopping up the pipes. Sounds like 'sludge'. When that happened to us, we put my son (and my brother) on a fiber program. We used Oxypowder (stuff is AWESOME!) and I also use a combination of apple pectin, psyllium husks, and other bulking type stuff to deal with it. That is where we started, and it's a place to start. When you get the diet right, it seems like everything starts falling into place, and this journey will show you which test to take next. laura> To: mb12 valtrex > Date: Sat, 23 Oct 2010 15:35:27 -0700> Subject: Re: Questions on food allergy testing plus an odd bowel movement> > > > > > I have two questions that I'm hoping the experts here can help with. > > > > We saw an Allergist who had no clue about food allergy testing for Autistic kids. Alletess has one for something like $85 for 95 foods. You can do IgE, which would be more typical of an allergist but the real problems lay in sensitivities. Would also recommend you do a celiac panel since you have a willing allergist. You can order the kit online.> > > > > Now, what type of testing gives results? My daughter had a bowel movement the other day that stuck to the side of the toilet. Not to be gross, but it was a HUGE glob that my husband had to repeatedly pour hot water over to get it down. He told me that it was a very fatty stool, and as each layer peeled back he could see pieces of undigested food. I've asked her to get me each time after she's had a bowel movement and so far they seem fairly normal. > > > > Now, the smell was absolutely mind blowing and stuck around for a good hour after it was flushed. The best way I know to describe it was like "old people breath", or mothballs maybe. So what is this? Malabsorption, candida, parasites? Obviously we need to do some stool testing to figure it out, but I'm wondering if this sounded familiar to anyone. > > A lot of this will be helped by getting the IgG testing as this is a major area where leaky gut tends to come from but a CSA would be good to have.> > Cheryl> > > > > Thank you for any advice or input!> > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------> >
