It's not how many medics you have, it's whether or not the ones you do have

possess the education and desire to perform what they were taught to do. You

will see laziness and incompetence everywhere, not just big city fire

departments. It's just easier to get away with laziness in the city because of

quicker

transport times. Compare and contrast San EMS's protocols to those of

say Canyon Lake EMS or Kendall County EMS.

Just to add my two cents in. I have worked for both type agencies..FD and

private and seen both big city work and work of Medics in rural setting.

One of the factors that determine standard of care is the Medical Director

that you are working for. Smaller departments get the benefit of knowing

there MD one on one. From what I have seen that translates into better and

more aggressive protocols that all of us Medics love to work under. The big

cities don't get that type of one on one time and as a result are limited in

what they can do in the field.

I am sure every Medic out there want to do the best patient care possible,

if they didn't they wouldn't have subjected themselves to the training and

24hr shifts. You are going to find good and bad Medics everywhere you go

and I don't think it is a matter of Rural vs City
