Guest guest
Hello : Wow, 65 years is great, hopefully the rest of us will be able to keep up! I started a new message because for some reason I was unable to reply to yours; I'll have to check that out a bit later, when I'm more awake. And besides, it was a good opportunity to change the subject. Recently my A1C levels have been a bit elevated; last October it was 6.5; January 6.5 April 6.7 and the last one in June was 6.4. Prior to these it was running at about 6.1 - 6.2. I'm expecting my next one to be lower. In Jan the Doc sent me to a diabetes clinic, hoping that they could make sense out of why the insulin was having such varying results from day to day. In April I stopped going, otherwise I think the A1C would have kept going up. Just this past weekend I switched insulin regimes, going from using a Humalog Mix 75/25, to a combination of Levemir and Novo-rapid. Its only been 6 days so I'm still working things out and adjusting. Time will tell how this works out! Terry
Guest guest
Hi Terry, and others, I'm using Humalog, but my insurance coverage isn't very good. I pay $70 for a pack of 5 pens. How different are you finding the Novo-rapid? I'm pretty sure Nova-rapid (or something similar) is covered in my insurance. Guest guest
Hi terry, Its good you changed insulin. You can overall get much better control using 2 insulins-once you get the regime down! Good luck. A1C Hello : Wow, 65 years is great, hopefully the rest of us will be able to keep up! Guest guest
I am very impressed you can get an A1c as low as 6.1 to 6.2 on a premixed insulin! Wow! Did you go low a lot on that regimen? Jen
Guest guest
Hello Jen: Yes, there were lots of lows ( less than 4.0 or 72), and that's one of the main reasons for changing insulin. Frequent testing sometimes caught it early, but not always. Generally though I always knew when I dipped below 4.0 / 72. Guest guest
The diabetic is urged to run near normal A1C levels and this means normal as measured by non-diabetics. In other words a person who is not diabetic. A normal A1C varies betwween 4.2 and 5.2, which is a long away from a 6.5. the growling diabetic Ok so I just tried 3 times to check my sugar and couldn't get enough blood. I'm so sick of doing this! If they're good (at least 6.0 or lower), perhaps you don't need to check. The fact of the matter is though, most diabetics will need to do a blood sugar check at some regular interval to make sure things are okay. The A1C is done usually as frequently as every 3 months, and if for some reason it jumps, well, that's not good. Doing home checks may catch a problem, even if you're doing fine now. Is your blood thin perhaps. I know, sometimes, I have plenty of blood, but it didn't bead, but ran. It's next to impossible to get a good reading if you don't have a bead of blood. The more you perform blood sugar checks, the more you'll find you can master the technique of getting decent blood samples. Hang in there! Guest guest
Hello, I agree that diabetics should be urged to shoot for non-diabetic levels, but other than Bernstein, I don't think its happening. Many doctors are happy if you're under 7.0, and some are happy if you're under 6.5, but 4.2 to 5.2 isn't even a consideration for most doctors. I'm hoping to get there, but I've some work to do yet. Guest guest
it has been so long since i had a 5.2 that i am sure that i don't remember what it is like. my doctor is happy if i maintain around or under6.5 she says that actual damage begins around five point five but that the minimum damage is done around six point five. it also changes some since i have had a transplant because some of the meds. are a real kick in the teeth trying to maintain a six or below. i ndfact i find it almost impossible. just my two cents worth i know it isn't much.j david
Guest guest
Obtaining a 2 hour post pranial reading of 120 or less all the time, for type 1 insulin dependent diabetics, is something next to impossible. Dr. Bernstein fans will say it is possible, but that program is unrealistic for most. And the merits are also not necessarily proven. Guest guest
For type 1 insulin dependent diabetics, I'm of the opinion that 6.0 or slightly less is quite acceptable. Guest guest
I agree ... if I aimed for that low at two hours I would be low within the next hour or two, guaranteed. I also do not know any type 1s who have an A1c of 5.2, much less 4.2, who do not also have problems with very frequent and/or severe hypoglycemia. Also, I for one have found that glycemic index seems to affect my blood sugars far more than carbs do, and also stress and hormones and activity level have a very large impact. So I do not think Bernstein is the be all and end all of diabetes management as he simply focuses on one aspect (food) while ignoring everything else, and everything needs to be considered in a good diabetes regimen. Guest guest
Amen . I once had an A1C of 5.5 and spent most the previous 3 months treating low BG's. I also started having diabetic unawareness. As soon as I let the BG's get higher, I felt better and had fewer hypoglycemic reactions.
