Guest guest
My son has been taking Valtrex on and off for a year. He does not have a diagnosed virus but is taking it just for anti-inflamitory purposes. The first week of a 30 day supply of valtrex, he was showing significant gains in age appropriate conversation language and then the last three weeks would go back to his baseline. We would take him off, and then the same thing would occur. This happened for about 5 cycles and then nothing/ no improvment on the last round. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Hi there! Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. We experience the same thing with our 3yo on MB12. Have you had a similar experience on other anti-inflammatory drugs? Maybe if people could speak to causes of inconsistent gains in general, we can find a common thread. > > My son has been taking Valtrex on and off for a year. Guest guest
You can't take antivirals on and off. This is incredibly irresponsible of any doctor to do, especially for a year. 5 30 day cycles is just crazy. To not take an antiviral consistently will lead to viral mutation. It then becomes resistant to that antiviral. An antiviral has no anti-inflammatory qualities, to my knowledge. I had to google it to make sure after your post because I had never heard of it. The only time I've seen it listed by anyone as an anti-inflammatory is mail in pharmacies trying to sell it without an Rx. I went back and read the package insert and pretty much checked everywhere I could think of and it's not mentioned anywhere as actually having any anti-inflammatory qualities. The gains and losses you are seeing are probably because of the incorrect use. If you saw gains at all with it then it's likely it's trying to treat a viral issue but not getting very far. And I'm guessing by now that there is resistance and you should change antivirals. Zovirax or Famvir. Famvir can be dose 3x a day but Zovirax needs to be dose 5x a day. And seriously, I would not go back to your current doc for these as Rxing it is clearly not his forte. I'm seriously floored by this. Valtrex is not an anti-inflammatory and it's just like antibiotics, use it improperly and it won't work for long.
