Guest guest
Hi Dave, Good news on the referral to the Nephrologist. I am glad you will be able to see her. On my insurance, I am still trying to work on it through my Human Resources department. We'll see what happens. Thanks for asking!
Guest guest
Hello Dave, Are you actually going to see a neph? The people I'm seeing are consultants in the General Surgery department (no complaints so far). I think it has been mentioned that there aren't too many nephrologists in the UK. Anyway, good luck. I too have significant protein leakage. When I was told it was 5g/day I was actually quietly proud (not completely sure why, so there you go...) However the consultant soon deflated my ego when he said the worst they'd seen was 20g/day. Yikes! How are your feet and ankles? Any swelling? (Sorry, if you've mentioned it before but I'm new here). Best wishes, Adam " East Berkshire " , UK > Hi all > > Sorry but I gave up catching up - I'm so tired at the moment and work > is mad so concentration levels aren't good at the moment .... where's > that pillow!?! > > Well interestingly, I have an appointment with my GP on Wed and I was > all set to demand my referral etc and lo' and behold I get a letter > today saying that he'd heard from the neph and " my protein leakage > was significant " and it was best I was referred to her. Guest guest
Hi Adam, As far as I know, in UK all Nephs are General Physicians (spelling?) although there are many sub-specialities like cardiologists, nephrologist, etc - certainly the person I am seeing is a Neph but is based in the Dept of General Medicine! Guest guest
How infuriating! On both fronts! How soon does it take to get a neph appointment in your part of the world? I would be pulling out my hair. I'm sorry you have to find someone new as well. That always hurts. Somehow the whole business of starting all over with someone is a bear. We lost our pediatrician to retirement and I still haven't found anybody new for . I dread the day we lose our pediatric neph (she's at Stanford for a 3-4 year period so that's not a worry for a year and a half)! Guest guest
Thanks Cy Average wait here is 7 weeks - we aren't quite as lucky as the US in the way we are allocated a Doctor - generally speaking you take what you get although it's not quite that simple - we'll see what happens - I should see her before she leaves then I will see what happens with regards her replacement - there are 2 nephs in Highlands one is on maternity leave and the other is the one who is leaving - thing is, one who is leaving is a young and very promising doctor - well thought of by all so I might just get my GP to follow her if things don't go well - I'll bend his arm for an out of area referral! Guest guest
In many places here, the lack of nephs causes very long waits. Nephrology isn't exactly a hot specialty. There's aren't many procedures (other than biopsies) that docs can charge for, so it's not one of the more lucrative specialities. Since there's not much incentive, the docs who are in the field tend to be very overworked (and there are long waits to get their time). Pediatric nephs are even a scarcer breed. I just learned that there is not a single pediatric neph in Montana! Guest guest
I remember that when my son was seen by the nephrologists at The Children¹s Hospital of Denver, many of the patients came from quite a distance in the Rocky Mountain region. We could never get late afternoon appointments because they saved them for those who had to drive a long distance. At least in the U.S., teaching hospitals seem to have a more regional focus and try to accommodate people who live far away. Betsy > In many places here, the lack of nephs causes very long waits. Guest guest
Adam, further update re protien, significant is obviously relative as it turns out it's only 0.4g or at least that's what it was at 24hr test although I'm fairly sure that it's increased as my loo looks like I've squirted some fairly liquid in it these days and it certainly wasn't that bad before! So none of the problems you've encountered thankfully! Guest guest
Hi Cy Current suggestions are it should take about a month here I think maybe a few weeks longer - the waiting is the price we pay for free at point of use Healthcare! I think the thing that worries me a little is that in all likelyhood what we'll get is two newly promoted consultant neph's so there will lack the usual person being led by someone experienced! Guest guest
Hmmmm are you seeing Dr Poppins? The site was helpful thanks, unfortunately living in the far north, there's not much choice but to go with what we get or twist your GPs arm firlmy up his back as he writes a referral to somewhere which usually means at least 3hours driving each way! :o/ Dave > > > > > Hi all > > > > > > Sorry but I gave up catching up - I'm so tired at the moment and work > > > is mad so concentration levels aren't good at the moment .... where's > > > that pillow!?! > > > > > > Well interestingly, I have an appointment with my GP on Wed and I was > > > all set to demand my referral etc and lo' and behold I get a letter > > > today saying that he'd heard from the neph and " my protein leakage > > > was significant " and it was best I was referred to her. Guest guest
Hi again Cy, I'm losing the plot - I see I've replied to the same post twice although I did give a more uptodate waiting time lol Thankfully, in the UK the number of chargable procedures isn't really an issue seeing as the majority of hospital doctors are salaried! Dave > In many places here, the lack of nephs causes very long waits. Nephrology > isn't exactly a hot specialty. There's aren't many procedures (other than > biopsies) that docs can charge for, so it's not one of the more lucrative > specialities.
