If I'm not mistaken, at one time there were EMT-Bs with " Special

Skills. " I think those special skills were integrated into the EMT-

Intermediate curriculum.

Okay, let me show my age a bit. When I started in EMS there was

a " Special Skills " designation. I have uploaded a .jpg of the patch.

In an effort to standardize the EMS system with the rest of the

country, Texas changed it to Intermediate in the early 80's

Special Skills patch? Ha. Ask these Texas " dinos " about the IV

Therapy/Airway Management rockers that long preceeded the Special Skills

patch. Still got a few though I hesitate to admit it. We were so

" special " in those days.

anyhow, I stopped at half price books today and was browsing their medical

section and I saw the 1987 version of the textbook I used in my class,

EMERGENCY! Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, 8th ed. by the

AAOS. There was a chapter on starting IVs.

My question is, at time in the past, were EMT-Bs able to start IVs, as a

SOP?

anyway, I ended up picking up a book called A Paramedic's Stories RESCUE 471

by Canning. Have any of you read or heard of it?
