Guest guest
Hello H, Let me start by extending a very warm welcome to the site. Congratulations on your recent marriage. You certainly have started off with additional stresses in experiencing kidney failure. I am so sorry you are having to cope with all this while at the same time being a newlywed. My heart goes out to you. I think it is terrible that you went from Feb until this summer to be diagnosed with kidney failure. You must have been feeling very terrible. It seems very irresponsible of your first doctor to not even order any basic blood tests. Have you informed that doctor that you in fact did have kidney failure? Perhaps knowing will keep that doctor from making a similar mistake with another patient in the future. I don't have any answers for you on the hair loss, but still wanted to welcome you on board. Guest guest
I am not sure what Prilosec is. I have taken: Hydralazine; Phoslo; Prednisone; Norvasc; Labetalol; and Lisinopril. I was eating Tums but then switched to Phoslo and that's when the hair started falling out. My Neph said that Phoslo wouldn't do that. My Neph stopped the Labetalol and switched me to Lisinopril. Could it have been the Lebetalol....but I stopped taking it a month ago and the hair is still falling out. Someone said that perhaps it's my magnesium intake. Not too sure on that...I'm still waiting for my blood test on that one. Thanks.

Guest guest
Are you taking Prilosec by any chance? Walt _____ From: hanskell6 Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2004 11:42 AM To: iga-nephropathy Subject: IGA Hair Loss...(new to the site)? Hi, I'm new to the site. I have never posted before. I was diagnosed with IGA in July 03. I was never sick before...but I became very tired/sick around Feb 03. My doctor thought I had allergies and stress (due to wedding preparations...got married in June 03). I believed her. I kept taking the medicine that she prescibed...and kept feeling worse. She never did a simple blood test. Not until after the honeymoon (and at my husband's strong suggestion) did I change doctors. My new doctor did a blood test and realized I had Kidney failure. Long story short...I have 0% of my kidney function left, I'm on dialysis and am waiting for a transplant (hopefully in March). Like everyone else, I am dealing with this and all the pain as it comes. Lately I have been losing my hair and this scares me to death. Of all that I have been through it is kinda silly that I'm so worried about losing my hair. So I am sorry if I sound vain. I'm nervous because no one can tell me why. My Neph doctor and my primary have run several tests to no avail. Does anyone else have this problem? Am I one off or is this common? Could dialysis be doing this? Could it be my diet? My potassium, phosphorous, protein have all been good. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Guest guest
H, Welcome to the group. I didn't realize it at the time, but when my kidney function went south my hair was very thin and flat, my fingernails barely grew, my skin was very dry and I lost a good bit of weight. I think the body just gets tired when It has to deal with the extra things not getting filtered from the body. I have since had a transplant and my hair is thick again, nails grow, skin is fine. On a side note I was also married last June. > Hi, > > I'm new to the site. I have never posted before. I was diagnosed > with IGA in July 03. Guest guest
I'm on dialysis too, but my hair loss started long before that There are reports of hair loss on dialysis though, but, there can be many causes. One of them is protein malnutrition. As you know, it's very easy to not eat enough protein when on dialysis, and that can lead to hair loss (hair is primarily made of protein, and since we all lose hair everyday, if you are protein malnourished as is common on dialysis, it might not be able to grow back fast enough to replace the lost hair). There can be other things, like zinc deficiency, or sometimes even drug reactions (as Walt already suggested), allergic reaction to the dialyzer, etc. I'm afraid it can take a long time of experimenting by elimination to figure it out, if there's nothing obviously wrong in the blood work. I know one man who had hair loss, and after he got a transplant, his hair came back. I think the first thing would be to talk to your dietician to see if you might possibly not be eating enough protein. In my experience so far with dialysis, the dietician is a lot more clued in to this than the nephrologists are. Do you have any other strange, allergic-type reaction, like skin rashes or anything? If so, then, the likely culprit might be an allergy to a drug (including the heparin during dialysis), or to the dialyzer itself (they do have a hypo-allergenic version for people who have problems with the regular ones). Even stress can cause hair loss. But the greatest difficulty you may have in finding out why you are losing hair is that kidney failure itself can be the cause, and if so, maybe it will come back once you've been on dialysis a while. Not much the nephrologists can do about it, I'm afraid. Pierre IGA Hair Loss...(new to the site)? > Hi, > > I'm new to the site. I have never posted before. I was diagnosed > with IGA in July 03. Guest guest
, Marriage generally causes men to actually pull their hair out - which is why so many men are bald. Of course, it takes more than just a few months of marriage until it's noticeable But I just posted about another man I know who got a transplant after dialysis and his hair started growing nicely again. So, you're more confirmation of this. I sure wouldn't mind growing some! Guest guest
Pierre, Thanks for dropping a laugh into my day. Yeah hair's still there for now, but it's only been 7 months. May more hair grace you in the near future. > , > > Marriage generally causes men to actually pull their hair out - which is why > so many men are bald. Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the site. I have been " shedding " horribly since starting all the medications in Sept. Prednisone seemed to make it much worse. At times I'm losing hair in clumps, then it tapers off a bit, then starts back up when they change my dosages again so I find mine tends to be medication related. I've been noticing lots of new shorter hairs growing in though which stick out all over like sore thumbs in my waist length hair. Like Pierre said it can be caused by numerous other things though, including the kidneys shutting down. And like Pierre said so wonderfully check with your dietician they are a great resource and can help on many levels. Mine has helped me with numbness I tend to get in my mouth and fingers, the docs couldn't explain it but a few hours of her going over my diet and we found my phosphorus levels were too low. I changed my diet a bit and viola no more numbness! It's o.k. to be worried about the hair loss, heck I posted here about a hairstyle that would look good with the " moon face " caused by prednisone. When you look good it has a tendency to make you feel better, nothing vain about that. Hang in there and welcome again, Amy IGA Hair Loss...(new to the site)? > Hi, > > I'm new to the site. Guest guest
What used to kill me was my mother in law (who never took lessons from 's MIL). My husband's hair was long gone (maybe his first wife?) when we got together. His mother's transition from " cut your hair " to signing him up for " Hair Club for Men " was utterly seamless. Oy!
