Like Rita last week, all I can say is that what you were on is one heck of a

powerful combination. Probably too powerful for you. If you were sick, you

probably weren't very hungry, or thirsty, and, along with fluid losses like

diarrhea or vomiting or due to fever, blood pressure might drop a bit in

cases like that.

Sometimes doctors will overprescribe BP medications based on office visit

BP, when the real BP at home isn't elevated at all. There's no benefit to

having BP lower than the recommended levels, and there could actually be

some increased risk of adverse events - if you're dizzy when standing up

suddenly, BP is definitely too low.

Low Blood Pressure

pressure. yesterday morning it was 91/55. i was blacking out and seeing

stars everytime i stood up. in addition i am just really weak. i had a

terrible stomach bug friday night, but my neph isn't sure that's what

brought it on.

altace 10 mg, and chlorthalidone 25 mg. hopefully he will figure it out

when i see him on thursday. has anyone had this problem?

What they call the " renin-angiotensin system " is a major regulator of blood

pressure in the body. The kidneys control this system by secreting an

hormone called " renin " . ACE inhibitors like accupril block a large portion

of this system, Angiotensin II receptor blockers like Atacand (or Cozaar,

Diovan, etc.) also block this same system. When you take both together, it's

blocked even more totally. Unless BP is fairly high to begin with,

excessively low blood pressure is often the result, since one of the body's

main mechanisms for adjusting your BP up and down according to need is out

of commission. When that doesn't work, a common result is that the body

sends the sympathetic nervous system into high gear, to try and raise BP

that way. There are other BP meds that block that system too.

Re: Low Blood Pressure

> - I recently went through the same thing with my BP. Mine went as

low as 83/55. My neph took me off of accupril and atacand until my BP went

back to at least 100, which it did the following day. So now I'm back on my

BP's and guess what - the same thing is happening....BP is way too low

again. I think it's most likely an adjustment in medication that is needed.

I see my neph next week and hopefully we can straighten it out. I'll tell

you though....it's a really scary feeling to feel like you are going to pass

out everytime you get up. It's been difficult going to work. Hopefully

you'll get it resolved. Rita

Hi ,

I had mine drop when I was sick too. When you BP gets too low, it can cause you

to be lightheaded.

I hope you get some answers and your meds adjusted so you can feel better.

1) Losing weight is a common way of improving blood pressure. Along with a

low sodium diet, it's the single most effective non-medicinal method of

lowering high blood pressure.

2) Chlorthalidone is a diuretic, as you know. Diuretics work very

synergistically with both ACE inhibitors and Angiotensin II receptor

blockers, moreso than with other drugs.

So in your case, it's probably a combination of these things. Diuretics

don't work immediately. It takes a while to realize the full effects of

them.

Re: Low Blood Pressure

> i completely flaked and forgot that rita was having this problem too.

sorry, rita. anyway, pierre i see what you're saying, but i have been on

the combination of altace and cozaar for over six months now. last november

my neph added the chlorthalidone. maybe that is what is causing problems.

it just seems like two months on this combo is too long for something like

this to happen.

>

> the only other thing it thought of, and i don't know whether this has any

effect on it or not, is that i have probably lost 40 pounds since last

spring. i have always been a " big-boned " girl, but i after losing all this

weight - unintentionally - i am stick-like (for me anyway). could weight

play a part in it??
