Guest guest
We've probably touched on the subject of almonds before, but I wanted a little refresher from anyone on the board on this. I hear that almonds are good for controlling blood sugar in diabetics, but how do they accomplish this? I ask this because I decided the other night to try almonds as a snack instead of, say, a piece of cheese or a piece of lunch meat. But interestingly, my sugar dropped to 53! Fortunately, I had the good sense even then to check my sugar to confirm my feelings and I was almost right on in my guess of about 55-60. I'm going to try almonds again over the next couple of days to see if this repeats itself or to rule out a fluke. Hopefully there's not something else going on though. On another note though, I did have a weird fluke happen in mid afternoon today with no apparent reason for it, where I started feeling really queazy. It was all I could do to even think of checking my sugar, and when I did it read 35. I checked it a second time on a different finger, and it was 37. While the weather and humidity have been changing a little, I don't see anything drastic for that to happen, it just did out of the blue. I remedied the problem with a glucose tablet and within 10 minutes, I was fine. Obviously, I'm going to mention this to my doctor next time I see him as this is abnormal, especially for me, since for the most part, my sugars are extremely well controlled. Am I right in assuming that we type 2's can have occasional weird flukes like this for no reason, or does this portend to other issues I might have to be dealing with? Luckily in this case I was home, but even if I had been out somewhere, I do always take a few glucose tablets with me for any sudden drops like that, and always carry a couple of metformin and glyburide pills. You can never be too careful. Bill Powers
