Guest guest
I have stated that many times , PT is not an ordered service but a professional consultation. In my area it has taken 20 plus years to get that across to the professional community. This takes gaining respect, which means that the PT's MUST be up on evidenced based practice, and be willing to communicate respectfully Ron Barbato PT Corporate Director, Rehabilitation Services Program Director, Cancer Support Services Kentucky Board of Physical Therapy ________________________________ From: PTManager on behalf of katesel strimbeck Sent: Sat 2/5/2011 7:45 AM To: PTManager Subject: Are PTs Ordered? Really great discussion on PT vs Nursing. To take this in a bit of a different direction, which one of the posters made a comment on: Are we ordered? I have been trying to change that culture for a while at my hospital. Right now on some order sheets we are listed under ACTIVITY. So are we an ACTIVITY? I see us as a consultant service. I understand the " old fashioned " hospital culture, I understand the need to educate physicians, administrators. But despite YEARS of trying to meet, educate, talk, it feels so futile to me and I must admit a bit of a burn out producer at times for me. My staff feels that sometimes I don't stand up for them, but if people say " we just need PT done now " , and order it and wont' give time or respect to listen to why it isn't even appropriate, it gets a bit tiring. We are used quite a bit now to " mobilize pts " , because nursing doesn't have time to get pts out of bed. Now that said, I love acute care, I work in a place I like, these aren't " bad " people, but busy people. I am still chipping away, but respect comes VERY slowly. The big picture is PT practice has come a long way, I need to take a deep breath and keep chipping away. Kind a like all the snow I have been shoveling lately, eventually I have a clearer path.
