Guest guest
No disrespect meant but I think people with all these treatments do appear to be crazy to the outside world. When I was telling people I am giving my kids vitamins, they first go " oh yeah we do flintstones too " LOL and I go into what we give, not that it is that much at all, and people look as if I've grown two heads. One was a nurse and she was like " do your kids even NEED b12? " and I had to go into my genetic background (MTHFR mutation) and try to explain THAT, and say I didn't need blood work to know that my kids need b12 because of that fact... I am sure I looked like a nut. I am hoping that these friends (on the show) who appear weird at first will pull the wife into treatment options and setup some discord/discussion between the parents of Ben. It seems like the show is moving that way, since the dad is just all about " stopping this behavior " and the woman is more understanding the scope. But who knows, maybe it will be the dad that brings up biomedical stuff. I am betting that they have consultants so they don't mess this up! I liked all of the realism of denial etc... But I didn't like how the family with the guitar- playing cape-wearing kid was made out to look a little crazy. It seemed the writers just took buzz words of gfcf and ot pt but had no idea how important these treatments are to our kids. I just wish they would have shown a little more intelligence instead of the scattered mom and dad that couldn't seem to get dinner on the table yet they had time to sit arm and arm on the couch without trying to involve the kid in any sort of activity except running around. I want to give the show a chance, but it seems they will push 'not treatable' ' no recovery' without bringing up any other treatments that can help as well. It's just a tv show but I wish it realized the amount of people affected and the power of the platform they have. Wishful thinking.... Guest guest
Thanks for the laugh ! I think there are a lot of us carrying on conversations with oursleves Subject: Re: Parenthood on NBCTo: mb12 valtrex Date: Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 4:24 AM Yep, I appear crazy to my friends until they get a diagnosis of either ASD or ADHD. It happens so often it's scary. When I invite them over for dinner I don't let my son wear his cape (like in the show). LOL. I know they have a consultant, they must. I worked as a fashion designer consultant with the writers and prop master for 90210 for years when Donna (Tori Spelling) was in a fashion biz. They used my sketches in the show but the directions I would tell them for reality in fashion they didn't use. At least it never looked like the real fashion industry, just a fantasy of the biz. They would take my info and make it pretty, LOL. It was a great job. My one claim to fame. I hope they can do a great job with the show. Well, I have to go and wash my son's super hero cape, make sure his bucket he wears as his 'helmet' is clean, put EMLA cream on his butt, ferment his coconut water into kefir from hand grown grains, hide charcoal in his pear sauce, call a couple manufacturers for GFCF information, meet with his DAN, soak the blue off his Valtrex, have a conversation with myself while pretending he is answering me etc..... You get the picture. Crazy Train is my anthem. Guest guest
Ahhh, that is good and makes sense. I mean good in the production value, obviously not good in the traditional sense :-\ One of the producers has a son with aspergers... Guest guest
I was glad to see something I am going thru right now seeing how we just had our dx confirmed in January. So the deer-in-the-headlights look is exactly what I am feeling. Not boring at all to me. No, I don't expect " entertainment " to change the world. But you know there ARE people in the world that think autism is a made-up thing, and that " all these kids need is a spanking. " I am glad if a tv program can dispel that myth even just a little. Don't mean to sound so defensive, I did not make the show. But I am interested to see where it goes. Definitely not bored. , Totallly agree, yawn is right! LOL. Guest guest
leaving.((((as in, some children, not all, who are on the Spectrum, have a tendency to "elope" from certain situations--- running out of a pre school class, would be one example)))Sent from my iPhone .... What do you mean by eloping? Thanks,
Guest guest
It's very similar to what people with Alzheimer's or dementia get.You black out, start wandering, and come around hours later, with no idea where you are,or how you got there.During these episodes has been the only times I have ever been completely nonverbal. As a child, they happened at least 3-4 times a week.Fish oil made them a lot less frequent,MB12, folinic acid and fish oil caused them to completely go away. Google wandering and autism. To: mb12 valtrex Sent: Thu, March 18, 2010 8:12:15 AMSubject: Re: Parenthood on NBC At different random times, my son does a little routine where he runs back and forth or around house and intermittently does a skipping motion bowing at the same time. It is the same series of movements every time . He doesn't do it all of the time. It comes and goes and we can't figure out what triggers it. He definitely has to do it when it comes on. Can't stop himself. I thought that it might be "eloping" and that could give me insight as to how he is feeling when this occurs, but eloping sounds like a different "animal". Sometimes it is more prominent than others and sometimes we may not see it happening for a long period of time and then it will return. Any thoughts? Guest guest
I don't really see that. At least not yet, its still early. The first episode when Aspergers was mentioned, they discussed autism and how he has a form of autism, called aspergers. I'm hopeful (although not expecting) that they will do right with the storyline and at least bring about positive awareness.
