Brad--As the proud owner of a Biodex Balance System, I recommend that you put

the money into Christmas bonuses for your staff to aide in retention, and/or

continuing ed $.  My unit sits in the corner, used perhaps an hour or so a week,

and I have seen far more expensive equipment sitting in the corner at other

clinics...I personally feel that unless you are using it specifically as a

marketing tool, which in your case seems unnecessary (based on your facility)

that these units are becoming the balance equivalent of the Cybex/Kincom that

you " had to have " if you were going to rehab an ACL repair.   Buy some really

good, really cheap balance equipment like BOSU balls, bonus your staff, educate

them. You'll get just as good results for your patients.  Jeff Woodruff, PT,

I'm looking for advice regarding commercial balance testing equipment. The

population we're interested in testing are the community dwelling older adults

at risk for falls. The equipment would be used for pre and post balance testing

and potentially for balance retraining.

Would like to know what equipment you'd recommend and why.

Thank you,

Brad,

We tested the Biodex Balance System for several weeks. All of us came to the

conclusion that it is an overpriced gadget. We currently use a couple of

different foam products, a Bosu and a 70's mini-tramp. I agree with Jeff, save

your money.

That's funny that you guys bring up the topic of Balance Units. I just had the

Biodex rep in my office selling me on the Biodex Balance SD unit. I was actually

considering it, even though I've resisted for many years. I guess from a

practical perspective it won't be used that much, but as a marketing tool

especially for the Medicare fall prevention population it may be good. After

reading your texts I'm now second guessing myself.

In the past 3 weeks we have started using the Wii with the Wii fit board. Can't

report on any results, however, the patients enjoy it. Also addresses goals of

balance, coordination, weight shift, promote WB at an involved extremity. Can be

objective and quantifiable for documentation. ie number of times patient hit

soccer ball per game as well as other numeric values and times to complete task.

Inexpensive, $350 total for TV, Wii console and Wii fit.

I am fall proof certified, a program designed to reduce falls in the community

dwelling elderly individual. We use a balance test pre and post called the FAB

test. it gives a numerical value for a final score giving you the quantative

value you need for documentation and to show progression.

My Clinic (as well as our 2 other clinics) have had GREAT results with our

BIODEX SD. Have utilized it for 2 years now and been very happy with what

we do. We use as an ADJUNCT to all our balance patients, LE post op

patients (both young athletes and total joint patients). An ADJUNCT to our

other clinical utilizations, i.e. BOSU, Speed Pulley's, etc...an ADJUCT

We have benefited from a successful marketing return to our physicians as

well as to the PUBLIC. The FREE Fall Screen that we market gets a lot of

patients through the door, and a few of our referral sources are particular

to the Fall Index Score and Protocol Result s we communicate to them. I

would contend that we have more than paid for it in our 2 years of use.

NOW, that being said..I would seek out a used one FIRST, cut the cost to

50%-60%.........we did this and get the updated software support that is

required and service. I would recommend a vendor we use. VONCO

Medical...www.voncomed.com...Ask for Stan.

Would be happy to answer any more questions off line if needed.

Merry Christmas and Best of Luck to EVERYONE next year in these challenging

times of LESS $$$$$.

I am fall proof certified, a program designed to reduce falls in the community

dwelling elderly individual. We use a balance test pre and post called the FAB

test. it gives a numerical value for a final score giving you the quantative

value you need for documentation and to show progression.

I spoke with a well known neurologist a few years back who used a high-priced,

high-tech piece of balance testing equipment with a color monitor to

differentiate fallers from non-fallers. Categorization was based on whether the

patient fell stepping up onto the device -- about an 8 inch step. Patients who

fell were fallers, patients who succeeded were non-fallers. The rest of the

data collected was considered meaningless.

We have a similar piece of balance equipment here at the Rehabilitation

Institute, albeit made out of plywood.
