Guest guest
Hello All, We have been scd for 12 1/2 weeks and we have seen some remarkable improvements with our son.His sensory problems have almost gone away,he potty trained(we still have some accidents),he started spontaniously pointing at things without a prompt,he is using 3-word phrases, and he wants to communicate with us a whole lot more.On the down side,we are still dealing with visual stims and some finger play that while on gfcf, all went away. This makes me crazy!!How can we see so much improvement, but still see behaviors? He is still basically on the intro diet, because he reacts to almost everything. He's not having trophies most of the time.If he has pecan flour, then he has trophies. The problem is,he doesn't do well with pecan flour. Then on another note,I wander what he does do well with.I'm just a little discouraged by these behaviors that I can't seem to get rid of now.I have kept a food log and can't really say it helps.I know that when I introduce anything,he's not going to be able to tolerate it.All he eats is homemade sausage,a little pearsauce, green beans, chicken, mac.nut butter,a little honey, diluted pineapple juice. That's it.I have cut his supplements down and it hasn't shown effective either.I just want these behaviors gone.Maybe I focus on them too much, but I want them to leave. They were gone before scd,I want them to leave again. Is there anyone else that is seeing great results, but still dealing with behaviors?Any suggestions are appreciated.Thanks. Guest guest
I know his diet is extremely limited but is he salicylate sensitive? Honey could be a problem. We had problems as well with diluted pineapple causing nail picking. I give pomegranate to drink and also boiled down fruit water. Just a thought. Guest guest
Hi DeAnn, And now for the bad news ... Throughout this diet there have been times when either developed or reverted to some visual stims (looking at the T.V. out of the tops of her eyes, or the sides, specifically) which drove me crazy. In between times, they are gone. The last time I saw this kind of " visual stim " was at 10 MONTHS in. I can't figure out what causes it. Truly. I wish I could. However, I know that she is getting better and better and better with the help of SCD, so I try to focus on the good stuff. I hope you can too. Sue (from Pickering) Mom to , 4.5, formerly? Guest guest
Hi again, I really don't see any issues with avocado, honey or tomato (her favorite) but am concerned more about build up of these in small amounts. I quit honey, pineapple, and give her tomato/meat sauce occasionally since she loves it so much. Guest guest
Hi Sue, Do you think the visual stim may be linked to changes in arabinose as Lynn (Boosis) wrote about recently. Since still battles constipation, yeast could be contributing to it. Just a thought. That it goes away is a really good sign. Lots of gut healing going on. Here is the link if you are interested: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/message/11297 Sheila > And now for the bad news ... > > Throughout this diet there have been times when either > developed or reverted to some visual stims (looking at the T.V. out > of the tops of her eyes, or the sides, specifically) which drove me > crazy. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, You're not the first to suggest 's constipation may be the result of yeast. The problem is the testing is quite expensive, and then I have to ask myself, what am I going to do about it? I don't have a doctor who believes in this sort of intervention, so I can't get a prescription. I'm not willing to pull all the fruit and honey from her diet, either. As well, I haven't seen any of the " yeasty " behaviour described by others. No inappropriate laughing or giddiness. No rashes around the anus, or spots on the bum. No mucousy poop. I suppose I could throw some grapefruit seed extract into her juice for a few days and see what happens ... but I hate treating her like a lab rat! Basically, the constipation is under control as long as: a) she eats a very ripe pear in the morning she drinks sufficient watered juice c) she gets her 150 mg of magnesium. She eats 1 1/2 to 2 cups of yogurt per day, so I'd *think* that was getting the lactobacillus into her system. If all of those conditions are filled, we have trophy stools. Otherwise we have bally stools, or actual balls. It's just so hard without a DAN practitioner. Sue (From Pickering) Mom to , 4.5, formerly? Guest guest
Sue, Doctor's Data Inc has a basic stool test for yeast that costs $42 (a participating doctor needs to order it...)!!! With regard to visual stims... My son has been covering one eye when we are practising reading. His Occupational Therapist notices he has more nystagmus. I am thinking that maybe I am feeding him too many carrots (has anyone read about 's diet? Some kids react poorly I believe to luthein...) Guest guest
Hi Coral, We did a stool sample analysis last year and NO yeast showed up ... but I've been told since then that yeast often doesn't show on stool tests. You're right, $42 is cheap, but there's that " participating doctor " problem again ... I've heard of 's diet, but so far SCD is working fine for us. Guest guest
Hi Sue, I wasn't really saying that she necessarily has a " yeast problem " but that at times when she goes through the episodes that the yeast is going through a stage. Things are getting better all the time - right? and she improves after the mini regressions. We never truly get rid of it all but are looking for a balance with the good microflora being in control keeping the harmful microflora numbers down. So I was just suggesting that the yeast flares up a little and she has greater improvement each time. Although things are going slow it is steady improvement forward. I find it hard sometimes to explain this stuff over the internet. And if I haven't said it lately I think you are doing a fantastic job!
