Hello! As a reminder...I had a partial thyroidectomy done June, 2004

for a hot nodule which was causing hyperthyroidism. I went in

February, 05 to have labs done due to feeling bad. My labs were: TSH

5.71 (.27-4.2) and T4 .99 (.93-1.71). My endo said my symptoms were

due to the time of year it is and that everyone gets this way. But,

she (reluctantly) put me on 25 mcg Levothyroxine and said I should get

labs checked again in 3 months. This is the first time I have ever

been on thyroid meds. I was just wondering how long it takes to start

noticing an improvement. AND...at this dose, will I even NOTICE an

improvement. I am still very fatigued, especially right after lunch

(early afternoon). I feel like all I want to do is lay down and not

move.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, Any thoughts or advice you ask? Get a new doctor! That

statement about it being the time of year.....hooey! And at 25

mg....that is like giving a taste....not even a taste of something

that could help. AND on top of that, it doesn't look as if she even

knows what tests she needs to run???????? Find a new doc!

Was that too blunt? :)

Hugs,

Kat

Chances are with a TSH that high and a dose that low.. you won't be feeling a difference.... As a rule of thumb, it takes 4 to 6 weeks for your body to achieve the full effect of a dosage change of T4, whether as a synthetic, like Synthroid, or as part of a Natural, like Armour.

.... but again, with a dose that low and a TSH that high.... it probably won't be enough to help.... you show a T4 (most likely total T4) that is also way to low....

It would be a real good idea to let your doc know that you want to have your Free T4 and Free T3 tested so that you are aware of the thyroid hormone that your body has available... your remaining thyroid function is showing that it's not enough... and when you add supplemental to that it often causes existing thyroid function to drop.. so it's important to check every 6 weeks or so after a dosage change to see where your levels are and how your body is adjusting to those dosage changes.

IMHO

If your doc isn't willing to work with you on those points... it's time to find a new doc... take if from someone that didn't keep on top of things when docs blew me off... I'm paying the price for it....

Thanks for the mind jiggle... to refresh our memories as to your story.... *smile*

From what I have found here and else where, you dock has been out in

the cold too long, and his brain has forzen.

TSH should be no higher than 3 (by 'new' standards .3 to 3)

..99 T4 should be in the upper 1/3 of range (above 1.45)

No T3 stated. This should also be in upper 1/3 of range.

It is time to put the doc back out in the cold.

Thank you all so much for your support and advice. You don't know how

much it means to me. I think that it has been rough on my body to go

from hyper to hypo in less than a year. I don't know, but I assume

this has something to do with how bad I feel. I have really been

debating whether or not to switch doc's and you all have pretty much

convinced me to do so. This is the 2nd Endo I have dealt with and

haven't been impressed with either one. I am really considering going

to my family dr. I don't know if this is the right decision or not,

but I am not having much luck in the Endo area. All I care about is

feeling...hmmm...NORMAL?!? I don't want to accept how I feel. I want

to have a fun summer with my 2 year old.

I thought that 25 mg was pretty low and felt that it was almost a slap

in the face when my Endo told me that was what she was prescribing.

And for her to say it is just the time of year why I feel depressed

and fatigued really hit me hard.

Thank you again!!! You are all great and I am glad to have people

that understand what I am going through. No one else in the world

seems to!!!
