Chris: Have you come across a particular brand you prefer? Taking into

consideration that there may be inferior quality in some, potentially causing

injury?

I have always had an ear wax build-up problem and find this natural removal

system interesting. I also found the info at Dr. Weil's site interesting

esp. re: infections caused by wax packed against the " tympanic membrane " .

Since I seem to have a chronic ear infection, I wonder if this is a cause of

my problem.

Babs..regarding ear candles....used them last yr for the first time on the

recommendation of my daughter who was advised by her sister in law. I

purchased them in my local health food store. It's important to read

directions carefully, and since my daughter and her husband had already

experimented with them, it was easy for us. It was kind of humorous...turned

into an ear waxing party. (hope no neighbors were watching) For those in our

group who experienced ear wax build-up, they noticed a difference (clearer

sounds and a cleaner feeling in the ear, no itching, etc). For those of us

(me included in this group) who has no problem, no difference was noted,

except that I equated it to a dental cleaning...just a somewhat healthier

feeling when finished. It's also very relaxing PROVIDED you trust the person

who's administering the flame. I believe it's recommended not more than twice

yearly.

Hi Mark,

I like it - always did think Dave Barry was funny :)

Geoff - you get hopi or ear candles from health food shops. They're really

easy to use (not like Dave Barry describes :) and it takes only about ten

minutes. A member of your family can just light the candle and watch to

make sure the flame doesn't touch anything.

The candle is about eight inches long and is marked differently at each

end. The end you put in your ear has a firm tube inside and a red line

about 3 inches from the end. You lie down, put a cloth over your shoulder

and put the correct end into your ear so it fits closely. Someone else

lights the other end and it starts to burn very slowly. The fabric of the

candle tends to just curl up rather than fall off. When the flame reaches

the red line, the other person holds it next to your ear and gently

removes it, putting out the flame in a cup of water. If you have a lot of

wax in the ear, the little firm tube at the ear end is filled with thick

wax afterwards.

Occasionally people have had trouble with inferior and cheaply made

candles as some of the hot material has ended up on their eardrum. If

you're not sure that the candles are good quality then you can sit up and

let the candle burn sideways. You also get the nutcases who claim that the

candles do all sorts of other things - they just remove wax.

I'm told that ear syringeing can often cause bleeding in the ear. These

candles are such a simple and effective way of removing the wax with no

problems - and it feels very relaxing :)

I'm sort of curious after reading about 5 or 6 different links on ear

candles, all indicating that study after study could not produce findings of

" negative pressure " and that in reality all the stuff coming out of one's

ears was nothing more than soot and crud from the candle. What do you think

of that information? Incidentally, that info isn't just coming from

allopathic docs, but naturopaths as well.

Doesn't really matter to me, as I don't have a need for that, but out of

curiosity I wonder what is really going on here? Do people see this stuff

on the end of the candle and then the power of the mind takes over and they

think they feel better?

Babs,

I found Dr Weil's site interesting too. Thanks Mark for sending it and the

Dave Barry piece. Interesting that Dr. Weil said don't use ear drops when

you have a perforated ear drum and that's exactly what my gp said to use.

I used them yesterday (4 times a day) and my ear was so sore and clogged up

last night it was driving me crazy. I had to dig the crud out to get

relief from the pain. I don't feel I should be putting anything liquid in

my ear. He told me not to let water get down the ear.

That would be really easy to find out, Babs, just ask the doctor to check

your ears for wax against the eardrum the next time you go in. They should

be able to see it with the scope. Another sign would be if really loud

noises ever make a buzzing sound in your ear--sounds like a stereo speaker

distorting (hardened wax rattling against the eardrum). You could also use

some of those commercial ear drops (carbamide peroxide--for wax removal and

swimmer's ear) for a few days and see if it helps. About $5/bottle at the

drugstore. If you prefer herbal drops, you could use mullein flower oil,

from the health food store, or oil of oregano--a few drops diluted in 1 oz

olive oil.

About Mark's comments--I wonder if there might not be some benefit from

the heat in the ear, to ease pain and soften the wax, even if there is not

any negative pressure. I remember my mother using some kind of oil drops in

our ears when we had earaches as a little child. She warmed them by putting

the bottle in a pan of hot water for a few minutes--the warmth was very

soothing. If you try this, be sure to test a drop on the inside of your arm

before putting it in your ears to make sure it is not too hotit should be no

more than lukewarm.

I also have a question about excessive ear wax--my son has a problem with

this--I read once that excessive ear wax production is sometimes a sign of

zinc deficiency. His doctor says it is just normal for some people to have

more. Any comments? Liz G

Hi Mark,

I read all the info also and my dad particularly resisted the things

because he felt that any residue would be from the candle. But the

interesting thing was that we had a 'control', We tried them on someone

who didn't have an ear wax problem and there was absolutely nothing in the

candle after it was removed - just the empty tube. Now any crud and soot

should have been present for that person also. My dad and some others with

wax problems used the same brand of candle in the same way and the amount

of yellow/orange/obviously wax stuff was unbelievable - large globs of it!

And then dad found he could hear on the telephone again.

I don't know how the wax is brought out either. It might simply warm the

wax (ears feel nice and warm during the burning) and there's enough of a

partial vacuum to draw it into the base of the candle. American Indians

used this method for centuries so I hear. The candles also help with that

sort of wet feeling that many people get in their ears, sometimes from

showering or swimming.

Chris.

Hi Babs,

I'm not sure that the brands we get in Australia are the same as the ones

you get in the US and I can't even remember what the ones we used were

called. I've found that good health food shop proprietors (i.e. the ones

who know their stuff) will only bring in reliable brands and are likely

to be able to tell you why some are better. A search on the web might

offer some help also. The ones we had for my dad were made of firm linen.

You can order them, however since the aveage person takes several candles

you can make them yourself, first buy them, and use them as a sample, I use

them to remove ear wax, only after the MD has checked hearing and water

behind the ear drum. Ears and equalizing them are a big issue in

Hyperbarics.

Wedding cake candle wax works well, Gauss or cotton sheets, and I use a long

ring sizer, shaped like a funnel, small funnel but long,,, Can you picture

it? some people use a fat pencil, I learned this from an old woman who has

done it for her children for 30 years, there is a book out, and I do a lymph

and face rub that moves alot " junk " UP and out. I irrigate the ear

afterwards, then use swimmers ear drops afterwards so you do not leave water

from the irrigation.

Dear Erma,

Remember the candles do not have to look pretty, they just have to work, Use

a double boiler for the wax and watch out, it gets HOT

How unexpensive are they? considering that you have to use several on each

ear, depending of course on the problems, For they are alot of trouble to

make, that is for sure

Hi to all,

I am an Ear Candler, The practice of ear candling has been in practice for

Thousands of years!!! I just came back from a trip doing just that Ear

Candling. I don't know if I would believe if I would believe everything I

read with out doing for research. This is not medical practice, however my

clients do report having received benefits for having their ears Candled.

BB,

Renie

are you sure you want to waste your money on ear candles?

Liz, ear candles are made by dipping muslin in beeswax and wrapping them

around a pencil or other round object, preferably conical in shape. Care

should be taken in using them and further reading about the dangers is

recommended. If you do use them, use a paper plate to catch drips and don't

let them burn too close to the head.

Pat.

Re: ear candles

I thought I remembered someone on the list talking about using the ear

candles. I bought 4 at the health food store the other day. I haven't used

them yet. My husband has chronic sinus infections so when his get bad

again, I plan on trying them out.

Joyfully,

Jackie

I find it to be a safe thing to do and it really works for me and my

children. I have had children with ear aches and candled their ear and

gotten rid of the ear ache. I have done the same thing for myself. I

wouldn't recommend candling your own ear, but it can be done, I do my own.

It is a sight to see. I lay on the floor with a mirror so I can see the ear

candle. I have a bowl of water near by just in case. Again, I wouldn't

recommend this to anyone else!

I DO MY OWN ear candling also. It isn't as easy as having help. I candeled

my dads ears for the first time a few days ago - he is 86. The stuff we got

out was as big around as a pencil and about 2 " long, each ear. It is an

amazing thing.

I was having problems with my sinuses. My girlfriend candled my ears for me

and ever since I haven't had big problems with them. When my head filled up

with sinus my ears would pop and I always had a lot of junk in my ears. My

ears had been clear for 3 years and I went to have it done again and there

was nothing. It works once you get past the idea of having a foot long

candle stuck in your ear and set the thing on fire. :-)
