All,A few months ago, I bought the book, Autism, Beyond Despair by Tinus Smits, MD, c. 2010. It is about a specific type of homeopathy that he has developed called CEASE Therapy. I really recommend this book, I think it is cutting edge stuff and a very interesting read.Anyway, aside from the homeopathic therapy that he uses, he mentioned a supplement therapy he used for improving brain function in many of his patients. (Dr. Smits almost exclusively treated autistic kids; he died in April; he was a doc from Netherlands.)Here I will quote some parts of his book:p. 63: "Dr. Kalokerinos' work has led me to prescribe vitamin C as a preventive measure. Then when I witnessed that autism often improved by detoxifying the vaccines, I

thought vitamin C could not only be useful in preventing autism from vaccinations, but that it could possibly play an important part in curing it as well. When I first prescribed ascorbyl palmitate (the fat-soluable vitamin C) for a four-year-old autistic child, both his speech and comprehension improved dramatically. His mother was deeply impressed by the significant improvement. Since then, ascrbyl palmitate has played an essential part of my treatment protocol for autistic children."p. 65: "Vitamin C does not enter the brain easily since the brain barrier is permeable only to fat-soluble substances. In this way the brain is protected against toxic materials. By using the fat-soluble form of vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate), it is possible to transport a larger amount of vitamin C to the brain. To prevent the body from using too large an amount of this fat-soluble

vitamin C elsewhere, or from transforming it into water-soluble, I always make sure to prescribe the water-soluble vitamin C. I use it in the acorbate form. This is the non-acidic form bound to a mineral like calcium, potassium, magnesiun or zinc. The enables the administration of minerals in combination with the vitamin C. The non-acidic vitamin C is generally better tolerated. A very important, perhaps even the most important function of vitamin C in the brain is the reduction of oxidative stress. This is accomplished by clearing away free radicals and by methylating various substances. . . . "On p. 21 he describes this supplement therapy: "I gave both remedies once a week in a 30C potency (homeopathy), along with ascorbyl palmitate 500 capsules, two of them three times a day, and ascorbate complex 1000 tablets, one tablet three times a day. This complex also contains 82 mg of potassium, 60mg of magnesium, 3mg of zinc and 75mg of

bioflavonoids. . . . Three months later he was another child. After two weeks of treatment there was already a clear improvement. . . ."I intend to try this CEASE therapy soon, however, in the meantime, I started my kids (ages 20 and 17) on the vit. C therapy. From Vitacost, I purchased Source Naturals Ascorbyl Palmitate (500mg tablets), Source Naturals Wellness C-1000 (1000mg tablets; a complex), and NutriCology Magnesium Ascorbate (500mg capsules). Although I should dose them 3 times a day, we only dose twice a day. They get 2 of the first; 1 of the second; and 2 of the third--morning and night. The 17 yr old had some diahreaa at first, it is gone now.Interestingly, after only about 2 weeks, I believe we are seeing some cognitive changes in them, particularly in my son who has farther to go. He is starting to do some things on his own that he never used to do, doing some of his therapies by himself, independently

packaging up some materials to be mailed, being responsible about doing homework, etc. My daughter seems to be more responsible, too, in getting things done that she needs to do instead of spacing them out as is the norm.I am thinking of combining this Vit. C therapy with some other cognitive enhancers, like Neuro Biologix's Mitochondrial Restore. At any rate, it is a fairly inexpensive trial therapy.sally
