Guest guest
Do some research on xylitol... I think if you use 6 g a day, it can prevent cavities and I heard it can re-mineralize teeth?? I think 6 g is like 8 pieces of Spry xylitol gum a day. You can get rinse and toothpaste too. --- ToniTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Mon, September 27, 2010 12:33:53 PMSubject: dentist wants to put metal in my son's mouth...any other options? dentist says my son needs a metal cap and a filling. Guest guest
There is a great book about curing tooth decay and a website. curetoothdecay.com. I'd try this first. If they are baby teeth, they will eventually fall out anyway. I have not read this book, but heard it was good and plan to get it for my husband. good luck mary

Guest guest
only thing i know of is composite, is that what you are referring to? Which works for a small cavity, but apparently one is big and needs a whole silver cap over it... Guest guest
If a cap is the same as a crown - and i think it is - there are many options for the material. gold and porcelain are two options. under no circumstances have a silver filling put in - i didn't even know dentists used amalgam fillings anymore. get a white composite filling. i would google types of crowns or caps and see what you get. maggied. > > dentist says my son needs a metal cap and a filling. Guest guest
My son has a stainless steel cap. There is no amalgam within it. You might call around to different dentists.. I know one guy who said that he would have just filled the whole thing up with bonding material, but that he couldn't guarentee that it would remain intact for the duration of the tooth. It was not a permanent tooth. and should be coming out very soon... yippee... > > > > dentist says my son needs a metal cap and a filling. Guest guest
when i get my teeth done i just get novocaine. if you get enough novocaine you don't feel anything. i had a root canal done this way, too, and i never felt anything. maggied. > > What can they use instead of nitrous oxide, gas? > > >
Guest guest
i agree about calling around. you might google " mercury-free dentists " and see what you get. because a dentist who considers him/herself mercury-free may have a holistic approach. that's how i found my dentist in nyc. maggied. > > My son has a stainless steel cap. Guest guest
I was in the same predicament about a month ago. We finally decided to have the cap put on. We got the Msds sheet on it and it was 100% stainless steel. I wanted to make sure that there were no other metals in the cap and we went back and forth with the dentist about making sure of this and he showed us the manufacturer's sheet and we saw that it was 100% stainless steel. My husband works with these sheets from manufacturer's all the time and he said we are very reliable. So not really knowing what else to do and feeling OK about the cap we just put it in and got on with the rest of his recovery.
