Guest guest
Unions have done some great things in the past, however, if you will notice it has always been in dealing with employers. They have done very little with a state government. This problem will take more. It will take the unified voice of the EMS community, and the strong support of the people we serve. We have to try in some way to get the community involved with us, to support us. If we will all stand together we will be successful. If the public will cry in a loud enough voice they will be heard and the politicians will have to listen. Guest guest
Irlynda, We have NO TIME to form unions. OUR CRISIS IS NOW! We have an organization dedicated to representing us before the legislature and in the regulatory agencies, and that is what we need now. Unions are fine at the local level, but they cannot do what we need, which is to get the ear of our legislators and regulators urgently and secure an EMS Commission for our profession. JOIN EMSAT NOW. It is in existence, has the legal authority to represent us, and it is up and running. We have a paid legislative liaison (read Lobbyist) who knows the right people to get this done. We only lack NUMBERS. We need as many numbers as we can get as quickly as we can get them. We must make a show of force RIGHT NOW. Next month is too late. TODAY is the time. Join now. http://www.emsatoftx.org/join_emsat.htm Gene G.

Guest guest
I agree with Corey. Police and fire unions have been a long standing tradtion that have made these entities what they are today. If EMS wants to be treated and respected as the 3 part of emergency services we must unionize. One voice, loud and proud. rchrdson07 wrote:Do the recent actions that are being taken with TDH cause anyone to think about looking into the possibility of EMS unions? Guest guest
Gene, While I agree everyone should join the assoc. now, because of the lack of a union, the assoc. can be so much more. Unions have more power in legislature, county, city and in regulatory bodies than most associations. This is because they are the legal bargaining representatives of a group giving it more authority. A loose formed association is only recognized as a courtesy. Also there is more power within a labor council. Unions of like motivation can ban together for common cause. Example, city employees, state employees, Fireman unions, and police unions. A city council or county fathers have a much more difficult time putting any one group of employees on hold when there is a legal bargaining agent in the room for each and every other department. Unions come with a whole battery of lawyers, professional negotiators, and lobbies. A lobbies is a small voice, better than none, but a small voice. By the way I have already joined EMSAT. wegandy1938@... wrote: Irlynda, We have NO TIME to form unions. OUR CRISIS IS NOW! Guest guest
Molino, Oh, please! I am a voluteer and a paid medic. Volunteer needs are just as important as the paid medic and if they are in jepordy of loosing thier ablity to volunteer as a medic they will really need a voice. As for ECA to LP a medic is a medic. We all have the same goals, quality patient care to best of our abilities. As far as the current unions, have you ever heard of combining forces? If you are in the mood to get mad great! Use that to make a better EMS any way you can. lnmolino@... wrote: One question on the IDEA of a UNION. How would one UNIONIZE the state of Texas EMS provider Community from all the ECAs to all the LP's? Consider that Many of them are VOLUNTEERS hence they have NO NEED for a BARGAINING UNIT. further I can't see how you'd take all the currently UNIONIZED EMS Providers from around Texas and make them into ANOTHER UNION (IIRC you can't be in 2 unions for the same function?). How does a UNION make sense in this respect? An association sure that I see and Yes I am joining EMSAT tonight! Louis N. Guest guest
Molino, Ok I will stop defending volunteers to you I believe EMSAT is the answer short term but we need to plan for our future if we are going to have one in Texas. I think we are agreeing in a round about way. Irlynda , EMT-P Random acts of kindness can profoundly affect someone's life, maybe even your own. Guest guest
Irlynda, Here is a concern I have regarding unions instead of a group like EMSAT. There are many different types of EMS systems/services in the state. One of the larger groups is represented by a union that has stated it feels that their group is the only viable way to provide EMS...so for the systems and personnel who operate in other system types, it would be potentially a conflict of interest or at least a serious lack of judgement to join a union for EMS as a whole that has publicly stated it feels your system should be done away with in favor of it's style. At least a group like EMSAT is willing to represent everybody in EMS regardless of the type of system they work/volunteer in. Dudley
