Hi Peggy!

I didn't know what to make of her offer...well, I

decided to listen to Vicki and hit this disease with a

power punch and took 60 mg last night (two doses an

hour apart!) and 60 doses this morning before I left

for work.

I woke up a bunch of times running to the bathroom.

Slept pretty well. Only fell asleep once at work

today!

I read somewhere that two doses isn't bad because of

how prednisone leaves your system. But then I found

another that said it works better in the a.m. So, I

decided to go with taking it all in the a.m.!! Gimme

my calcium.

But gee, your body ages....cataracts, eh? Ouch...do

they run in my family...everybody has them.

Well, we'll see how it goes from day to day! My head

got real hot, not a hot flash, but just hot. Thought

I was going to get a monster headache, but it went

away.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed so hard...lifted my

right arm to scratch my head and had a huge burst of

burning pain in the muscle.

This is soooo interesting!

Hi Cari.

Try this link:

http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1950/kendall-bio.html

This man was one of the cowinners of the 1950 Nobel Prize in medicine

for his work in synthesizing the adrenal gland products (presumably

including prednisone).

Good luck.

Stay warm.

And don't sweat in front of the audience.

Cari... Good luck with your talk. To what group are you speaking? I think

it's great that you are doing that...the more people are informed about

these diseases, the more hope there is for us, right? Annette

Annette,

My talk was actually cancelled yesterday afternoon. I give talks about

Myositis diseases for the Muscular Dystophy Association. I know that they

don't heavily fund Myositis disease research but can't pass up an

opportunity to educate a few more people. Also, the MDA heavily funds

Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy research. That is a horrific, fatal

disease and through the MDA I have meet, and am now friends, with some

families whose boys have it. was initially diagnosed with Duchenne's

MD and his dx was changed 26 days later. That phone call was such an

incredible gift, I feel priviledged to do what I can to raise money for the

other boys who suffer with it.

I was to be speaking to the employees of a chain of banks here who sell

Shamrocks for MDA. My friend who works for MDA got a call yesterday that

they were only giving her 5 minutes to speak and not 15 so my part was

cancelled.

used to go with me but Kindergarten has seriously cut into his public

speaking engagements! LOL He really likes to do it. He is an MDA Junior

Goodwill Ambassador. It has never bothered me to get up in front of people.

I keep it very casual and speak from the heart.

Thanks Annette. It actually seems like so little. Just like to know that

YES! Prednisone can cause weight gain. (Which is why I refuse to take it

for my arthritis.) I believe that in addition to getting the " moon face, "

it also stimulates the appetite. I'm not sure about retaining water... You

could do a search out on WebMD or even Google... My gosh, PMS AND

Prednisone.... lock up the fridge! :D

Prednisone will cause you to become more hungry but it does not usually

start very quickly. As for the airway problem with your DD if it was

inhailed it should not have caused much weight gain as it is not metabolized

like a pill form. I have taken it short term and a friend of ours has taken

it for more than 10yrs. since she had a liver transplant and she has to be

very careful or her eating will get out of control since the meds over time

will increase hunger.

Thanks Moe. As for my daughter ... she was an infant (2 1/2 months when she

started) and we gave her liquid Prednisone for nearly 2 years ... yes,

she did get

totally blown up ... to the point where at one Doctors' visit, the

doctor started

with " well, time to let the air out " :-) P.S. DD is passed her problems and

doing great!!!!

I was put Prednisone for a few weeks for a skin condition and did not

notice any unusual weight gain or appetite with it.

Now, that wonderful time of month when you are completely woman, the

older I get the more weight I gain, if it ain't water retention it's

emotional, out of control eating. I am pretty sure there is not a

man alive who can comprehend that ;-) (couldn't resist the shot)

Hi Mitch.

About two years ago, my Dr. put me on Prednisone for ten days to clear up an ear

infection. It worked. It made me feel like super woman. But I will never, never

take it again because of the withdrawal that I had (Dr. took me off of it cold

turkey instead of gradually).

ANYWAY, to answer your question, I had a RAGING appetite when I was on

Predninsone. We would drive by a restaurant and I could literally *taste* the

food just by smelling it. I HAD to eat, day and night, all the time!! I'd wake

up with cookie crumbs on me in the morning, not remembering how they got there.

And, it seems I gained between five and ten pounds in the ten days I was on it.

The worst part is that the hunger you feel on prednisone feels like true,

physical hunger, not emotional or mental hunger. You can't ignore it. Just tell

your wife to hang in there and do the best she can. Damage control is much

easier once she's off of the drug.

Good luck,

Prednisone

Anyone know anything about the steroid Prednisone and

Anyone know anything about the steroid Prednisone and

weight gain? My wife is in the Prednisone for a couple of

days to combat a case of Poison Ivy and she put on 8

pounds just like that.... She's also pre-menstrual right

now and has been a little out-of-control with her eating,

so she's a little concerned ....

I know when my youngest daughter was ill with an

airway problem, they gave her prednisone and she ballooned

up big-time, but those were much higher doses....

Good luck,

Prednisone

I was going to look it up, but being the lazy Scot, I thought I'd ask - what is

prednisone used for? and anyone know the non-us name? :o)

Subject: RE: Merry Christmas

When the doctor wanted to put me on prednisone, I replied, " Well, I might as

well tie a piece of celery around my neck! " I do keep large bowls of great

salads in the refrig. But I know my face is rounding out too. I wish we could go

on something else besides pred. But I'm only on alternate days: four 10mg tabs

plus four 1 gr gel caps of fish oil daily.

I believe you said you were on 60mg pred daily. Am in Nebr now for a visit

with my mother, she had a mild heart attack. Met with her cardiologist;

mentioned I was visiting from near Cleveland; said he knew great heart docs in

Cleveland. Mentioned that I had HSP with IgAN; he really said that Mayo Clinic

was great for rheumatology and immunology and nephrology. Well, definitely don't

live near Rochester MN! Anyhow, I wonder how many of us are on the

same/different types of treatments. Seems like the centers dictate the " favor of

the year " !

I do hope your tests are O.K. on Jan 6; I know you'll let all of us know.

Prednisone is an oral steroid. It's the most common one, but prednisolone is

also pretty much the same. It's in the same family of drugs as

hydrocortisone, which is more commonly used in ointments. In the more common

kind of IgAN, it's used primarily to reduce heavy proteinuria to more

manageable levels, although some doctors experiment with it to see if it

will slow the disease down (usually on alternate day dosing). It's

frequently used in more rapidly-progressive IgAN.

Thanks Rita - excuse my laziness!

Re: prednisone

Prednisone is used to help severe inflammation in many different diseases,

i.e. asthma.
