" Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics ($25,450): Down the road,

their patients will be treated by well-compensated doctors if they survive;

it's these front-line medical experts who greatly enhance survival chances.

Look for their pay to increase as overweight Baby Boomers discover their

maintenance meds failing them in the damnedest of places. "

How long have we been hearing this? Call me cynical (, you are cynical)

but gee whiz folks, EMS and public safety are the LAST thing municipalities

spend money on. Honestly, considering all aspects, I really feel like my job

is worth $70,000 a year.....to START. I think that's a bargain, really,

considering what we provide, and what is expected of us. My wife makes that

as a nurse, and I am as well trained and have as much education as she does.

My service is a vital as hers is, but I get paid 30K a year less than she

does, and it sucks. What am I going to do? Be a nurse? I don't want to be a

nurse. I could do damned near anything I wanted to. I've made big piles of

money doing things I hated. I feel like I'm being spit on every 2 weeks that

society feels like my service is worth a thousand bucks. I read another

story recently based on a survey that had Paramedics among the most admired

professions. Isn't that a kick in the head? Most admired....most underpaid.

Know what the guy sweeping up at Reliant stadium makes? $12 an hour. They

are taking advantage of us because we love what we do, and would do it for

nothing. The pay robs us of our longevity, drags our morale down and scares

many a good person away from pre-hospital medicine in the first place.

Anybody with gumption goes to nursing, or PA, or insurance sales. So, what

do we do? We get up and go to our jobs, try our best and try not to think

about it too much.....just like I'll do tomorrow.
