Guest guest
Rev. : Steve didn't bring this topic to the list. It was initiated by Joby Berkley (thanks for sharing this case with us, BTW). Steve: While it may seem that on one hand discussing this " trooper " may be gossiping. On the other hand, dicussing this " case study " has actually brought about a number of positive comments regarding: verbal and non-verbal communications with impaired individuals; the importance of being in control of our own emotions while on duty; and the fact that at any time on any call we are representing not only ourselves but our agency and profession. These are not bad things to be discussed. While it is unfortunate that the only example we have on this case study is of what not to do, many times that can be used as an appropriate educational tool. Just as professional discourse on a topic. If someone wants to compare/contrast this video with another video that shows the same type of call going perfectly so be it. It's just that video showing things going right is usually taped over or discarded. Video showing things going south or the aftermath of things going south (such as the railroad tank car explosions that took out the fire department, etc.) are what gets saved. In those cases, you have to deal the card that was dealt. I did not take this tape as being a condemnation of law enforcement in general or the fine men and women of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. I looked at it and shared it with a law enforcement colleague as a case study of what not to do and what can happen when you let things go south as it related to my comments above and when this discussion first came out. Not being in her shoes and not knowing what went on off camera, I can't say if what she did was right or wrong at that moment in time. I can say that from that the tape showed there were things that were going on that effected the call and the outcome. Just my $.02. Barry Sharp Re: Re: Female Trooper Shoots Man On Traffic Stop (VIDEO ) So what if this went to a jury trial. The people on the jury are not going to be all law enforcement experts. we can discuss this with the video we know. " a picture is worth a thousand words " . Wasn't is you who brought this up? sean On Friday, Dec 19, 2003, at 16:27 US/Central, Steve composed: > Exactly. Guest guest
WOW, I never thought that this video would cause such a conversation among everyone. However, there have been some great points brought out. I will add that there was no where near the conversation about this on a peace officer list server. Makes me wonder if I should have even posted it in the first place??? : ) Joby Berkley Re: Re: Female Trooper Shoots Man On Traffic Stop (V IDEO ) > > On Friday, Dec 19, 2003, at 17:05 US/Central, Barry Sharp composed: > > > Rev. : Steve didn't bring this topic to the list. Guest guest
Well Joby, the next time we have an " incicent " where an EMS person is involved and potentially in the wrong, bring that up on the LE Listserver. They like to gossip as much as we do, as long as it's about Fire or EMS (like we like to gossip about LE). Oh, and lest anyone misconstrue my position, I'm just commenting for the sake of commenting. No emotional involvement whatsoever. After 10 years in LE and now 20 in EMS, I'm fairly hard to offend! And I don't mean to offend anyone else. I just love a good discussion! Funny thing, when I left LE and went to the EMS side of the city, many of my former colleagues accused me of going over to " The DARK Side of the Force " (ala StarWars)!!! That rivalry has been going on a LONG time! =Steve= joby wrote: >WOW, I never thought that this video would cause such a conversation among >everyone.
